JERUSALEM (Reuters) - A cloud of pessimism is suffocating hopes that U.S. President Barack Obama can pull off a miracle in the Middle East by setting negotiations on course for rapid progress towards a comprehensive peace agreement.

The New York encounter he arranged between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas this week produced no more than a schedule of lower-level meetings this week and next, which has only deepened scepticism.

I would think it would be extremely difficult for Israel to take any of this seriously when they know the Palestinians and Lebanon are fully restocked and ready to go the second Iran gives the go ahead.

Obama is the least effective president for foreign policy in history. He will soon surpass Carter in severe damage done. The ripple effects of the four short years of Carter are still being felt to this day. I expect we’ll be saying the same thing in 30 years about Obama.

No Duh. Issue a stern warning in the press. Send a couple of old radicals to a meeting with a bag of money for the Palestinians and expect to spread the love. That hasn’t worked since Jimma Carter screwed the pooch and got a couple of leaders assassinated.

No kidding. Why not have Congress rush thru a bill that "solves" the ME problem once & for all.

And remember, you can sign it, but you can't read it.

I think it's fair to say that not everyone bought the Hope and Change thing, and aren't surprised at all that Obama's intervention hasn't accomplished much. It's a shame he's made things worse, neither side trusts him or his teleprompter now.

Zero would love to give the crazies access to Israel again so they can start murdering women and children. Wifey (Jewish) has a cousin in Israel who has barely missed twice - she missed flight 800 (which we know was hit by a missile) and had to take the next flight on her way to see us in NY, and the bus she usually took was blown to bits. They live in a walled compound, with underground access, guards, and parking.

No, this is a wall around their town. They still worry about snipers and mortars.
