Fallout From ACORN Scandal May Hover Over Other Community Groups (LaRaza!)
Fox News ^ | Sept. 15, 2009 | Fox News

Posted on 09/16/2009 4:46:18 PM PDT by AuntB

As ACORN grapples with a scandal that in recent days has led the Census Bureau to sever ties and the Senate to block housing funding , other groups with similar stated goals are left to wonder how the fallout might affect them.

But the group is on its heels after conservative activists posing as a prostitute and her pimp released hidden-camera videos ....

The Senate voted 83-7 Monday to block Housing and Urban Development Department from giving grants to ACORN.

....Housing and Urban Development Department ... provides funding to 25 groups that, like ACORN, have a national profile and similar goals. Among these groups are ******* Catholic Charities, National Council of La Raza and the National Council on Aging.******

Analysts on poverty and welfare said they believe the scandal will have little impact on these groups....

If Congress blocked funding to ACORN, "it's going to go someplace else," he said. "But that someplace else won't be that much different from ACORN."

Sen. Mike Johanns, R-Neb., said that ACORN has received $53 million in taxpayer funds since 1994 and that the group was eligible for a wider set of funding in the pending legislation, which funds housing and transportation programs.

ACORN received $1.6 million of federal funding for its housing services in the fiscal year ending Sept. 30.

Rector said the government spends more than $700 billion a year assisting low-income people, including cash, housing, food and medical care. "And we have no idea where that money goes," he said. Of that amount, $70 billion goes to what he called "amorphous" social service programs.

"To the extent of what you're seeing, when people see the ACORN operations and the recognition of the closeness of ties between Obama and ACORN, it's a symbol of the overall incompetence of the welfare state."

Someone asked earlier, "What kind of outfit is Acorn"

This is the best explanation I've seen!

from the article:

But Robert Rector, a senior research fellow at the conservative Heritage Foundation and an expert on welfare and poverty said these community organizing networks "basically get paid to make noise" and "serve as a clearinghouse for moving government money around."

I don’t think that the intrepid duo would be allowed in any of their offices.

That is just beyond belief.

Imagine if Glenn Spencer or CCIR or FAIR or SaveOurState or NumbersUSA - all patriotic groups and people trying to uphold our laws and sovereignty - had gotten even a fraction of that kind of money.

The seditionists would have been screaming so loud it would have woken up Harry Byrd.

Oh, yoooo-hoooo, obama -- I think I know where you can "find" the funding for the 10 million folks who can't get insurance. Surely if you're providing them with insurance, they'll no longer need the services of ACORN, right?

MESSAGE TO CONGRESS We demand federal funding for indicted organization ACORN be stopped. We are a nation of laws. It is illegal to force Taxpayers to aid and abet, to subsidize and facilitate, ACORN'S numerous crimes, including:

Pittsburgh TRIBUNE-REVIEW | Tuesday, June 30, 2009 | Walter F. Roche Jr.

A district judge who held another ACORN worker for trial Monday on election law violations urged prosecutors to go after the real culprit, the organization that employed him. "Somebody has to go after ACORN," Senior District Judge Richard H. Zoller said about the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now.

"It's happening all over the country. All you have to do is turn on the television," he said, referring to voter registration fraud charges brought recently against ACORN and its workers in Nevada.

"We will," Allegheny County Detective Robert F. Keenan promised as he wrapped up his testimony. A spokesman for DA Stephen A. Zappala Jr. said following the hearing that the county's investigation into members of ACORN and their activities during the 2008 campaign "remains open and active."
