Howie Carr thread week of Sept. 13, 2009

Howie Carr thread for the week.

radio doings: a report in yesterday's Boston Globe-Democrat says that ESPN is going off the air (WAMG 890) tomorrow and one thing that may well happen is WRKO's sister station, WEEI...you know, the folks who took over Howie's studio...could move to FM (93.7, based in Peabody, most likely, and perhaps 97.7, with a tower on Great Blue Hill) with ESPN landing on AM 850. Nothing is official but Entercom is "in talks" with ESPN. Meanwhile there is also speculation that Entercom may dump WRKO's 680 signal and send the programming perhaps to 107.3 (currently WAAF, rock) whose signal is based west of town. The speculation is that the new WRKO-FM would have WAAF's Greg Hill morning show plus Rush, Howie, etc. (and yes the Felon would prob. go somewhere)

Again nothing is official yet but the move to FM for WEEI, and perhaps WRKO as well, could well be on.

http://bostonradio.blogspot.com (with a report on the WEEI situation, "ESPN out at WAMG 890? by yours truly)

Again, all speculation. If WRKO moves you will hear about it here.

Sunday Herald column ping, about “Mayor Meano” (as he calls himself)

Beautiful day in Mayor Thomas Menino’s neighborhood
By Howie Carr | Sunday, September 13, 2009 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Columnists

As usual, Mumbles Menino summed it up perfectly. It was at the Herald-Ch. 25 debate Thursday afternoon, and Hizzoner was explaining the stakes in this year’s election.

“This is about the future, and a real future, not a future of confusion, but a confusion of movin’ Boston forward, continuin’ to move Boston forward.”

Forward to confusion. And some people say Boston’s 16-year chief executive is a tongue-tied boob. Why, foxy Fox anchor Maria Stephanos even asked Mumbles about his reputation for mangling English, or whatever language it is that he speaks. The mayor acknowledged that he’s not a “silver tongue,” only he said “sil-ell tongue.”

“Sill-ell tongues have led our city and our state and our country many years - they didn’t accomplish as much as we’re accomplishin’ in the city of Boston today.”

So the jokes don’t bother you, Mumbles?

“I mean, I read about it in one newspaper almost every week and, uh, I just go do ’bout my job. It’s about da people. How do the people in the neighborhoods feel about Tom Mean-o.”

Tom Mean-o? Yes, folks, that’s what he said. You can check out the audio for yourself, on our Web site (bostonherald.com). Why is the Mean-o campaign keeping this brilliant orator under wraps? It’s been a while since he’s spoken in one of his TV ads, now they don’t even show a picture of him, just an empty desk. The first time I watched that TV spot, I had the sound off. I was . . . confused. Until the very end, when the mayor’s name came up on the screen, I thought it was a Flaherty spot.

When it comes to answering a question, Mumbles is a man of few words - repeated over and over and over again. Here he is addressing Flats Flaherty, who seems to be, well, flat-lining. In these debates, Flats has been flat, and what the voters are saying about him is not very flattering - stop me, before I turn into Mumbles.

“You wanna talk about the fire trucks?” Mumbles demanded. “I don’t fix the fire trucks, the firefighters fix the fire trucks. So what we did, we brought professionals in to fix those trucks and we haven’t had any problems since the professionals went in there and fixed those fire trucks.”

Did you catch the key words? That’s right, trucks, as in fire trucks, as in being fixed. By professionals. Next, let’s have a little quiz. Can you spot the most important word in this next answer from Mumbles, from a day earlier, also on Channel 25, as to what he wants to do in his fifth term?

“Make sure that we continue to keep connected with our neighborhoods. The neighborhoods are the strength of our city. We gotta continue to be connected with those folks who live in the neighborhoods of Boston and not just one neighborhood but all our neighborhoods.”

If you guessed the key word is “neighborhoods,” you continue to be connected.

Sometimes, though, you know what happens to even the best-laid plans. In this next answer, about crime in the city, the mayor decides to anchor his response with the verb, “work.” But somehow it doesn’t work.

“Lotta, um, crime issues out in our neighborhood. . . . We’re working on those issues by takin’, by workin’ with the neighborhood, 680 crime - community uh workin’ uh with the community workin’ with us, that’s important.”

Almost as important as the T, wouldn’t you agree, Mumbles? What’s up with the MBTA?

“There is a T - a problem with the T. They’re going through a whole over, uh, over-overview with the property and the problem with a T. They have individuals there now lookin’, they been workin’ on it the last three weeks.”

He’s not a sill-el tongue, he’s Mumbles Mean-o. And he’s going to win. Are you confused yet?

I can’t stand listening to this guy, he’s so trite. Has he ever ever taken a strong principaled stand and lead the charge on anything? I’ve never heard of anything of note that he originated.

From one of the Herald reporters’ blogs.....
http://www.bostonherald.com/blogs/news/daily_briefing/index.php/2009/09/14/looks-like-therell-be-a-kennedy-in-the-race-after-all/

Looks like there’ll be a Kennedy in the race after all
Posted by Hillary Chabot at 12:21 pm

More than 40 people have pulled nomination papers for the empty U.S. senate seat, including Joseph A. Kennedy.

