(SPRINGFIELD, Mass.) — A former postal service employee has pleaded guilty to stealing more than 30,000 DVDs that moved through a western Massachusetts post office...

Federal prosecutors say the movie rental company alerted Springfield post office officials that a suspiciously high number of DVDs were disappearing. As many as 100 movies a week were disappearing.

Weathers was arrested in February 2008 after investigators filmed him taking DVDs from packages and slipping them into his backpack.

He faces 10 months to 16 months in prison and restitution costs of about $38,000 at his Dec. 23 sentencing....

He faces 10 months to 16 months in prison

I wonder if they'd consider house arrest, y'know, so he could get to watching the movies.

Can I put that movie on my NetFlix list?

At 100 minutes per movie, it would take almost 5 years to watch them all non-stop.

A bit over $1.00 per movie? Seems way too low.

When we were in Michigan, our son’s Netflick account was closed because we were not receiving the disks. Several times we received an empty envelope. We contacted the postal service a couple of times about it. Good to hear he was caught.

Obama to America:

You put up with crappy service from the Post Office.

You wait in line forever to be treated rudely at the DMV.

You tolerate being harassed by the IRS for taking legitimate deductions while top government officials get a wink and a nod for blatant tax fraud.

You put up with government intruding in your life while taking your hard earned money and abusing you at every turn.

So why don’t you like my health care plan? It’s just more of what you are already putting up with.

I think they recovered the movies, the “cost” was in lowering the available supply by taking them out of circulation until his arrest and their recovery (unless they are still being held as evidence).

Afterall, he steals, lies, cheats and steals some more.

The jokes about him working for Obama would be funny if they weren't so true.

Let’s see if I have this correct...

Copy ONE movie and it’s 5 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Steal 30,000 movies and it 10-16 months and $38,000 in fines.

Yep, I guess that makes sense in MA and DC! Hmmmm.....

I had problems with Netflix disks skipping etc with my old DVD player; expensive several years ago (several hundred five disk changer stereo surround sound, etc).

I bought a new $50 player a year ago and it will play any disk with absolutely no problems.

Maybe it is the ‘Russian engineering’ principle, the more low tech it is the better it actually works. ;)

There is a verrrrrrrrrrrry distinct reason for that.

If this postal criminal was white, his photo would be on every website featuring the story.

But, because he is not white, there will be no posted photo of him.

Let me know how it works out.

I think my $50 unit IS a Sony, the crappy 5 disk changer one was a Samsung.

The Samsung not only liked to skip on even NEW disks, but it was sooooooo slow. It wanted to THINK about everything. I don’t want my DVD player to think about anything, I want it to apply lazer to disk!

Sony deliberately cripples their machines. They are so worried about piracy that they peddle defective players “just in case”. I have new from the store discs that won’t play on the Sony or Magnavox players. I have 7 DVD players and rest play them.

Its really hit and miss. They play some discs but not others and seem to have more problems halfway through movies also. Needless to say, I rarely use the Magnavox or Sony anymore. Magnavox is actually the worst of the bunch. It will play a movie once sometimes and then never again. Some movies will play fine. I quit trying to figure it out. And everyone I know with Magnavox has these issues.

When I send my nieces and nephews cards I always write “enjoy the $100!” Then I lick it and seal it. Then I rip it open and close it back up with tape. That way it looks like someone stole the $100 but I still get the credit.

It sounds like a postal carrier pseudonym. (miles, all kinds of weather?) Eh, nope. It appears to be his actual name.

I'm surprised it took Netflix so long to realize their loss. Customers must have been going crazy with penalties for unreturned discs and not being able to order new ones.

The only time I had a Netflix video disappear was when I dropped it off at the local post office.

I suspected it had been stolen, and never did that again.

Netflix is good about forgiving a few missing DVDs, luckily.

Maybe it is the ‘Russian engineering’ principle, the more low tech it is the better it actually works. ;)

I bought a $450 Toshiba DVD player eleven years ago (got a free Titanic VHS with it). It's still running but won't play some discs. It is, however, fairly good about playing scratched discs if they are clean.

I bought a $40 Phillips from wally world a year and a half ago and it has no problems at all, and will play the relative few discs that won't in the other.

My 5 DVD Magnavox would not play DVD’s unless the were perfect. It was so frustrating but I could tell it had a lot to do with the laser being dirty. I tried one of those CD’s with the cleaning brushes. Still would not work, finally I took the the stupid thing apart and reached way in there and cleaned it by hand. Just like that it started working again. Unfortunate I have to repeat it about every three mouths. It will be my last Magnavox!

Those cheap DVD players are amazingly good at doing what the expensive ones will not, playing disks with normal wear and tear.
