The average person doesn't associate coolness with the sun.
The sun releases energy through deep nuclear fusion reactions in its core and has surface temperatures as hot as 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit, according to NASA's Web site.
Not cool at all.
But the sun's recent activity, or lack thereof, may be linked to the pleasant summer temperatures the midwest has enjoyed this year, said Charlie Perry, a research hydrologist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Lawrence.
The sun is at a low point of a deep solar minimum in which there are little to no sunspots on its surface.

Gee! Could that have something to do with it?(sheesh)

Pleasant my a$$. This summer sucked in the Midwest. Cold and rainy.

There is a sunspot forming on the far side of the sun which should become apparent on the Eastern limb of the sun after the 21st. This might herald the new cycle which is overdue.

There is a single (potential) spot found by resonsce images on the BACK side of the sun that “might” still be visible as the sun rotates around.
It’s NOT a confirmed spot yet because we can’t see it - it’s only a magnetic discrepancy right now, but it will probably become a visible spot. One of the first visible since mid-February to the naked eye.

...and when tomatoes can be grown in open sun without some shade and protection, in the midwest, things are not quite normal. This area had the coldest wettest june on record, and a pretty cool august without a single 100 plus degree day, much less any nineties to speak of.
...and finally the GW nutcases have shut up, all except the government, who appear to be a day late to discover their error, but are not willing it seems to be a dollar short.

Would hardly call it a *pleasant summer temperatures* when the furnace kept kicking on. In July. If Chicago, Washington DC, New York City and Boston where to have one or more devastating cold winters with brutal temperatures and deep snow would it change the tone of the politicians?
I doubt it!

This might herald the new cycle which is overdue. yeah....but there was a paper in an astrophysics journal last month that analyzed the magnetic field from this sunspot....the author postulated that the sunspot was either a remnant of the 24th cycle or the 25 cycle was entierly skipped and was the start of the 26th cycle.
Each cycle has different magnetic field orientation.
in any case...

What does the Farmer’s Almanac have to say? Last winter was no picnic here. If I hadn’t gotten a four wheeler and a snow blade, I’m not sure I would have survived the snow removal.
Western South Dakota is not really snow country. With barely fourteen inches of moisture a year.

Looks like I picked the wrong time to become an amateur radio operator. In the year I have been a ham there has been about 2 sunspots. We need sunspots to make the best bands work well, I could be talking around the world, but no....
(The hobby is still quite fun, though. I can talk to Europe just fine at times, but not any further until we get them sunspots)

Farmers’ Almanac predicts numbing cold this winter

Note:
The almanac’s forecast, however, is at odds with the National Weather Service, which is calling for warmer-than-normal temperatures across much of the country because of an El Nino system in the tropical Pacific Ocean, said Mike Halpert, deputy director of the NOAA Climate Prediction Center in Camp Springs, Md.

"nutcases have shut up"
Not my local lib rag, The Lacrosse (Wis), Tribune They had a frontpage story this morning headlined "Goodbye winter." The article reported on climate "experts" in Wisconsin who predicted much warmer temps. Of course there were no accompanying quotes from climate-warming dissenters. As usual. In fact, I'd say many warmists seem oblivious to all the dissent going on around them. And the evidence.

Acording to the latest Unisys water temps map, El Nino is breaking down. We now have a couple of spots of water located off the NorthWestern South American coast that are actually colder then normal (-0.355 C for one). The AGW proponents are gonna have to be dragged kicking and screaming to that realization.

Probably right, I’ve just been hoodwinked by all the health care nonsense. One need only look at the business going on in the San Joaquin Valley to know it ain’t over.

A pretty balanced article, but of course they throw in a Geologist who “studies atmospheric science” and is a Globull Warming adherent who refuses to let go of his pet theory (CO2) and then refers us to the IPCC and Wikipedia for unbiased information.

To: outofsalt
One sunspot does not a cycle make. We went 60 days (5th longest period on record without one, then had 1 spot for a day or two, then went another 19 days without one before this baby makes it's appearance. Check out this graph to see just how many spotless days this cycle is having compared to the last cycle.
Zero Sunspot Days by Month Comparison with last Cycle
It's too early to tell for sure but it's looking like this cycle could be comparable to some very severe minimums in the past...

Since you didn't have any sunglasses then you should have waited till night time.....
I remember years ago when the director of Poland's space program announced they were going to send a manned expedition to the sun.
When told that the space craft would likely burn up before it reached there, he replied that they have solved that problem. They were going to go at night......
