WASHINGTON (AFP) A top Al-Qaeda operative who figures high on an FBI list of wanted terror suspects was killed in a US military raid in southern Somalia Monday, a US official told AFP.
The official, who asked to remain anonymous, named the dead man as Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan, a Kenyan wanted for questioning for 2002 attacks in Mombasa on a hotel and an Israeli airliner.
ABC news and Fox News, quoting US officials, said Nabhan was killed when at least one US helicopter fired on a convoy carrying suspected Al-Qaeda targets in southern Somalia earlier Monday.
An American official told ABC that a US Navy ship had been nearby to monitor the situation and provide assistance if needed.
Somali elders and witnesses said foreign military forces onboard four helicopters had staged the raid, opening fire on a vehicle and killing people inside.

Betcha a drone or two were used as well.
I’m thinking a few Delta operators or SEALs, kinda like the opening scene in the movie Black Hawk Down.
Hhmmmmmmmmm.
Has Cindy Sheehan started a hunger strike yet?
Has Teddy Kennedy denounced this "excessive use of force" yet?
Send it to 'gitmo for waterboarding.
“...Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan, a Kenyan...” Obama is not going to be happy!
Got to be Delta. Probably launched out of Mombasa. Heard CNN reporting it was an helicopter raid. They landed and took the body for positive ID.
“Men sleep peacefully in their beds at night because rough men stand ready
to do violence on their behalf.”
God bless our special operators.
On the snooze at the top of the hour, they said Obama authorized the strike.
These people think they can go driving around, in a convoy no less!
Did they read them their Miranda rights before the bomb detained them?
This was to big a thing for him not to have approved it.
They wanted him for questioning, but it looks like they wanted him dead just a little bit more. Heh heh.
He is ‘The Man’ , if you will.
Nothing like a HeLLFiRe greeting card with missile attached to say HELLooooo
FoxNews is saying USN SEALS, but I do not give them enough credit to know the difference.
In any regards, it is the feel good story of the day.
FBI most wanted list, how pathetic. One can only just shake ones head.
: )
GRRRREAT news! Thanks for the ping; post. WOOOOOHOOOOOO!

“Somali insurgents vow to avenge US raid”
MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) -
SNIPPET: “The al-Shabab commander told The Associated Press on Tuesday the insurgent group will try toretaliate against America for the raid that killed Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan in southern Somalia on Monday. The commander spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly.”
For what it’s worth, aren’t all Marine Expeditionary Units special operations capable?
How many commanders do they have?
One for each drone we have?
Seriously...I don’t know, because like gophers, when 1 is killed or captured; another one pops up.
Okay guess he’s just another member of the anonymous commander pool. :^>
Yep.

“Commando raid in Somalia is latest in covert operations across the globe”
By BILL ROGGIO
September 15, 2009 10:25 AM
SNIPPET: “Yesterday’s daring raid in southern Somalia that targeted and killed a senior al Qaeda leader wanted for several deadly attacks is the latest in a series of covert operations carried out by US and allied special operations. At least four other high-profile raids by ground forces took place in Pakistan, Madagascar, and Syria over the past several years, while others have gone unreported, according to US officials.
The successful Somali raid targeted Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan, a senior al Qaeda leader in East Africa as well as a senior leader in Shabaab, al Qaeda’s surrogate in Somalia. Nabhan is thought to train terrorists in Somalia and has been at the forefront in cementing ties between Shabaab and al Qaeda. He has been wanted for his involvement in the 1998 suicide attacks against US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, as well as leading the cell behind the 2002 terror attacks in Mombasa, Kenya, against a hotel and an airliner.
Reports of the operation are still unclear as the US military has refused to comment. But various press accounts from eyewitnesses and unnamed intelligence sources provide a glimpse of the operation.”
