Bush was preparing to give a speech to the annual meeting of the Conservative Political Action Conference, or CPAC. The conference is the event of the year for conservative activists; Republican politicians are required to appear and offer their praise of the conservative movement.
Latimer got the assignment to write Bush's speech. Draft in hand, he and a few other writers met with the president in the Oval Office. Bush was decidedly unenthusiastic.
"What is this movement you keep talking about in the speech?" the president asked Latimer.
Latimer explained that he meant the conservative movement -- the movement that gave rise to groups like CPAC.
"Let me tell you something," the president said. "I whupped Gary Bauer's ass in 2000. So take out all this movement stuff. There is no movement."

The Republican Party long ago ceased to be any kind of effective vehicle for advancing conservatism.
Do you remember when Ed Gillespie (then RNC chairman) said there was no place in the party for limited government types?
....Sorry, Mr.Bush, your time has come and gone, the conservative base has risen and it is working to take back the GOP.
I’m laughing right now at all the diehard GOP voters here on FR. You guys remind me of the typical beaten wife one sees attacking the cops as they haul away her abusive husband. “But Ah still loves him!” they cry. “Ah can change him!”
LOL
What year did this happen in since President Bush has not been in the Oval office for some time.
Yeah, thanks for that W...
He done remade the GOP so good they can’t even mount a filibuster.
Up until a couple of days ago, I had never heard of this Litimer guy. It sounds like he’s got an axe or two to grind.
Verify before firing begins.
Very typical.

.....one of the most warmed-over clichés about the Bush Administration: [Chris Michel] was usually chipper, though at the moment his face was so pale he must have been the whitest man in the Bush White House. And that was no small accomplishment.
Yowza! Republicans are white and out of touch. Thats fresh.
But wait, theres more in that vein. Describing a previous job on Capitol Hill, Latimer writes: I was assigned to coach Republican senators on how to reach out to the media and entertainment world. (You try explaining The View to a group of 65-year-old white Republican men.)
Hah cause theyre white and men and old they probably smell like Ben-Gay. And theyre clueless. White men are incapable of understanding four women who sit around a table and talk to each other on TV.
Yes, he did redefine the Republican Party.
However not for the better. As evidenced by the choice of McCain as the Standard Bearer.
Others in the mix were lost because of rule changes by Nat’l GOP Party leaders and by the go-along-get-along MSM.
End result: a screwing of the American people.
Yes, ‘We the People’ got screwed!
No one had.
Yet now he's the new hero for the knee-jerk crowd.
And yes, the best thing a former POTUS can do is ride off into the sunset...... silently.
Here we go again. Looks like “former White House speechwriter Matt Latimer” is hawking his tell-all book. Ooooh-ahhh...
What in the hell are you talking about? Nop One is posting their love of Bush on this tread...yet.
I for one can’t stand the socialist scummbag.
Latimer loves Obama....as he said in the WP recently:
Obama is smarter than this. On the campaign trail, his speeches, in clear, coherent English...... Even some of us in the Bush White House studied Obamas speeches and marveled at their grace.
Yep, post-Katrina, right in the middle of his supine second term. "Redefine" must be another way of saying "surrender to the leftists".
GW is. The quote is from two years ago. This is a hit piece designed to sow dissention between conservatives who want to turn the GOP back to Reagan-style conservatism and conservatives who want to dump the GOP as a lost cause. (I could go either way. Both sides have good points, but now is NOT the time for dissension among conservatives. This question will answer itself, or rather the GOP will by how it acts in the coming months.)
That's Hilarious.
Ah the frat boy socialist yankee speaks. Now the true colors are being shown.
Apparently, you are one of those who think there is no difference between the two parties. You are third party, perhaps? Libertarian?
Look at how the two parties vote on every issue. Remove the Rino’s vote, and it’s the Republicans taking the directly opposite position against the whacked out Democrats every time. There IS a difference. This country is a Republic, you know.
Bush and his entire family back to before the revolution has been against the US as an independant nation!
He’s another in a long line of socialist pile of crap!
If it were not 100% consistent with Bush's behavior in office, it wouldn't be getting any traction.
