Ohio Town Struggles After Package Giant DHL Leaves

WILMINGTON, Ohio (Reuters) – Unemployment in this small U.S. town has quadrupled in the past 16 months, but worse is to come as thousands of unemployed workers run out of severance money and benefits.

"Things are going to get tighter around here toward the end of the year," said David Raizk, mayor of this town of 12,000 in southwestern Ohio. "As benefits run out we're going to see a greater and greater dependence on the aid that's available."

In May 2008, before German shipping firm DHL Express, a unit of German post office operator Deutsche Post, said it was in talks to have rival UPS handle its U.S. operations, unemployment in Wilmington had long been below 3 percent.

But the local unemployment rate jumped over 14 percent in the wake of DHL's announcement last November that it would leave the U.S. domestic market altogether with the loss of 9,500 jobs, many of them in Wilmington.

The national unemployment rate was 9.4 percent in July, while Ohio's jobless rate was 11.2 percent. Officials in Wilmington are struggling to help the unemployed cope while remaining hopeful that the town will find a way to replace the thousands of mostly unskilled jobs that have been lost, mostly as a result of DHL's pullout.

"We have an opportunity to sell ourselves as a trained workforce," said Katy Farber, president of the Chamber of Commerce in neighboring Highland County. "Out of the ashes of all of this, we could see meaningful change."

Looks like Barry's plan is working - eliminate all private jobs.

Then everyone will have to depend on 'The State', just like it was in his beloved USSR.

It’s the economy stupid.

We need to post and repeat that everywhere.
It’s our only chance to defeat the Baraqqi coalition.

The Dominoes continue to fall. Some States may go under... and about 80% of the Stimulus is Unspent. How's that for "Hope" and "Change" Liberal's and Progressives.

Just great. Unemployment going on 12%, businesses leaving in droves (NCR just flew the coop from Dayton after 100+ years to head to the sunshine of Atlanta). Yet the Governor has no problem heading out of state on a regular basis to do fundraisers for Oscumbag. Ted Strickland is Odouchebag's Number One groupie.

here's another tidbit. Obama's DOE just turned down a loan guarantee application from USEC down in Piketon to build the next generation uranium enrichment plant to replace the one they shutdown in the same location a few years ago. Not a bailout, not even a loan, just a loan guarantee, something the taxpayers pay nothing for. Odumb$hit campaigned in the state and said he's support the loan guarantee if he were elected. He got elected, and now his DOE doesn't support it. Liar? I'd say so...

Well, at least he paid everyone's gas and rent like he promised.....

Liar? I'd say so...

You are only saying that because you're a racist.

Yep, I thought of that. And it did work for Clinton.
But I kind of prefer, "It's The Communism Stupid".

The sheeple voted for 'change'.
But that 'change' didn't include ripping up the Constitution, our Republic and replacing it with 'USSR v2.0'.

It's pretty stinky here in Hardin County, KY. A large portion of the local factories make parts for the auto industry and they have been having massive layoffs for the past year. Two years ago, plants like Dana, Techniglass, and Akabono were going three shifts a day, seven days a week; now they are doing two shifts, five days a week.

We are now sitting around 15% unemployment. But there is light at the end of the tunnel, in that the US Army's Human Resources Command is coming to Fort Knox next year and will be hiring almost 3,000 locals (about 1,300 of these positions will be filled by folks at the Armor School) but that is still about a year away.

I live in hamilton county. I lost my TV repair job last month—after nearly a YEAR of having to put up with late(by sometimes a MONTH) pay, no pay, liberal outbursts from my psycho boss, and slave—type treatment. They owe me about $7500, but I will probably NOT get ANY money—and my boss has so far, DENIED my unemploymet too. Right now..I am living off of my “rainy day fund” but that won’t last too long.

My sister lost her daycare job in June. she was supposed to get another one right after that—but it did not work out.

In Kettering, about 40 miles north of here, My best friend is having trouble making it too. She is a beautician—and lately—has NOT had much work, barely enough to break even a lot of the time. She often wants to do my hair for free—but I make her take a bit of money from me—since she NEEDS it. Her husband’s tool company is NOT making any money right now, either. And to top it all—ONE adult son had had to move BACK in with her, and her husband, as he was injured at work(back injury) and had been DENIED Workmen’s comp, and NOW—her OTHER son may ALSO have to move back in with her too...as she does NOT feel comfortable co-signing for an apartment for him at this time, as money is so tight, and she thinks he may have lost HIS job—but is not willing to tell her. .

Yeah...that “hope and change ‘ is sure working out for all of us. I mentioned “change” to her last week...and her reply was “yeah...change..my A$$!”

Welcome to the Obama depression. Unemployment is 13.9% in Vancouver, Washington. It’s 12.4% in Oregon. Only New York and other socialist parasite filled enclaves are partaking in the bail out feeding frenzy. I’m sure big parties were held in the Hampton’s all summer. Martha’s Vinyard, too.
