March on Washington: How Big Was the Crowd

How big is it?” is certainly one of the world’s most dreaded questions.

In fact, after the Million Man March in 1995, Congress restricted the National Park Service from even making estimates — a restriction that was maintained for 14 years and then quietly rescinded this January for the Obama inauguration.

I’m talking about crowds, of course. I can’t take you people anywhere.

There have been a lot of estimates, from the “official” one of 60 to 70 thousand, up to the rumored 2 million. Let’s see if we can make a plausible estimate with some rigor and some idea of possible error.

This is probably the best indicator of how many people were at the march.

It was big enough!

Big enough to have the ninnie running scared all over giving speeches like his worlds on fire, . . which it is!

There IS a better way to scare hell out of them and you won’t have to leave home.

I will bet the house on 400,000. There were 4000 charter buses, about 200,00 people. There were enormous demands on the Metro system, minimum 200,000 extra riders. Ergo 400,000 marchers minimum. I’ll entertain arguments for larger numbers. Smaler numbers do not parse.

It won’t be the size that opens their eyes but the rhythm: iambic pentameter!

You’re forgetting all the people that arrived by auto, and all the locals that participated. I thought, too about 400-500k, but being a part of the march, I didn’t have an inkling how huge that was.

I’m also assuming that not everyone (especially the locals) on the march stayed for the rally afterwards.

I’m revising my number upwards according to the article, until, there’s some methodology explained behind the “people meter.”

It was much larger than that, I think. I flew in and 1/3 of the people on my plane (from Florida) were going to the march. Some of them had literally decided to go just the night before and they were coming on their own, not even with friends from their towns.

Also, because the traffic backed up, some of the buses and individuals couldn’t make it in until others were beginning to leave.

Finally, I’ve been in pro-life marches that had 500,000 people (also not even mentioned by the press, of course), and they looked nowhere near as large as this. I was pretty stunned. I thought it would be a few hundred thousand, but nothing prepared me for looking down Pennsylvania Ave. and seeing an absolute gridlock. Because the lawns were already full before the official start of the event, the police weren’t letting more people on them, so finally they had to let them onto the mall because there was no place for the marchers to go.

I’ll take your house - if it’s anywhere in the South. I was on the Capitol lawn and there was no room. According to the estimates for the inauguration, that’s 250,000. The crowd spilled over into a huge parking lot across the street. That’s another 100,000. Then the crowd backed up from the Capitol to the Washington Monument and all around the Tidal Basin. Conservatively, that’s another 50,000. Plus there were people moving in and out of the crowd all day. The line up Pennslyvania Ave went all the way back as far as the eye could see for 3 hours. Again, the inauguration estimates were for 900,000. That’s 1.5 million! You left out those who drove, came on other days or were locals.

What one could conclude from this article is that the crowd was easily as big as the inaugural crowd and about twenty times cleaner. This crowd picked up after themselves, according to reports, thus saving the US Park service hundreds of thousands of clean-up dollars.

The “media” can downplay the numbers all they like. You can bet that every Congress-critter with eyes was “eyballing” that crowd, and calculating all those HIGHLY MOTIVATED conservative voters. You can also bet that said impression of VERY large numbers of highly motivated conservatives will help to put a rod up the spine of those newly elected “Blue Dog” Democrats.

On Sat. Marine One passed over head heading to the WH occasioning talk between myself and a woman who happened to be next to me. She was from (of all places) Massapequa Long Island. She had come with a friend. They both had brought the kids (4 or 5 between them). I was quite surprised. Thirtysomething women from Massapequa who are politically charged enough to go to Washington to make noise, AND schlep the kids along as well would have been a demographic rarity not very long ago. In a million years I would not have expected to see someone from the hair, nails, shoes and clothes brigade in front of the White House.

I was completely amazed at the people who were there. I can’t think of any time I have ever seen a more diverse group of Americans united in a common purpose. I hope Obama and the Dems are quaking in their loafers.

They are, that’s why The senate voted overwhelmingly to defund Acorn and the administration decided to kick them out of the census. It’s also why they say they are going to keep illegals from health care. And you are probably going to see other sudden changes. Given Dem knowledge of these tactics seeing maybe a million activists organizing and being energized on the other side has got to be pretty scary.

Was the Mall leading to the Washington monument covered as well?

This seems to be an issue as some are saying only Penn Ave was used and the Capitol lawn.
If so, then I can see 1 million people being there

Ok, I just saw some nice shots from what looks like the Captiol steps up high.
The first square past the Capitol pool, (ON THE MALL) had a pretty large crowd.

SO it is more clear now.

You know, I was there, and it's impossible to estimate the size of a crowd from inside. I don't even CARE about the numbers....it's irrelevant. The only people who really care are those trying to brush the entire march aside.

I do very much care that it's been labeled racist. I saw no sign of racism, and the people were decent, hard working, clean, careful, good citizens of our country there to redress grievances, and the media and leftists are doing everything they can to marginalize and detract from the intent and fact that this many people oppose the Obama agenda.
