Happy Birthday, US Constitution!

On September 17, 1787, the supreme law of the United States was adopted by its people. Signed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the US Constitution was ratified by conventions in each state, in the name of “The People”. So durable are its words that it is the oldest written constitution in the world.


This preordained parchment laid forth the three branches of our government: a bicameral Legislative Congress; an executive branch led by the President; and a judicial branch headed by the Supreme Court.

Of the 4,543 words in the Constitution, perhaps none are more powerful or more poignant of the true reason our Republic exists than those found in our Preamble:

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, ensure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

If you forgot to send a birthday card today, or bake a cake with 222 candles on top – no worries.

Do the next best thing – please set aside just five minutes of your day to spend some time with the old lady – the US Constitution.

As you read each word, try to fully appreciate the gift our Forefathers gave us, and why it’s so important that we “The People” must continue to protect the US Constitution for ourselves, our children and future generations who will follow in our footsteps in the centuries ahead.

And trust me - celebrating our nation's Constitution by reading it is much safer than making a birthday cake with 222 candles!

I was amazed this morning at one of the elementary schools I work at. They held an outside ceremony at the Flag pole to celebrate this occasion. There were students who did a skit about the Revolutionary War. Another class (2nd grade) sang the Star Spangled Banner. And, the most moving part was the recitation of the Pledge of Alliegence by the entire school right out in the open at a neighborhood school. The children recited the Pledge quite loudly (I nearly choked up). On Fox News yesterday they had some guy on who represted some agency that is bent on having a national law that would require all school districts/school sites to place in their student handbook information on how any student can opt out of reciting the Pledge. His reasoning was that they receive approximately 10 complaints each year about the recitation of the Pledge at public schools. These people need to go away.

Timely, So my daughter is practicing the preamble (with Feeling) for a class assignment while I just reading reading about the Obscenity Called Acorn here on FR and it’s direct connection to our president and I Phased into
A kind of WTH disconnected reality - A little patriotic moment superimposed over the reality of the present slime that our government has collapsed into. What a picture.

Every so-called "conservative" site in America needs to be absolutely flooded with recognition of this significant day and the Founders' own words as to what they meant by their Constitution.

Instead, those sites, just like their counterparts on the Far Left, are flooded with ACORN, Pelosi, and every other topic that adds nothing to an effort to stem the tide of tyranny that threatens future generations of Americans.

Issues are transient and fleeting. Principles are enduring and timeless and apply to all persons everywhere! America's Founders knew that and "capsulated" them into the most amazing document to preserve liberty ever known to man.

Celebrate their ideas! Recall them for your children and grandchildren.

Thanks for the reminder that September 17 is Constitution Day, every year, by proclamation of Congress.

The huge disconnect is that the same body, Congress, has desacrated the Constition time and time again with blatantly unconstitutional legislation. Some claim that about 80% of the massive US budget is devoted to matters which are outside the scope of the federal government's constitutional authority.

So the celebration is meaningless unless it is combined with an agenda geared toward reinvigorating the Constitution. That's the huge task in front of us.

If you look at the victories and failures of the civil rights movement and its litigation strategy in the court, I think where it succeeded was to invest formal rights in previously dispossessed people, so that now I would have the right to vote. But, the Supreme Court never ventured into the issues of redistribution of wealth, and of more basic issues such as political and economic justice in society. To that extent, as radical as I think people try to characterize the Warren Court, it wasn’t that radical. It didn’t break free from the essential constraints that were placed by the Founding Fathers in the Constitution, at least as it’s been interpreted, and the Warren Court interpreted in the same way, that generally the Constitution is a charter of negative liberties. Says what the states can’t do to you. Says what the federal government can’t do to you, but doesn’t say what the federal government or state government must do on your behalf.

And that hasn’t shifted and one of the, I think, tragedies of the civil rights movement was because the civil rights movement became so court-focused I think there was a tendency to lose track of the political and community organizing and activities on the ground that are able to put together the actual coalition of powers through which you bring about redistributive change. In some ways we still suffer from that.
