Ambulances race to Byrd's home By: Manu Raju September 22, 2009 10:16 AM EST

Ambulances and fire trucks were dispatched to the Northern Virginia home of Sen. Robert Byrd Tuesday morning.

A neighbor of the 91-year-old West Virginia Democrat said several ambulances were outside his residence in McLean, Va., and a Byrd spokesman said the senator suffered a fall in his home. An officer at the McLean Fire Department said that a unit was dispatched at 9:10 to the address where Byrd lives, but he declined to comment on the substance of the response.

Byrd – the longest-serving senator in the nation’s history – has been absent from the Senate for much of the year and has been in and out of the hospital battling various ailments.

“Byrd apparently stood up too fast this morning in his home and fell down,” said Jesse Jacobs, a spokesman for the senator. “To err on the side of caution his caregiver called an ambulance. He was taken to the hospital where he is currently being checked out. At this point in time there is no indication that he will be admitted.”

On the plus side for him...the hospital is sure to have a large supply of white sheets.

Eh, Byrd’s a tough old sonofagun. It really is time for him to accept a well-deserved retirement back home to West Virginia, though. There’s a point at which it’s just pointless for him to still be in the Senate, as many votes as he’s missing and as sick as he’s been. And it’s not even a partisan thing—I thought the same thing about Strom Thurmond in his last term, and I’m a huge Strom fan. Like somebody upthread said, right now, West Virginia’s only got one Senator, it’s Byrd’s staffers and office people that are doing all his work.

“Ambulances RACE to Byrd’s home.”

Does everything have to be about “race”?

How the hell does this guy get re-elected?

Here's one reason... Robert Byrd Hwy, "Corridor H". He's a master of bringing OPM" to WV. Virgina has refused to provide a link from 66, due to Winchester and Front Royal lobby efforts. But, once you get over the first mountain at the WV line on 55, you come through the George Washington National Forest, on down a winding two-lane, and enter Wardensville, which does have a 7-11 where you can buy Jack Daniels, Couvoisier, Cheese Doodles, and a Slurpee. From there, you drive west at 65 on a 4 lane, until it stops at Moorefield near the WalMart... It's still "under construction", for about ten years now! It's planned to eventually connect east WV with Charleston by 4-lane. You can't get there right now, except of Rt. 50 w..

My husband said he was sure that the last time they wheeled him into Congress in a wheelchair that he actually was either dead...or they left the machines outside the door just long enough for him to show up to vote.

Byrd – the longest-serving senator in the nation’s history – has been absent from the Senate for much of the year...

This is what royalty, organized crime bosses, and inept public school teachers do. They hang on to the office, even though they aren't in office. If Byrd can't come to work after a reasonable amount of time, he should be 'stepped' down. Senate seats were not designed to be life-long positions.

Here in Georgia, at least in my county, they send cops, ambulence, fire etc for any emergency call.

I’ve always imagined that while they’re all standing around deciding what to do for the cat stuck up your tree, the other side of town could be being pillaged and burned to the ground.

“To err on the side of caution his caregiver called an ambulance.

If he needs a caregiver he needs to resign from the Senate. He is clearly not capable of doing his job.
