Philadelphia libraries to close Oct. 2

The City of Brotherly Love isn't showing much to book lovers.

All 54 of Philadelphia's libraries are scheduled to close because the state of Pennsylvania has not been able to pass a budget to fund the library system.

"All branch and regional library programs, including programs for children and teens, after school programs, computer classes, and programs for adults, will be cancelled," the Free Library posted in a notice on its Web site. All 250,000 books, disks and other items that have been borrowed are now due Oct. 1, and nothing can be borrowed after Sept. 30.

Pennsylvania lawmakers are still deadlocked over a proposed state budget that was supposed to have been enacted on July 1.

The headline could also read:

“Libraries Have the Weakest Unions.”

How about this, PA...

Replace all tolls with E-Z Pass.

Fire all the toll collectors who are TEAMSTERS (and 90% of whom are aholes anyway).

Use the savings to fund the libraries.

How sad, but we can pay for illegals and continue to send aid to countries that hate us. Our govt does not take care of our own.

The library needs a budget cut FAST!!!

Around me it’s a kick-back scheme for teachers. They get $150 to to teach silly 1 to 1 1/2 hr classes rather than letting a college student do the same class for $15/hr or paying a reasonable wage say $25-30/hr.. In return the teachers lobby for more library funds..

I was wondering how long it would take, you’re quick.

You may want to read some sarcasm into my comment.

My bad. :) There are people who want to do away with public libraries though. I can’t imagine my childhood without them.

I was born and raised in Philly. It is controlled by Democrats. It is a disaster. We had a saying for visitors. “If you want any love here, you better bring your brother with you.”

A very good friend of mine (who happens to be black) refers to her hometown of Philly as ‘The City of Brothers.’

Typical local government way to punish people for not giving them more tax money to waste.

They always cut back on a highly visible service that will affect the most people.
You don’t see them cutting back on leftist wealth redistribution programs and handouts for the moocher class.

All 54 of Philadelphia's "libraries" are scheduled to close because the state of Pennsylvania has not been able to pass a budget to fund the library system.

It could just as easily read HOSPITALS under Obamacare. In Kanada they run out of money about the end of October.

Well, that is not entirely accurate. Philadelphia is a city of neighborhoods. When I was a kid there were black neighborhoods, Jewish meighborhoods, Italian and Irish neighborhoods.

For some reason the most beautiful girls we encountered in high school always lived in neighborhoods that required crossing other ethnic communities. In fact, if you were unlucky, you got stomped into a meatball by the neighborhood guys whose turf you dared to be caught in.

Through the years whites moved to the suburbs and blacks gradually became numerous enough to take political power. There are still ethnic neighborhoods, but Democrats control power in the city. The mayor is black. Members of City Council are black, but there are still representatives of most ethnic groups in Council too.
Republicans seem resigned to being perpetually in the minority. They get there slice of the patronage jobs and it looks like they will never regain control.

As far as I am concerned I was fortunate to get out of there. About the only thing I miss about the place is Chinese food and the Italian market in South Philly.

Philadelphia has many historic sites, including the Liberty Bell. It is a great place to visit. It is also a great place to be from.
