California may pull plug on big TVs that guzzle energy
LA Times ^ | September 18, 2009 | Marc Lifsher

Posted on 09/18/2009 10:34:36 AM PDT by gubamyster

Reporting from Sacramento - Concerned that the growing popularity of big-screen televisions could make it harder for California to keep pace with electricity demand, state energy regulators are poised to crack down on energy-guzzling sets despite opposition from a powerful electronics trade group.

The first-in-the-nation TV efficiency standards would require electronics retailers to sell only energy-sipping models starting in 2011. Even tougher efficiency criteria would follow in 2013.

The California Energy Commission is slated to unveil the new standards today, followed by a 45-day public comment period. The commission is expected to approve the measure in early November.

The rules, which took more than a year to develop, are designed to shave $8.1 billion off Californians' electricity bills over a 10-year-period. That works out to $30 per set per year, according to commission officials.

It will also help California utilities head off the need to build more power plants just so residents can watch "American Idol" and other shows. TVs already account for 10% of residential energy use in California, driven largely by surging demand for large-screen TVs. Strict state mandates for cutting greenhouse gas emissions are further pressuring officials to act.

"Increased efficiency is the most cost-effective way of meeting our renewable-energy goals," commission Chairwoman Karen Douglas said.

I think they should limit the size of houses and the number of tv sets you can have. Also reduce the size of refrigerators and ban the sale of dryers. The sun always shines here..hang out your laundry.

Hybrid batteries and cheap LCD tv's are both made in South Korea.

My Pioneer plasma HDTV has a much better picture than Samsung however they now rule the market.

The Energy Commission's move is just the latest step in a long push for energy efficiency in California. Since 1975, the Golden State has led the nation in adopting tough energy standards for household appliances, homes and buildings. As a result, California's per-capita electricity consumption has remained flat for nearly three decades, while the rest of the country's power demand has grown 50%.

The article does not mention CA pays some of the highest electricity prices in the nation and any sort of energy intensive manufacturing no longer exists in the state.

When are the people of California going to wake up and elect sane government?

You can only wring so much efficiency from technology. Eventually you either have to build more power plants or reduce the number of people using electricity.

Judging from news articles like this, apparently California’s government has chosen the later. The legislature seems intent on driving the populace from the state.

Why don't they just shut down electricity to each house for one week a month. That should help them meet their goals.

There must be SOME tort attorney SOMEWHERE...if the legal profession is at all capable of justifying its existence in this country...that can figure out a way to prosecute for the material consequences of legislated stupidity and ignorance foisted upon....because in the absence of reasonable legal solutions and recourse....the only option becomes the Second Amendment option

What a bunch of fascists we have in government these days.

If we grow our own corn, make alcohol from it, and use it to power our own generators, can we please Mr. Government man have the TV we want?

They have no understanding of economics. If they did, they would understand that electricity would be channeled to the people who value it most, and if people want to pay more for their TV to have power, they should be allowed to. That is efficient. If electricity gets scarce, its price will go up and only those who really want a big TV, and who are willing to pay the electricity, will have them.

Of course, if these people weren't fascists whose real purpose was to take big TVs away because they want to run everyone's lives and big TVs are owned only be people with money and we hate them, then what the government would be doing is building nuclear power plants, drilling for oil offshore, and growing the economy and supply so that the state could prosper. But prosperity is not the goal of these people.

Best Buy stores on the California border have just hit the lottery.””
There is an inspection station at all California main roads incoming to the state for Animal/hay inspections.
They demand a health inspection of my horses, which must be no more than 30 days old, a Coggins certificate, which has to be current, and they can demand proof of ownership.
If not satisfied, they can fine me, turn me away, and/or impound my critters, truck & trailer.

Inspecting your vehicle for purchasing a large TV elsewhere would not be that difficult.

This is, of course, AFTER the Feds made us switch over to digital TV, and millions of NEW sets were sold, none of which were cheap.

While all of this discussion is happening, the enviros are still demanding that all dams in the Sierras be destroyed and let the streams flow. Lots of those dams produce electricity!! So simple.
