If anyone is interested in a terrific course on the Civil War and reconstruction you watch all of Dr. David Blights course from Yale online at http://academicearth.org/courses/the-civil-war-and-reconstruction-era-1845-1877
It is a great course, and he is good lecturer. The free academic resources available on line today are phenomenal, you just have to know where to find them.

One of the better lines from the movie “Good Will Hunting” was that you could get the equivalent of a Harvard education with a (free) library card. That is true as far as it goes—but only if you have the discipline and self-motivation. Only a very few people do. However, at the end of the day, you won’t get that all important piece of paper unless you fork over the $$.

Exactly. This is because there is no metric by which your studies and newfound knowledge can be measured. Degrees are conferred by the institution which means they reserve the right as to who they confer said degree.

I have taken all the Walter Lewin physics courses online and can say that he is a terrific teacher who simplifies an otherwise very complex subject.

Equivalency examinations do a fine job of measuring learning and knowledge just as do the Bar Exams and CPA Exams offered by states.

True, but they only examine a particular body of knowledge. I've taken them and support their use!

FUnny how nobody with a degree ever claims that. Most of us know that we COULD get such an education, but we WOULDN’T unless we had actual TEACHERS and they cost money.

I’m torn. I think the edifices of higher education should offer degree granting online courses. Anyone who can do the material ought to be able to receive the degree and the qualifications that will prove useful later on.

I love good will hunting and he was right. The real problem with a college education is who has the time to learn stuff? With all the busywork they have gets in the way of learning.
