Ambulances race to Byrd's home By: Manu Raju September 22, 2009 10:16 AM EST

Ambulances and fire trucks were dispatched to the Northern Virginia home of Sen. Robert Byrd Tuesday morning.

A neighbor of the 91-year-old West Virginia Democrat said several ambulances were outside his residence in McLean, Va., and a Byrd spokesman said the senator suffered a fall in his home. An officer at the McLean Fire Department said that a unit was dispatched at 9:10 to the address where Byrd lives, but he declined to comment on the substance of the response.

Byrd – the longest-serving senator in the nation’s history – has been absent from the Senate for much of the year and has been in and out of the hospital battling various ailments.

“Byrd apparently stood up too fast this morning in his home and fell down,” said Jesse Jacobs, a spokesman for the senator. “To err on the side of caution his caregiver called an ambulance. He was taken to the hospital where he is currently being checked out. At this point in time there is no indication that he will be admitted.”

Now if this accident had occurred to Senator Byrd while he was actually home in West Virginia, he could have been rescued by the Robert F Byrd Emergency Response Team, assisted by the Robert F Byrd Volunteer Fire Department, and if necessary, taken to the local Robert F Byrd Memorial Hospital and Convalescence Center where he could have received superior care in the special Robert F Byrd Recovery Wing.

Here’s hoping the ol’ buzzard pulls through ok.

Ambulances racing to his home? Competition to see who gets to take him on his final ride?

Even though the armed forces were then segregated, Byrd was a World War II draft dodger:
“I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side... Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.”

Good thing 0bama isn't the 'blackest specimen', that would have killed Senator Kleagle, ya know? ;)

WVA will be voting for Byrd 15 years after he’s gone. Everything in the state is named after him, but the state. He’s responsible for more federal jobs in WVA than any 10 presidents

Several Freepers on this thread have likened the racist pork hog to a Constitutional patriot. I wonder what's Constitutional about enormous amounts of pork?

That is the holy grail of racist Democrat quotes.

Having worked in a large hospital's ER for 20+ years I can assure you that 90 year olds hospitalized after a fall usually don't leave the hospital alive. So how are Senate vacancies filled in WV?

Or,better still,he'll hang on...in the hospital...for the next 3 months or so.

After all this graft, he still doesn’t own his own ambulance?

He’ll meet Kennedy, and then Johnson, and then the other Kennedy, and then the other Kennedy. . .

You can look up information about the training and curriculum for EMT-Basic providers; it’s probably much more extensive than you think.

An EMT-B course involves more than a hundred classroom hours covering a broad range of subjects, with much attention given to patient assessment. Granted, EMT-B’s are not doctors, but there are a number of interventions they are qualified to perform in the field besides taking someone’s blood pressure.

EMT classifications continue up to EMT-P, commonly referred to as a paramedic. Much of the advanced training received by paramedics covers pharmacology and cardiac care, but the basics are identical.

In Fairfax County, where this occurred, all firefighters are at least certified EMT-B. Each of the 37 stations has an ambulance staffed with a paramedic at all times.

Well, good for him; but, otherwise, his being recognized as our top elected scholar of the Constitution is something I laugh at. It’s time for the convening of one of the “O’s” death panels in the case of the “Dean of the Senate”-it’s going to cost too much in taxpayer dollars to keep him alive.

Might cost more if he's replaced by someone young and vigorous enough to actually show up and vote! ;-)

“Did he injure himself putting on his Grand Kleagle outfit?”

May have poked himself in the eye with the pointy end of the sheet.

Going to be hard for the people of WV to honor him after he’s gone because it will be next to impossible to find anything in the state without his name already on it.

What is it with Byrd and his friends as every time they make a wooden lower case “t” it bursts into flames?

I took an EMT class here in San Diego. The range of the abilities of an EMT are very limited here(due to lawsuits).

It is not a requirement to have a fire fighter rated as an EMT. I think there are only two stations here that don’t require it. But you are pretty much guranteed a job if you get your paramedic rating. They are in extremely high demand here.

Read the Washington Post article by Pianin, dated June 19, 2005 - It’s called “A Senator’s Shame.” It has the excerpts from a blatantly racist letter Byrd wrote. He gets the media pass, but Strom Thurmond and Trent Lott get the finger. A shadowy government agency, the “OSI” tracked the KKK thoroughly and amassed a startling dossier. Learn more about the OSI here: http://thebloviatinghammerhead.wordpress.com
