Condi: The should-be face of the GOP
Fortune ^ | September 22, 2009 | Nina Easton

She's smart. She's experienced. She's worldly. Republican strategists worried about their party's future should take heed. ___ Successful candidates follow a simple fundamental rule: Define yourself before your opponent can define you. The Republican Party, which mustered a thumbs-up from only 38% of voters in last week's Bloomberg poll, sorely needs to brush up on the very rule it counsels in candidate-training sessions.

To skeptics in search of a political home, the GOP's image has devolved into that of a minority collection of name-calling, "no"-saying, backward-looking, talk-show bullying cranks -- a definition gleefully perpetuated by Democratic pols. So next time the eloquent and elegant figure of Condoleezza Rice strides onto a stage, GOP strategists worried about their party's future should pull out their notebooks.

I interviewed Rice onstage last week on the closing day of Fortune's Most Powerful Women's Summit, where she achieved a star-turn -- and did so while mounting a vigorous defense of former President Bush's oft-vilified foreign policy, and delivering a pointed critique of President Obama and congressional Democrats.

"It's that simple," she declared, "if you want another terrorist attack in the U.S., abandon Afghanistan."

Condi Rice has always firmly rejected suggestions that she run for office. Her putative reason is a dislike of campaigning and campaign politics. I see no good reason to disbelieve her or to think that she will change her mind.

She didn’t “step back”, she stuck to her job, which was to keep the President informed, and then carry out his policy decisions. We don’t need a Secretary of State or National Security Adviser who’s battling the President. She’d be a lot more aggressive if she was President.

Condi Rice is an anti-Israel fanatic. I had quite enough of her under W.

Condi should run for Congress or Senate. Alabama? Californika? Wherever.

Then we can decide if she is 100% or 80% or just 50% with us. While she was in foreign policy she had to bite her tongue on domestic issues.

In IL O’Malley was the perfect conservative for Gov. An activist posted to the internet that she disagreed with O’Malley on abortion but would support O’Malley because they agreed on guns, taxes, spending and especially anti-corruption.

A prominent O’Malley supporter posted back that nobody could support O’Malley unless they were 100% pro-life no exceptions.

The fact is that most voters are neither conservative nor liberal. They are non-ideological. To win, we need those voters who vote based on looks and issues other than our single issue.

White men need not apply. /s

I like Condi but, I think we have moved on from calling for her leadership. Not that she is not good and damn smart to boot but, there must be better choices.

Besides, I understood her to want to have a major role in Professional Football on the order of a Bud Selig type.

What is the name of that guy out here in CA? I haven’t heard much from him lately.

Thought he was a rather smart fellow.

We don’t need RINO Condi-ments to spice up the GOP.

Man this is a tough crowd. I watched the video (I recommend it)and was impressed with Dr. Rice’s comments. She is not a politician. Never has been. She’s a passionate, effective advocate of the ideals of America and capitalism. She’s not ‘the face of the GOP’ but in a two party system, I’m proud to be able to say that Condi belongs to the same party as I do.

She was marginally better than Colin Powell who sought to undermine our positions because he thought he was so much smarter than everyone.

She at least didn't do us any harm, unlike Colin, and took orders real well, which may have been the problem.

An SOS has to have a certain amount of self thought and interest.

Where is Madeofthin Allblight? Now there was a winner. Though I keep hearing about a certain and total failure, as SUCKofState, Brezynski. He spawned a real hazard and proof that sometimes surgery to reconnect a brain stem is an abject failure, doomed from the start.

Mediocre, at best, Secretary of State who would not be pushed by many on FR if she wasn’t swarthy. Should have stayed in academia, much like Brzezinski.