Kennedy, not to be confused with former Congressman Joseph P. Kennedy II, is registered as an unenrolled. He joins 42 other candidates who have hoofed it to the Secretary of State’s office because they want to run for the late U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy’s seat.

There are 10 Democratic potential candidates – including Attorney general Martha Coakley, and U.S. Reps Stephen Lynch and Michael Capuano – 4 Republicans and 28 Unenrolled.

Looks like Former Sox pitcher Schilling will have a lot of company should he decide to run.

indeed—of course it all depends on when Howie can get another person in the studio to take down names and phone numbers. I’m sure he’ll announce when it will be—Fridays tend to be a day he usually picks (because that’s when his help can show up)

Tue show ping. Lacking union support, Lynch says he won’t run. Is it down to Coakley vs. Pagliuca (Celts owner) or
Capuano, who may jump in?

http://bostonherald.com/news/politics/view/20090915rep_stephen_lynch_decides_against_kennedy_seat/srvc=home&position=3

>>A source close to the campaign said Lynch faced waning support from labor, which is supposed to be his strongest support base. Several unions have already endorsed Attorney General Martha Coakley.
City Year founder Al Khazei pulled papers to run for the seat today and Boston Celtics co-owner Stephen Pagliuca is also seriously considering a run.
U.S. Rep. Michael Capuano (D-Somerville), who has hired heavyweight fundraiser Bob Farmer, is expected to announce
his candidacy this week

Maybe good news for Brown—conservative voters (unenrolled) won’t have Lynch as a choice

Martha My Dear is also now favoring the “gov appoints temp senator” deal now; I think they’re making it so whomever gets appointed can still run in the special election

None of the delegation wants to look weak when the redistricting happens next year. Or the Kennedy machine wants Capuano out of the way so Spawn of the Wizard of Uhs can take the “Kennedy Seat”.

Steve Pagliuca’s latest game’s gonna cost lots of Green
By Howie Carr | Wednesday, September 16, 2009 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Columnists

Apparently, Chris Gabrieli was not available this year. So Steve Pagliuca is stepping up - he will be the Token Rich Guy in the Senate fight.

Good old Steve - he is about to have his suit cleaned, with him in it. Round up all the usual suspects, I mean consultants. There’s another big payday coming.

This year’s mark is an owner of the Celtics [team stats], which must have been quite a thrill for a while - “Look at my championship ring!” But now Steve needs a new toy. For a while, he and Jack Connors were thinking about buying a dreadfully boring, left-wing broadsheet, but something happened.

Maybe Steve realized even with his $400 million fortune, if he bought the Globe he’d be flat broke in six or seven years.

Steve made his money at Bain. In other words, he’s a Mitt Romney guy. But the filthy rich aren’t Republicans anymore. It’s just not cool. Being a Democrat is as de rigueur as owning a) a cottage on Nantucket and b) a Prius. I’m sure he’s very, very concerned about his carbon footprint.

As a Democrat, Pagliuca won’t have to worry about unemployed factory workers from Indiana being bused in to embarrass him the way they were when Mitt ran for the Senate against Teddy in 1994.

So he’s going to use Doug Rubin, who will work next year for Deval Patrick, and Tad Devine, who has already signed up for Treasurer Tim Cahill’s campaign. Which means next year that Rubin’s candidate will be slamming Devine’s candidate for being ripped off by greedy hedge-fund managers like Bernie Madoff.

But this fall, Rubin and Devine will be working together on TV spots about how wonderful this other hedge-fund manager is.

You can’t blame Pagliuca for succumbing to the fantasy that he can win elective office. Look at the dopes who are already there. Take Mumbles, please. In the land of the five-watt bulbs, the 10-watt bulb shall lead. And Pagliuca has to be thinking, most of these hacks in office are night lights.

Problem is, running for office becomes addictive for these rich egomaniacs. Chris Gabrieli is apparently in recovery, but he’s a three-time loser over the last 11 years. Steve Grossman ran for governor, now he’s going for treasurer. Then there’s Christy.

I’m sure Pagliuca fancies himself a Politically Correct Mitt Romney, who lost to Teddy and then came back and won the second time around. The difference is, Mitt had Jane Swift. Whatever else you can say about Martha Coakley, she has nothing in common with Swifty except gender and a 413 area code.

Hey Steve, can I read your fortune? It’s about to take a $10 million hit - your fortune I mean. Around you I see Larry Rasky, or maybe George Regan, and definitely Boyce Slayman. I see . . . dead presidents. And they’re all leaving your wallet.

Beware beware beware of the naked man
Won’t somebody help the naked man—Randy Newman
(Alcohol WAS involved)

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/2341614/posts

OCALA, Fla. – Authorities say a Florida man was charged with driving under the influence after he was spotted riding his motorcycle naked. The Marion County deputy was driving on Interstate 75 early Tuesday when he spotted what appeared to be a naked man on a motorcycle. The deputy caught up with 45-year-old J. Dante Krauss at a red light and stopped him.

Capt. Mike Rolls said Krauss could not explain where he was coming from or why he was naked. Rolls said the deputy asked him if he had been drinking, and he answered that he had. Breathalyzer tests revealed blood alcohol levels above .08, the state’s legal limit to drive.

Krauss was charged with what Rolls said turned out to be his fifth DUI. Jail records showed he was later released on $20,000 bail. They did not list an attorney and his phone number was not listed.
