Boehner Says Democrat Health Care Plan is Dead
CNSnews ^ | September 20, 2009 | Terence P. Jeffrey

Posted on 09/20/2009 1:20:30 PM PDT by Jet Jaguar

House Minority Leader John Boehner (R.-Ohio) said today that the health-care plan that President Barack Obama is pushing in Congress is now dead and will not pass.

Boehner made the observation in an interview this morning on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” where he appeared after President Obama.

“There’s been no bipartisan conversation on Capitol Hill about health care,” Boehner said in an interview with "Meet the Press" host David Gregory. “At some point when these big government plans fail—and they will, the Congress will not pass this—it’s really time for the president to hit the reset button, just stop all of this and let’s sit down and start over in a bipartisan way to build a plan that Americans will support.”

“So you think the plan is dead?” asked Gregory.

“I think it is,” said Boehner.

Earlier in the program, President Obama had said that news coverage of the health care debate over the past week had been dominated not by “the sensible people” but by people stoking controversy.

In his own appearance, Boehner rejected the contention that the “tone” of the debate over health-care reform had gotten out of control, saying instead that it has been a “spirited” debate and that more Americans had been engaged in debating health-care reform than had been engaged in debating any issue in decades.

“I mean, let's face it,” Obama told host David Gregory. “If you look at the news cycle over the last--over the last week--you know, it—it--it hasn't been the--the sensible people who, you know, very deliberately talk about the important issues that we face as a country. That's not the folks who've gotten a lot of coverage.”

Later, Gregory asked Boehner about the “tone” of the debate

“I want to stay with this tone of the debate right now and whether or not you agree that by some of the things the president said in the course of that interview, he is trying to cool off the debate, the tone of the debate,” said Gregory. “Do you see it that way?”

“Well, I don’t know that the tone of the debate has gotten out of control,” said Boehner.

“You don’t think so?” asked Gregory.

“It’s been spirited, because we’re talking about an issue that affects every single American,” said Boehner. “And because it affects every American in a very personal way, more Americans have been engaged in this debate than any issue in decades. And so there’s room to work together. But I first believe that we’ve got to just take this big-government option, this big-government plan and move it to the side. Now, let’s talk about what we can do to make our current system work better. Then we’ll have some grounds on which to build.”

Boehner said the White House had not reached out at all to discuss health care reform with House Republicans. Then he said the plan the White House and congressional Democrats were pushing would not pass.

When “Meet the Press” host David Gregory asked Boehner if he thought that plan was dead, Boehner did not hesitate.

“I think it is,” he said.

I am unconvinced they will not use “reconciliation” to do it....whether it is do-able I dunno, but I think it will be tried, even if only as a desperate last resort

Dead in the Senate and House — 15 Dems against public option and 11 Dems against without public option. In the House: 44 Dems against public option and 71 against no public option.

Do the numbers — it is dead! That’s why ZERO was out on the airwaves today. Every day that goes by the numbers against Obamacare go up.

The Dem leadership I’ve seen lately, sound like they’re ready to ram this thing through by any method available. They are going to pass this thing, period. Boner is a MORON.

I’m hoping we have people ready to take this to the Supreme Court. Probably our only way of stopping this socialist takeover.

The DhimmiRats have the votes to pass any of this socialist drivel that they wish. NO true conservative should have anything to do with ANY of it. The American people must be reminded that this ALL belongs to the LibTards.

There is no need for bipartisanship in anti-Constitutional politics. There is only room for right and wrong.

Gregory asked Boehnner is he thought Obama was a socialist. Boehnner hemmed and hawed and avoided answering. I don’t understand why he can’t just say it. Clearly, Obama is AT LEAST a socialist. If you don’t wan’t to make headlines by using the label, at least say that his proposed policies are socialist on their face. I think that’s a winning issue for the GOP.

I don't understand the FRiends' comments. If popular leverage is moving against a stupid idea such as ObamaCare—and I believe it is—it's a good tactic to point this out. It frightens away the middle-ground, the waverers, from the stupid idea, since "everyone else" is defecting anyway. In this way, the prediction can become self-fulfilling.

I think Boehner made the Dems' and Obama's job harder and more costly by his comment. To paraphrase a well-known Democrat, the fact that Obama's medical-care takeover is in an aerodynamic stall constitutes a crisis that shouldn't go to waste.

Anything can happen in high-stakes poker like this, but I believe Boehner gave ObamaCare a helpful shove into a tailspin.

I wouldn’t put too much credence in what Boehner says. I think something will pass in a very bastardized form. It will also be so poorly-defined that the BHO administration and judges will be able to interpret it any way they want.

Outrageous. Now we’re not sensible people. His insults are just causing us to dig in our heels and oppose his every effort. This isn’t about healthcare anymore for many of us. It’s about an ideology we totally reject.

The more insults he throws at us the more likely there will be a bloodbath in 2010 regardless of whether this bill passes or not.

ZERO has no concrete plan—he hasn’t read what was drafted by, I assume, lobbyists. Half of Congress and the Senate don’t know the details. Like, the IRS in it. No one asks them (media) very specific questions on each item....now that would be a hoot to watch all the stammers and stutters then.

I'm starting to think he is right. After Obama’s big speech and health care drive, did all the democrats line up to push health care? Nope, they found anything they could to put off the issue, Joe Wilson, votes on cutting funding to ACORN, whatever it took. When Baucus came out with his bill, the silence from democrats was deafening, if it wasn't for republicans trashing it, their would have almost no talk of health care at all. The only other thing I can think, is that they are trying to wait until the holidays in the hope that people aren't paying as much attention, I.E. Obama’s health care by Christmas deadline.

Obama may figure “get it passed, even by means of ‘reconciliation,’ even if lots of Democrats lose their seats in 2010.” Even if they lost control of the House (the chances that the Democrats could lose the Senate too are still pretty slim), if the law was on the books it would be very hard for the next Congress to reverse it—and Obama could always veto a repeal. Why should Obama care if individual Congressional Democrats lose their seats? He’d have his healthcare legacy—it’s all about him.

Not if the women are Olympia Snowe and Kay Bailey Hutchinson.

I think the men have to find or grow some kahones and get out there and fight this socialist tide. As much as I like Palin, I didn’t think she should have quit (yes I know it stopped the attacks) but the point is leaders have to take the slings and arrows and that’s why we’re disappointed with the guys, but THEY are STILL THERE, they didn’t quit.

You don’t quit early when you don’t have to. You stay in the game. Men don’t have the luxury of quitting when it gets tough. We call them wimps even when they stay in the game but don’t do much. You think we’re going to praise them if they quit?

That's precisely my admittedly-extremely-cynical point. Dhimmicrats will break any rule, change any rule, create any rule that benefits them. They are completely brazen & shameless about it because the Tingly Media BobbleHeads approves and even touts it as "Hope & Change."

As Exhibit A, I give you the disgrace in Massachusetts to replace Kennedy. Why does Patrick beat around the bush? Just cite International Law or something and APPOINT a Democrat Senator for life.

In the end, Tradition, Manners, Respect, Adult Behavior, Responsibility, and Accountability are all concepts long-lost on Dhimmicrats. Republicans aren't much better when they're in power, but at the bare minimum, most GOP'ers love their country.
