The normally nonchalant Barack Obama looked nonplussed, as Nancy Pelosi glowered behind.
Surrounded by middle-aged white guys — a sepia snapshot of the days when such pols ran Washington like their own men’s club — Joe Wilson yelled “You lie!” at a president who didn’t.
But, fair or not, what I heard was an unspoken word in the air: You lie, boy!
The outburst was unexpected from a milquetoast Republican backbencher from South Carolina who had attracted little media attention. Now it has made him an overnight right-wing hero, inspiring “You lie!” bumper stickers and T-shirts.
The congressman, we learned, belonged to the Sons of Confederate Veterans, led a 2000 campaign to keep the Confederate flag waving above South Carolina’s state Capitol and denounced as a “smear” the true claim of a black woman that she was the daughter of Strom Thurmond, the ’48 segregationist candidate for president. Wilson clearly did not like being lectured and even rebuked by the brainy black president presiding over the majestic chamber.

Even if he and the coterie of white male advisers around him don’t choose to openly acknowledge it, this president is the ultimate civil rights figure — a black man whose legitimacy is constantly challenged by a loco fringe.
For two centuries, the South has feared a takeover by blacks or the feds. In Obama, they have both.
The state that fired the first shot of the Civil War has now given us this: Senator Jim DeMint exhorted conservatives to “break” the president by upending his health care plan. Rusty DePass, a G.O.P. activist, said that a gorilla that escaped from a zoo was “just one of Michelle’s ancestors.” Lovelorn Mark Sanford tried to refuse the president’s stimulus money. Obama said illegal immigrants will not be covered by his health plan. Wilson, rightfully, called him a liar.
The Dowdy One said Obama’s not a liar, but rather, Wilson’s a racist. But she doesn’t mention the lie, or try to defend the lie in any way. She just states flatly that Obama didn’t lie.
But he did.
So? How harsh is the penalty for being a racist?

Obama called Republicans objecting to his Marxist plans liars in general. Wilson called him a liar specifically. Neither should have used those terms during the address. Nevertheless, Obama is a bigger liar than Bill Clinton ever was.

The sad thing is that Ms Dowd takes herself seriously, and considers her pile of steaming excrement as serious thinking.
It was a funny read, though. A perfect caricature of the unhinged left. Except that it was real. Which is what made it so funny, I guess.
I have said this before: there are many beautiful women in the world, some quite as beautiful as Catherine. What makes her special is that she always looks HAPPY. This is what draws us to her, male and female. It seems there is not a mean or bitter bone in her body, and even when she’s trying to look sultry, you know it’s just a pose. Whereas Maureen . . Oh, Maureen, of course you are lonely and bitter; no man is attracted to resentful, nasty, faultfinding speech and all the other ugliness you spew.
As if the color of the president’s skin matters when I get my paycheck, or when I think about Hillary going to China and telling them that if they’ll fund us with money we’ll continue to sell their goods, or remember how Barack told us he was born because his parents hooked up in Selma in 1964 - even though he was born in 1961.
