March on Washington: How Big Was the Crowd?
Pajamas Media ^ | September 14, 2009 | Charlie Martin

Posted on 09/15/2009 9:33:35 PM PDT by JSDude1

“How big is it?” is certainly one of the world’s most dreaded questions.

In fact, after the Million Man March in 1995, Congress restricted the National Park Service from even making estimates — a restriction that was maintained for 14 years and then quietly rescinded this January for the Obama inauguration.

I’m talking about crowds, of course. I can’t take you people anywhere.

There have been a lot of estimates, from the “official” one of 60 to 70 thousand, up to the rumored 2 million. Let’s see if we can make a plausible estimate with some rigor and some idea of possible error.

TOPICS: Editorial; News/Current Events
KEYWORDS: 912project; crowd; estimate; size; teaparty
I was there, and I'd estimate 1.5-1.8 Mil off and on the whole day (8+ hours).

Looks like the MSM decimated in their reports the million plus that actually showed up. Guess these paid shills for 0bama can’t actually afford to tell the truth now, can they?

For every one who made it, how many of us wish we could but could not? Those numbers must be staggering.

Two million, easily.

Penn Ave is three lanes wide in each direction, and there was a river of humanity from the White House to the Capitol, which is sixteen blocks.

Saturday was the biggest rally DC ever held. Ask the cops and the subway workers. And it was certainly larger than the Obamunist jamoboree last January, and that’s got all the lefties mumbling to themselves this week.

I could only compare by using the old football stadium method, and I guessed there was 800,000 to 1,500,000.

Not very scientific, but I will say that any estimate less than 500,000 is FLAT OUT WRONG.

Why? If you don’t want to participate in the discussion, you don’t have to click on the link.

Having been at both the GOE in 2007 and this past weekend, and having seen the way the media covered both, I would say it is an important issue.

Getting hung up on the number is nothing but a media deflection, and the right-wing websites are taking the bait: hook, line & sinker.

The smallest number mentioned is a LOT of patriots. Move along.

Why hasn’t anybody collated the numbers of people between state capitols, local districts + those in DC? I bet there were over 5 million nationwide.

Yes, the liberal media is trying to deflect the importance of the huge crowd by lying about the number attending. Some "right wing" posters are taking the bait hook line and sinker and rather than confronting the liars they want to just "move along".

So more back of the envelope: it’s 1.1 miles from Freedom Park to the Capitol, and Pennsylvania is six lanes plus a middle turn lane and some sidewalks — call it 100 feet wide.

I used Google Earth ruler and get 155 ft from outer pedestrian crossing mark to outer pedestrian crossing mark on Pennsylvania Ave. To make sure Google's ruler was accurate, I used it to measure the Washington Redskins football field and it was within 5 yards.

they’re walking, marching, at something between 2 and 4 miles per hour because that’s how fast people march. Let’s choose 3 mph: that would mean a line of people marching past a single point for three hours would be about 9 miles long.

I doubt that in a demonstration setting, with people of all age and sex carrying banners, placards and signs that the crowd could have done 3mph. Probably more like 1mph-1.5mph

You got it right. It’s not the numbers, it was the message. Something BO got loud and clear when he high-tailed it out of town to the more friendly Minnesota.

+++++++++++++++

Truth and facts matter. We have taken it on the chin from the lefties long enough, and we’re not going to take it any more.

That doesn’t mean obsessing. It does mean demanding common courtesy and respect.

The massive crowds (9/12 pic left) are VERY significant---b/c the MSM measures crowds by the
size of civil rights protests (right pic); which MSM points out extended AROUND the Reflecting Pool.

“paid shills for obama”

It’s obama that can’t let the numbers get out. Who do you think ordered the fire department to release that “official” number? The numbers would be a sure tip off to another of the many coverups this administration must do to increase it’s power over the citizens. Only “we the people” who were there that day can speak the truth.

I was in that crowd, probably in the first 1/4 of the crowd. My estimate of our speed was around 2 mph. I'm sure that it slowed down later on, and I'll admit that we did pass a few folks on the way.

I spoke with a man from Pajama Media - his estimate was around 700,000 people, but I have no idea how good a judge of crowds he is. I know that it was a heck of a lot bigger than the typical 100,000 you'd see at a typical college football game.

The smallest number mentioned is a LOT of patriots. Move along.

I'll put it this way - if Ford only sold 70,000 Focuses in a year, they'd drop the model from their lineup. Likewise, at 700,000 per year, they'd be happy. And at 1 million per year, they'd be ecstatic.

The MSM is trying desperately to marginalize the conservative movement - they know that we stand between this communist president and his goals. It's no secret that the media is in bed with the left, and has been since Walter Cronkite declared the Tet Offensive a loss in 1968. At 70,000, they can call this a 'fringe' group. At 1 million, they can't get away with that.

The actual numbers of the huge crowd in a way are irrelevant. If the cops say it was the Biggest ever then it was and it stands.

The real issue is it symbolizes the beginning of taking our country back, one way or another.
