PORTLAND, Ore. - Vandals in Portland targeted some pretty pricey cars over night, throwing acid or paint stripper all over them. No one has claimed responsibility, and there's no telling just how many people were involved.
The damage to as many as 15 cars is expensive. Here's one, a Hummer from the besieged Vic Alfonso Cadillac Dealership in Northeast Portland. You can see a number of spots where the paint is now peeling off the car.
A sociology professor at Portland State University said there are plenty of reasons that could have motivated the vandals to do all of this damage.
"The Humvee has become sort of this symbol of our culture in general," said PSU Sociology Professor Randy Blazak. "It symbolizes conspicuous consumption, environmental degradation, it symbolizes the war."
The Portland Police Bureau has just confirmed that 15 vehicles were damaged in the vandalism. Aside from that, detectives are being pretty tight lipped about the case. However, they did confirm that agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation are helping in the investigation.
Blazak points to the option that this could be the effort of an eco-terrorism group. "The environmental groups don't typically kill anybody," said Blazak, "but they can cause millions of dollars in damages to property so they get the full attention of federal law enforcement for that reason."
The Earth Liberation Front said on its Web site that it is not claiming responsibility, but said that the act is "an evident response to the impact SUVs and Hummers have on the environment."
Police said there is a possibility that this wasn't even eco-terrorism. Anyone could have done this damage.

Would it gain the same attention from the FBI if it was not a GM (ie. government motors) dealership? If it were say, a Ford dealership owned by a staunch conservative, would the FBI be as interested?
Probably unfair questions, but they have to tickle at the back of your mind. This is just another in a long series of problems with the government buying into GM and Chrysler...

I hear what you’re saying but it’s standard procedure for the FBI to get involved in any suspected eco-terrorist act. This has been going on in WA, OR, CA, CO and other states for 15 or so years.

Back when I was a COTR (contracting officer's technical representative) and DoD employee we had strict guidelines. Obviously, we couldn't play favorites when evaluating contract proposals. But going further, we had to studiously avoid even the appearance of impropriety. Government ownership in GM makes that just about impossible in cases like this, even if we trust that this is an entirely normal investigation.

Crazy liberals. Consider this: Those SUVs that have been vandalized will be repainted.
That entails, sanding and/or stripping the paint, refinishing, and all of the supplies and chemicals that are used in those processes.
Not to mention all of the paint fumes that will enter the air.

What’s even funnier is that the damaged vehicle pictured is the “small” Hummer, with the straight-six. It gets reasonable gas mileage, and like most modern cars, emits few pollutants that in some cities it could be said to leave the air cleaner than it found it. Had it been the H2, or the H1 (though those are rare on the ground), it might be more understandable, but going after the H3 for being an afront to nature is like criticizing small bow-rider ski boats for polluting the ocean.

That’s a good point. I saw some video earlier from a TV station and the damage shown on this vehicle is minor compared to others.

Joe Bastardi of Accuweather.com on Accuweather’s website and again on Bill O’Reilly’s show 9/9/09 presents irrefutable evidence which debunks claims by environmentalists that California’s wild fires were caused by Global Warming. In a few short minutes and with just a few graphics of charts and images He debunks contemporary claims of Global Warming entirely.
Certainly, many far better than myself, have refuted the false claims of Global Warming and the so called human cause of it. But for obvious reasons, those who’s attempts to do so have been thwarted by a biased agendized media, disinterested and dishonest politicians, and an ignorant distracted public.
Few of us were of the scientific background to immediately refute or take the time or expend the resources to independently research the topic entirely to where we would be fully informed. Combing the volumes of research data where deep within lay the truths that would expose the fraud has been something inaccessible to most Americans.
This is how they fooled and/or silenced most of us. Not because we were stupid but because we lacked the “at finger tip” tools to refute the liars as they told their tale.
Here is a tool. Here is a very simple, easy to replay, irrefutable presentation that is for even the layman (which most of us are) to comprehend and understand.
Not being a skilled poster I apologize in advance. I’ve always sought a simple brief presentation (which I knew would come along eventually) that I could show people I know which would prove Global Warming to be a fraud, or at a minimum, show it to be highly suspect.
Think for a moment of all the billions if not trillions of dollars which has been stolen from the American taxpayer to prop up a complete fraud. Because if it indeed is a fraud, then every action based on that fraud that has been taken is equally fraudulent also. The list includes; Greenhouse Gasses, Cafe Standards, all “green” initiatives (Fed,State,Local), “Green” related products, bogus research grants, all related taxes, all government legislation and bureaucracies, Climate Change, Oil consumption and exploration restrictions, and all other actions taken in response to a completely false and unsubstantiated premise called “Global Warming”.
All the fraud, all the wasted energy, all the wasted tax and business expenses would end if we can just reach everyone with the truth.

It’s been my understanding that the Hummer is more eco-friendly, from “cradle to grave,” then the Prius (nickle in the battery, multiple cross-oceanic transport in construction of battery, etc).

The Earth Liberation Front press office has posted news of this week's vandalism at a Northeast Portland auto dealership, saying the attack appears to be the work of eco-saboteurs.
As many as 15 vehicles -- most of them Hummers -- were damaged in the incident. But so far, the vandals who poured acid on the vehicles at Vic Alfonso Cadillac Hummer have yet to claim responsibility. The dealership is in the 600 block of Northeast 12th Avenue.
Police were alerted to the crime at 6:12 a.m. Monday. Central Precinct detectives are investigating and the FBI is assisting.
Typically in such an attack, underground saboteurs strike out at enterprises they accuse of profiting from despoiling the natural world, such as auto dealerships that sell large sport utility vehicles and trucks that produce more air pollution than smaller cars.
They then send a message to the Earth Liberation Front press office, which publishes the so-called "communiques."
Sometimes, vandals tag the scene of the crime with "ELF" or other graffiti.
"As far as I know, there was no tagging" at Vic Alfonso, said Beth Anne Steele, a spokeswoman for the FBI in Portland, which has stepped in to assist police in their vandalism investigation.
The FBI, which describes the Earth Liberation Front as a leading domestic terrorist group, has spent much of the last decade poring through the wreckage of car dealerships across the United States struck by eco-saboteurs.
In March 2001, a cell of ELF arsonists struck Romania Chevrolet in Eugene, setting a lot full of SUVs ablaze and causing $1 million in damage.
That attack was dwarfed on Aug. 22, 2003, when arsonists struck several auto dealerships in the Los Angeles suburbs. In a single night, they caused $2.5 million in damage.
The next morning on a lot full of smoldering, $50,000 Hummer H2s in West Covina, investigators found spray-painted slogans that included "SUVS SUCK," "FAT LAZY AMERICANS," and -- as elsewhere across the nation -- the ubiquitous "ELF."
Detective Mary Wheat, Portland police spokeswoman, said anyone with information concerning this incident should contact Detective Matt Horton at 503-823-0268.

As Jeff Dunham's Walter would say, "Way to go, dumba##!" Good job releasing acid and dissolved paints and finishes into the environment. Don't even try to say the ends justifies the means. You're simply mean, angry people with an axe to grind but no real concern for the environment or being responsible citizens of the world. Hypocrites.
