A senior Islamist leader and ally of al Qaeda has called for additional suicide attacks against African Union peacekeepers operating in Mogadishu.
Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys, the leader of Hizbul Islam, or the Party of God, called for more suicide attacks during a sermon in the town of Elashabiyah, just outside Mogadishu.
"I also call upon the people to carry out more attacks against the African forces; they came to Somalia to assist our enemy, kill them ... in any way possible and use suicide attacks to kill them," Aweys told the crowd, according to a report in the Pretoria News.
Awey's remarks occurred just days after Shabaab suicide bombers penetrated security at an African Union base in Mogadishu and killed 21 people, including the deputy African Union commander and 16 other peacekeepers. The suicide bombers used United Nations vehicles to pass through the checkpoint and enter the compound.
In the fall of 2006, Aweys and Sheikh Sharif Ahmed, the current president of Somalia, started using suicide bombers against the Transitional Federal Government and Ethiopian troops operating in the country. Aweys and Sharif, the co-leaders of the Islamic Courts, took control of southern Somalia but were ousted during an Ethiopian offensive in late 2006.
Shabaab and its predecessor organization, the Islamic Courts, have conducted 18 suicide attacks since September 2006, when the first suicide attack was recorded in Somalia [see list below]. Over the past 12 months, Shabaab has conducted two effective suicide attacks: the June 18 strike outside a hotel in Beletwein that killed the security minister, a former ambassador, and 33 others; and the Oct. 29, 2008, strikes against government installations and a UN headquarters in the semi-autonomous regions of Somaliland and Puntland that resulted in the deaths of 28 Somalis.
Aweys has sought to merge Hizbul Islam with Shabaab.

SNIPPET: “The two main Islamist terror groups battling the weak Somali government may merge into a single outfit.
Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys, the leader of Hizbul Islam or the Party of Islam, said he is working to unite his faction with Shabaab, an al Qaeda-backed Islamic terror group that has lobbied to join the international terrorist organization. Aweys said talks were proceeding and urged followers to continue to fight until they achieve “victory over enemies” of Islam.””
SNIPPET: “Al Qaeda has increasingly focused on Somalia as being a major theater in their efforts to drive the West from African, the Middle East, and Asia. Osama bin Laden and Ayman al Zawahiri, al Qaeda’s second in command, have included Somalia in their propaganda tapes. Both leaders have urged Somali terrorist to continue the fight.”
SNIPPET: “Shabaab’s offer to officially join al Qaeda was warmly received by bin Laden and Zawahiri. The two groups have yet to merge but maintain close operational and financial ties.”

“Somali jihad leader defends attacks on African Union troops: “The Islamic religion permits such kinds of attacks if they are against known enemies and in the defense of the religion””
(September 21, 2009)
SNIPPET: “But remember, to believe this conflict has anything to do with Islamic teachings on jihadist warfare or the ideology that drives it would just be downright Islamophobic. “Radical Somali leader defends peacekeepers’ killings,” from CNN, September 20:
(CNN) — A radical Islamist leader in Somalia said Sunday that a suicide attack that killed 21 African Union peacekeepers was the right thing to do.
Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys said Thursday’s attack was meant to defend Islam.
“The Islamic religion permits such kinds of attacks if they are against known enemies and in the defense of the religion, but there are people who distort that explanation,” Aweys said, addressing hundreds of people during a religious sermon at Elashabiyaha, a suburb of Mogadishu.
He beat the apologists to the punch on that one.
Suicide bombers, disguised in two U.N.-marked vehicles, rammed through the security gate of the mission’s headquarters, which is attached to Mogadishu’s airport.
They detonated explosives just as Somalia’s transitional government and mission representatives concluded a high-level meeting inside the compound, said Nicolas Bwakira, the African Union’s special representative for Somalia.”
Why is HE still alive? Lead by example Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys!

Seems to me if these gasbag islamic clerics are so damned certain of the glorious eternity that awaits them in exchange for martyrdom, they would be the FIRST to put on the suicide bomb vests, or climb into the explosives loaded motor vehicles and head off to their 72 virgins...
But, of course, that ain’t gonna happen, is it? Somebody has to stay back here to ‘encourage’ the believers to do the same.
Islam is a cancer on humanity.
Britain withdrew from British Somaliland in 1960 to allow its protectorate to join with Italian Somaliland and form the new nation of Somalia.
Now THAT worked out really well, didn't it. /s
