The First Amendment, as rewritten under the McCain-Feingold campaign finance law: "Congress shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, except if it is funded by a corporation, unless it is a media corporation, or if the speech occurs just prior to an election, unless it is in the form of a book, which, even though the law covers books, too, the Federal Election Commission would never apply that law to books because we say so, though we said something entirely different a couple of months ago."
In an apoplexy of righteous indignation over the corrupting influence of filthy lucre on our political process, Congress in 2002 passed the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act, which I prefer to call McCain-Feingold to remind everyone of the two culprits chiefly responsible for it, Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona and Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold of Wisconsin.
It has created an impenetrable bureaucratic maze of legalese that has gagged those who wish to participate in election campaigns.

remind me again who was the other rino GOP-senator from the Senate Centrist Coalition, who was crucial pushing this? Conservatives tried to stop them.. No, Fred, I will never forgive you or McCreepy for raping the constitution.
I was living in a small city during the prior (2004) elections and the GOP group struggled with this. We couldn’t even let groups of ladies buy a table together at fundraisers and write separate checks (for $50 each) to the person who put the whole thing on her charge card. Each one had to write a separate check, which led to mass confusion and lots of unsold seats.
The Dems had hired a special person who went through every GOP expenditure, trying to trip us up. Needless to say, this was absolutely chilling, particularly since the local press (a New York Times paper) was fond of coming out with inflammatory headlines about “fraud” because some old lady had made a mistake when she wrote out her check.
The GOP doesn’t have as many professional campaign people, and the few it does have at a state level are mostly naive college kids; the Dems, on the other hand, had hired a bunch of lawyers who were probably ambulance chasers in their day jobs and lurked in the background at every single political event the GOP conducted.
Thanks, McCain. You dun it agin!
Last night I watched C Span and they had the arguments before the Supreme Court on...Quite interesting...
