Skip to comments.California may pull plug on big TVs that guzzle energy

Reporting from Sacramento - Concerned that the growing popularity of big-screen televisions could make it harder for California to keep pace with electricity demand, state energy regulators are poised to crack down on energy-guzzling sets despite opposition from a powerful electronics trade group.
The first-in-the-nation TV efficiency standards would require electronics retailers to sell only energy-sipping models starting in 2011. Even tougher efficiency criteria would follow in 2013.
The California Energy Commission is slated to unveil the new standards today, followed by a 45-day public comment period. The commission is expected to approve the measure in early November.
The rules, which took more than a year to develop, are designed to shave $8.1 billion off Californians' electricity bills over a 10-year-period. That works out to $30 per set per year, according to commission officials.
It will also help California utilities head off the need to build more power plants just so residents can watch "American Idol" and other shows. TVs already account for 10% of residential energy use in California, driven largely by surging demand for large-screen TVs. Strict state mandates for cutting greenhouse gas emissions are further pressuring officials to act.
"Increased efficiency is the most cost-effective way of meeting our renewable-energy goals," commission Chairwoman Karen Douglas said.

So now I bet we’ll see a “Cash for Clunkers” program to get people to trade in their Plasma TVs.
We have plenty of energy. The eco-fascists and warmists won’t allow us to access it. The world is laughing at us.
Hey, CALI... here’s an idea....
BUILD A POWER PLANT!!
Jeez, what idiots.
Killing in-state electronics dealers so out of state retailers can make a bundle.
You can’t make this stuff up.
Best Buy stores on the California border have just hit the lottery.
“Increased efficiency through term limits is the most cost-effective way of meeting our renewable-politician goals,”.
California is finished.
...when they pry my remote from my cold, dead, fingers.
Just pull the plug on kalifornicate.
So just buy it on Amazon. No tax, and no “electronic waste recycling fee (tax)” either...
I think they should limit the size of houses and the number of tv sets you can have. Also reduce the size of refrigerators and ban the sale of dryers. The sun always shines here..hang out your laundry.
My Pioneer plasma HDTV has a much better picture than Samsung however they now rule the market.
The article does not mention CA pays some of the highest electricity prices in the nation and any sort of energy intensive manufacturing no longer exists in the state.
They’ll have to pry my 52” plasma remote from my cold, dead hand.
Great. Now I’m going to have to drive to Las Vegas and pay cash for my next big TeeeeeVeeeee. That will work until Obama gets his webcam based Big Brother is Watching You program into full swing.
Pretty soon they will be watching TV by candlelight just like people did in the 1930’s to watch FDR do his Fireside Chats.
The rest of the country
The inmates are running the insane asylum.
Why not shut down movie theaters with their costly, energy-sucking projectors, and global warming-inducing popcorn machines.
I thought they already passed that along with bans on black cars
T-bills for Tellys...
They coiuld use some of the Stimulus money to pay for the licensing of a new Nuke Plant! or Drill some Natural Gas off the Coast!
You can only wring so much efficiency from technology. Eventually you either have to build more power plants or reduce the number of people using electricity.
Judging from news articles like this, apparently Californias government has chosen the later. The legislature seems intent on driving the populace from the state.
Why don't they just shut down electricity to each house for one week a month. That should help them meet their goals.
Don’t forget the A/C. Obama better not try to turn off the air-conditioning in Texas. We have much of the Army down here and they would join us.
Increased efficiency is the most cost-effective way of meeting our renewable-energy goals,” commission Chairwoman Karen Douglas said.
NO IT ISN’T YOU DUMBASS!...BUILD NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS!
Well that would require too much g*damn common sense and foresight.
Ugh, this state is run by people who are probably legally retarded.
You jackasses will have to pry the big screen from my cold dead hands!....
There must be SOME tort attorney SOMEWHERE...if the legal profession is at all capable of justifying its existence in this country...that can figure out a way to prosecute for the material consequences of legislated stupidity and ignorance foisted upon....because in the absence of reasonable legal solutions and recourse....the only option becomes the Second Amendment option
We need an f’ing “Cash for Clunker Politicians” program!...This is rediculous!
If we grow our own corn, make alcohol from it, and use it to power our own generators, can we please Mr. Government man have the TV we want?
They have no understanding of economics. If they did, they would understand that electricity would be channeled to the people who value it most, and if people want to pay more for their TV to have power, they should be allowed to. That is efficient. If electricity gets scarce, its price will go up and only those who really want a big TV, and who are willing to pay the electricity, will have them.
Of course, if these people weren't fascists whose real purpose was to take big TVs away because they want to run everyone's lives and big TVs are owned only be people with money and we hate them, then what the government would be doing is building nuclear power plants, drilling for oil offshore, and growing the economy and supply so that the state could prosper. But prosperity is not the goal of these people.
There are four freaking conservatives in my district and I am one.
CA Politics SUCK. The redistricting killed us, and illegal immigration stabbed the stake into its heart. We tried with Arnold. We were pwned.
Have you tried watching one of the proposed TVs?
Best Buy stores on the California border have just hit the lottery.””
There is an inspection station at all California main roads incoming to the state for Animal/hay inspections.
They demand a health inspection of my horses, which must be no more than 30 days old, a Coggins certificate, which has to be current, and they can demand proof of ownership.
If not satisfied, they can fine me, turn me away, and/or impound my critters, truck & trailer.
Inspecting your vehicle for purchasing a large TV elsewhere would not be that difficult.
This is, of course, AFTER the Feds made us switch over to digital TV, and millions of NEW sets were sold, none of which were cheap.
While all of this discussion is happening, the enviros are still demanding that all dams in the Sierras be destroyed and let the streams flow. Lots of those dams produce electricity!! So simple.
That's a mighty big remote!
ban the sale of dryers. The sun always shines here..hang out your laundry.”
Home Owners Associations have rules against clotheslines.
“Why not shut down movie theaters?”.....
On no!...that will never happen!...You have to have a place to see all the crap whack left movies that Hollywierd makes!
Ugh, this state is run by people who are probably legally retarded.”
Amuse yourself and prove your point at the same time— do watch the California Legislature in Sacramento live & in person.
I see a big market for gas TV’s and microwaves!
Anyone with the money to buy a big screen TV has the money to leave that miserable, fascist state.
Rules like this are like a magic wand, turning Liberals into Conservatives with a swish and a flick.
"BUILD A POWER PLANT!!"
Can't do that cuz Al Gore tells us if we build another power plant the temperature will raise 1 billionth of a degree in the next 1000 years which will kill all the polar bears. So please send all you money to ALGOREWILLSAVETHEPLANET.com so he can become richer and save us all from ourselves!
Got mighty big hands
Probably be like watching a monkey sh*t fight...
Funny, a 52” LCD tv uses FAR, FAR less energy than a 20” tube tv. These people are complete and UTTER morons! What are they being paid to do again?
Oh yeah...shut off the water supply to farmers! That’s another smart move. Government is out of gone control!
I swear I will make a video called “government gone wild”!
That being said we cannot generate power for tv how the heck we suppose to power all these new electric cars?
Yeah, one that burns smelt would be good.
