(CNN) -- Former President Jimmy Carter said Tuesday that racial politics played a role in South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson's outburst during President Obama's speech to Congress last week and in some of the opposition the president has faced since taking office.
Former President Carter tells "NBC Nightly News" that racism has surfaced in opposition to President Obama. "I think an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity toward President Barack Obama is based on the fact that he is a black man, that he's African-American," Carter told "NBC Nightly News." "I live in the South, and I've seen the South come a long way, and I've seen the rest of the country that shares the South's attitude toward minority groups at that time, particularly African-Americans."
"That racism inclination still exists, and I think it's bubbled up to the surface because of belief among many white people -- not just in the South but around the country -- that African-Americans are not qualified to lead this great country. It's an abominable circumstance, and it grieves me and concerns me very deeply," Carter said.
Michael Steele, who is the first African-American to chair the Republican National Committee, denied Wednesday that race is fueling protests.
"President Carter is flat-out wrong," Steele said in a statement. "This isn't about race. It is about policy."

Jimmy Carter is always in a mad rush to make a fool of himself. Just because he won the Nobel Peace Prize doesn’t make him a savant. Yasar Arafat was also a winner of that award.
We that are dissatisfied with Obama and his administration could give a flying flip about race. Its about the rush to bring the USA into third world status. The deficit they are signing us into will bring us into bondage. The president’s advisers can’t wait to shackle the free enterprise system. Others want to shackle those who do not agree with the president’s agenda.
The only race we’re concerned about is the American race.
If this is Carter’s reasoning, there is no wonder he was a dud as our president.

I’ve been furious with Jimmy Carter for over 30 years- but I think I’m not mad at him anymore. He’s a pitiful old man.
People get old in different ways- GHWB goes skydiving to stay alert and loves living. Carter seeks attention.
A dear friend of mine has a dad who’s aging like Carter..he just isn’t rational anymore and says outlandish things hoping for attention. He gets it- so does Carter.

It occurs to me that all these people who keep bringing up the President’s *black half* are the racists...they refuse to see that he isn’t actually black, he is white, just like his momma.

Americans are NOT opposed to obama because he is an African-American. obama is not a real African-American, in the normal sense of that word, a descendant of black American slaves. obama is no American at all, of any kind!! His cracked mother raised him to be a citizen of the world, not America. And that is what obama is—a creature of the New World Order.
People are opposed to obama because his policies are monstrous and evil. He and his hideous “czars” (commissars, really) intend to ration health care for seniors, the disabled, and others, sentence them to early, painful deaths, and to set up a national surveillance system under the guise of “electronic medical records”. Despite the drastically lower quality of health care under the obama system, the whole scheme will be more costly than the current health care system, driving the deficit ever higher and higher.
If one is really interested in health care reform, not demographic engineering and communist dictatorship, one should tear up all bills in Congress, start over (preferably after January 2010), and use an approach like this:

Mara Liasson on the Fox All-Stars this evening opined that Carter was helping the Republicans. Maybe so...but I remember Hillary going on Matt Lauer's program and making up some nonsense about a "vast right-wing conspiracy" which was initially dismissed by pundits but soon became the media template for how the Lewinsky scandal was reported.
