City Lawmakers Rally Around Embattled Rep. Rangel
Sep 13, 2009 10:04 am US/Eastern

NEW YORK (CBS) - City lawmakers are rallying around Congressman Charles Rangel as the House Ethics Committee looks into his finances.

Supporters say everyone needs to wait before passing judgment. There were dozens of voices Saturday, many of them local politicians, pleading for patience.

"We ask for fairness," City Council member Inez Dickens said.

"We want to expose the truth," councilwoman Melissa Mark Viverito said.

Many of the demonstrators were livid.

"Leave Charlie the hell alone!" Reverend Reggie Williams, of the American Red Cross, said.

All of the protesters were asking for the public to withhold judgment on Rangel until comment first comes from the ethics committee.

"Let the process move forward, unimpeded, but we will not allow for a witch hunt," Assembly member Adriano Espaillat said.

"I mean, he hasn't bought them – he made a contribution to them," Hazel Dukes, of the NAACP, said. "They're his colleagues. They make contributions all the time."

Republican colleagues and the Washington Post have now called for Rangel's resignation.

"He's come under attack," assembly member Keith Wright said.

But Rangel's defenders say that's worse than passing sentence before a verdict.

"Our congressman is a victim of a smear campaign!" Espaillat said.

Governor Paterson wasn't at the rally because of a scheduling conflict, but he says he fully supports Rangel as well. There's still no word on why Rangel himself wasn't present.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she will not give in to public demands for Rangel's removal as head of the House Ways and Means Committee.

"They're trying to take him down, but that's not going to happen," Former NYC Mayor David Dinkins said.

That's not up to you, dink.

I got it.

White guys saying “nappy headed ho” or “You lie!” hve got to go.

But a consistent hypocritical tax cheat who happens to be their same skin color? Nawwwww . .why, that’s racism.

I say whoever is giving Rangel a pass on his tax problems should also be investigated. The IRS needs to start looking into all the politicians who come to the defense of a tax cheat! If Rangel is innocent then the investigation will conclude so.

The Pelosidiot wants Wilson to apologize, but protects this slime mold.

THIS is the democratic party in action.

"Leave Charlie the hell alone!" Reverend Reggie Williams,

The people who defend this clown, are either a) Black, or b) people who do not pay taxes.

This guy is both.

There's still no word on why Rangel himself wasn't present.

Present at WHAT? A fund raiser? Party? A tax-cheat Charlie rally? Some kind of RAT meeting? It's never stated.

The only FBI that is going to investigate Charlie is the Fat Boys Institute.

The corruption in the system is so bad, sometimes I wonder if it’s even possible to reform it. I like Glenn Beck, but I think his idea to “quarantine” the corruption is a bit naive. And good luck getting 56 “refounders”. I wish I were not so pessimistic, but some days I think we’ve passed the tipping point where we can reform the system by working within it. Our fundamental government system is extremely sound, but it has been effectively dismantled.

The funny part of this story is that New York City thinks it is more moral and intelligent than are Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia, Washington DC or Baltimore (for starters).

I liken this to “Divine right of Kings”. Do these people really belive they are above the law? Do they believe they can “fight” the voters? Something is terribly wrong here. These people do not decide who stays. We do!
