Mike Lupica: Shrill shouters betray post-9/11 promises to be best we can be (attacks Mark Levin)
New York Daily News ^ | Monday, September 14th 2009 | Mike Lupica, annoying sportswriter posing as a political commentator

Posted on 09/14/2009 5:48:08 PM PDT by presidio9

Across from the World Trade Center site there were more flowers than usual outside Engine 10, Ladder 10, the legendary New York firehouse known as Ten House. There are always more flowers, and signs, and photographs and flags, when there is another anniversary of Sept. 11.

So the FDNY Memorial Wall, stretching down Greenwich St., was alive with color and handmade art yesterday morning. A "Flag of Heroes," listing the names of emergency service personnel who gave their lives eight years ago, hung outside Ten House at the corner of Greenwich and Liberty.

There was a wreath for the Rev. Mychal Judge, sent by FDNY pipes and drums, and a sign halfway down the block that simply read, "8 years, just yesterday."

Derrick Johnson, in an orange hardhat, part of a skeleton crew working for FJC Security Services across the street, watched the solemn parade of people along the Memorial Wall, whose bas-relief sculpture so powerfully tells the story of Sept. 11, 2001.

"Been busier than usual around here the last few days, as you might expect," he said. "But it's always quiet on Sundays, just like church."

Johnson shook his head, kept his voice low, because of the sacred ground behind him and the scene in front of him, the line of people constant.

"Rest of the country, that's where all the yelling seems to be," he said. "Like to see them try it down here."

Out of this place, out of what happened on that day, was supposed to come the best of us, and not just because of the ones who died here, the firefighters remembered on the wall outside Ten House, those names on the Flag of Heroes.

We promised ourselves we were going to be a better city and a better country because of what happened. We told ourselves that we knew what really mattered now. In the aftermath of the worst day the city and the country had known, we promised to find the best in ourselves, and in each other.

And on this most recent anniversary of Sept. 11, the country seems as full of hate and noise as it has ever been. This is an America where Rep. Joe Wilson, whoever he is, thinks he can call the President of the United States a liar, Wilson talking to the President the way he would the help, or some waiter who was supposed to bring him another drink.

Wilson really did sound like somebody who had been on hold for an hour, waiting to scream about socialism to Rush.

But why wouldn't Wilson scream out the way he did? This is a time when a radio host like Mark Levin routinely refers to President Obama as "that jerk," all in the name of liberty, of course, and the fight against tyranny. Or maybe this all just comes out of a fury that there weren't enough screamers to keep the black guy from getting elected.

I hate Mike Lupica blog. No comments yet (and more of a sports blog), but it could still use a few additions.

BTW, it amazes me how many people here in New York don’t know that Lupica is a closet Red Sox Fan who grew up in New Hampshire and went to BC (back when it as a day school).

In 1856 SC Senator Preston Smith Brooks beat Republican Senator Charles Sumner (MA)...

The damned Dems are the ones being uncivil...the guy apologized, so STFU....what a bunch of little puissants, getting all wee wee’d up (now that expression makes sense to me)...pissy little twerps....

So, in other words, he is reducing it to the following:

If people believe the conservative black person (Thomas) and don’t believe the liberal black person (Hill,) then they are a racist.

Roll eyes...

Roll eyes...

Also, if you remember last summer, attacking Reverend Jeremiah Wright's beliefs that we brought 9/11 on ourselves, our government created the AIDS virus as a means of genocide against people of color, or we are engaged in a terrorist war against the Palestinians also makes you a racist.

Most of these people obviously never hear the tale of the boy who cried "wolf" when they were little. Eventually the word "racist" (currently the worst accusation that can be labled) will have no meaning whatsoever.

Mark Levin Ping

BTW, Mark said some pretty hilarious things about Lupica this afternoon. I thought I was out of the posting Lupica business, but the Great One pulled me back in.

“What is this Lupunka and why should anyone care what it has to say?”
He is a sportswriter for that cess pool field at the mouth of the Hudson River.
And no one should pay any attention to him, period.

It’s been 11 years and you still haven’t figured out yet how to create a homepage, so I have no way of knowing where you’re posting from. That being said, I know I’m happier living in that cesspool on the Hudson, the Financial, Cultural, and professional sports capital of the world. Birthplace (or adoptive home) of a disporportionate percentage of the great conservative minds today and in our nation’s history (including Alexander Hamilton, the father of American Conservatism). Yeah, there are 8 million people here, and most of them are liberal, but NYC is unlike any other city on earth. You take the bad with the good, and it’s still the greatest city in the history of civilization. That’s one of the reasons why the terrorists keep targeting it.

Whether or not they realize it, liberals and the liberal MSM are burning up the effectiveness of the race card in their quest to protect and defend Obama and/or his policies.

They burned some with Wright, some with Holder’s “cowards” comments, some by calling the Obama Joker posters racist, some by calling the Tea Partiers racists, some by calling the word socialism racist and so on.

The race card is still a weapon but it is no longer a weapon of mass destruction.

BTW, good thread from top to bottom.

Yet we excuse Zer0 who sat in Rev Jeremiah Wright's church for twenty years. When did Wright say anything without taking it up a notch, if not to the moon? When Wright said that "blacks should not sing God Bless America” but “God damn America,” and Joe Wilson says, “You lie!” there is a huge difference in rhetorical outrage. For people who drive themselves to fury over Wilson's very human response to an injustice, we see an example of people so wrought with their political world view that they are blind to their own deception. How can we trust such people as Mike Lupica to bring justice to other betrayals to men's freedom if they are unable to see the humanity of Joe Wilson's cry for the truth?

My apologies to you and other New Yorkers. I got carried away with the hyperbole. New York City is not a cesspool though many of its politicians are of the stuff that flows into the pool.
I commuted to work in New York (including offices in the World Trade Center) every week for 15 years. My daughter lived in the City for 13 years and broke my wife's heart when she moved to Boston because my wife trips to the stores, shows and cultural events were drastically reduced.
I still have friends in the City and would be embarrassed to have insulted them. It was not a personal attack on New Yorkers but on the political culture that exists in the City. I love the city, hate the politicians, except King.(I know he's not from the City but the NY Post covers him.)

I recognized your remark as an off-hand one, but I still have very little tolerance for people putting NYC down primarily because the great wealth generated here attracts and supports a disproportionate share of lower middle class and blue collar types who inevitibly vote Democrat. Glad to see you understand that.

Incidently, Peter King was the best friend Gerry Adams (political head of Europe’s largest terrorist oranization) ever had until President Bush told him to cut it out. He was also wrong on the Dubai Ports thing, and the fact that he partnered with Hillary Clinton on that one should tell you all you need to know. I have no use for the man, even if that means there isn’t a single NY politican I like. I have less use for Rudy, but I will be voting for him if he runs for Governor.