What conservative organization would invite GWB to speak? He is no conservative!
Sounds like a crock of poop.
Oh he redefined the Republican party all right. Into a toothless minority party.
Obama is smarter than this. On the campaign trail, hisspeechesreadings, in clear, coherent English (guess dozens of errrs...ahhhs.. didn't count)...... Even some of us in the Bush White House studied Obamasspeechesreadings and marveled at theirgraceperformance.
Images of Bush in a Wife beaters T-shirt slapping the fools here on FR who still believe he was a conservative, man do they deserve each other.
Spot On.
And when you remind them that Bush gave us "No Child Left Behind" or that Bush gave us the "750 Billion Dollar Medicare Part D," they find some excuse for Bush.
And of course there was that time when Bush pushed the Amnesty Bill.
However, there is some good news, Dubya is going to dress up as a Conservative for Halloween.
He and the Republican congress spent like drunken sailors (no offense to drunken sailors) which was a major reason they lost in 2006 and 2008.
Check out The National Debt Road Trip 2:46 video, to see a graphic representation of Big Government Republicans.
(On bogus NewsMax Article): First on the Ticker: Bush, Palin aide disputes book claims.
Recher said. "Nobody knows who he is. When people heard he was writing a book the most common reaction has been, 'Who?'"
White House insiders don't know who the guy is but you'll buy what he's selling.
But for Ronald Reagan and his conservative movement, GW and his father (and his brother in Florida) could have been elected to nothing. They would have been limited to the occasional small potatoes political appointee appartatchiks as GB Senior had been under Gerry Ford and Nixon (remember, his only elective office had been as a congressman in a safe Houston district). The biggest mistake Ronaldus Magnus made was to elevate this family by choosing someone who stood for nothing as his Vice President.
Bush seemed to go soft in the head part way into his second term.
Maybe he just couldn’t take the pressure any longer.
That’s a non sequitur if I have ever seen one! Bauer may well have been a poor politician. Privately, Bauer probably wishes that GHWB had whupped Dubya’s ass more. The “conservative movement” in 2008, with the pitiful choices forced on us by the dysfunctional GOP primary system, was to sit home on the couch while a racist phony friend of domestic terrorists was elected to the “throne.”
Watch him on all the networks. There you can see your guy rise to stardom.
It will be exciting for you.
Lame ducks show their true colors.
“Let me tell you something,” the president said. “I whupped Gary Bauer’s ass in 2000. So take out all this movement stuff. There is no movement
GWB sounds like he’s back on the sauce. Hell he destroyed the Pubbies and caused the election of the Mam man.
Why should I take the word of someone who wants to sell a book based only on the fact that they spent a year or so writing speeches for GWB?
Screw the speechwriter. Bush showed his contempt for conservatives in broad daylight. It would be like some Obama underling claiming they heard him express admiration for Communism... it wouldn’t matter if it were true or not — we know that he’s a pinko regardless.
It is essentially the same primary system that gave us Ronald Reagan but then it also gave us George W. Bush and John McCain.
That being the case, how would you propose the that GOP change their primary system?
Go pound sand, GW. Amnesty. Sheesh.
Whatever it ought to be, Iowa and New Hampshire aren’t Kansas anymore, Toto.
The left must love all the screaming Latimer’s fantasies are causing. Sometimes conservatives can be really dumb.
Bush “turned” into what he was, A Northeast Country Clubber in the finest William Weld tradition.
You eat it up. You get to salivate over your hated George Bush and join the trash crowd in ogling every appearance the puny speech writer makes.
Don't take the word of the speech writer, but instead look at the actions of George W. Bush.
Signed and pushed for No Child Left Behind
Signed and pushed for the 750 Billion Dollar Medicare Part D
Pushed for Amnesty for Illegal Aliens.
So no, I do not need Bush speech writer to tell me that Bush was not aligned with Conservatives.
Yup, this guy will be the loony left's hero and they will treat every word of his as gospel just like many Freepers.
In his own words, Latimer wanted the WH to be more like "The West Wing". He's just a dweeb craving the spotlight.
