Fish Vs. Farmers

Delta smelts: Preferred over humans.

Delta smelts: Preferred over humans.

Environmentalism: Sen. Dianne Feinstein votes to deny water to California's drought-stricken San Joaquin Valley. Farmers, families and food are being held hostage to an endangered fish called the delta smelt.

There was a time when the San Joaquin Valley was the most productive agricultural region in the world. It was a large part of what made the Golden State golden.

Now it's a place where farmers no longer farm, but instead line up at food banks to feed the families of those who once fed the rest of the country and a good chunk of the world.

The largest man-made agricultural disaster since the Dust Bowl of the 1930s is unfolding in the valley due to yet another attempt to protect a fish declared to be threatened under the Endangered Species Act. This damage is being done to protect the hypomesus transpacificus, otherwise known as the delta smelt.

Last December the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, in its finite wisdom, issued something called a biological opinion imposing water restrictions on the San Joaquin Valley and surrounding areas to protect the habitat of this tiny fish. The authorities forget the species homo sapiens, also part of the ecosystem, is threatened.

Its habitat is being destroyed — by government edict.

To protect the smelt, billions of gallons of water from the mountains east and north of Sacramento have been channeled away from farms and into the ocean, while farmers watched their crops wither and their once-productive land become barren.

This is 2009, we shouldn’t have to choose between fish & farmers.

Democrats are afraid of science & technology.

As many have said, Al Qaeda couldn’t have hit our farmers harder than some in Washington have!

CA voted for Obummer, the Marxist now posing as a Fascist, Pelosi, Feinstine, Waxman, etc.

They deserve it.

This not only means ruin for the farmers, but it is also a huge loss in income for the state.

So CA and the stupid EPA are burying CA in a financial morass.

We need to destroy the EPA.

No, San Francisco, San Diego and L.A. voted for Obama, the rest of the Sate is red, including the Valley that is being punished by this..

You should look up the red/blue California map before you foist your wrath on these people.

Fish Vs. Farmers

This can't be an actual question, right?

People don't need to think about this for more than a moment to know the answer, right?

The world has gone mad.

“...the water diversion that was doing damage to the region, harming both smelt and salmon.”

Wild salmon are dying in Scandinavia, the UK and the US because of proximity to fish farms from which they contract parasites. It’s happening all over. [Therefore the water was not diverted to save the salmon.]

There have been 15 non-native species introduced into those waterways over the years. The Delta smelt is probably no longer a “native species” but has been crossed with an introduced Japanese fish. [Therefore the water was not diverted to save a “species.” (Note DNA demonstrated the Spotted Owl was not a species but a sub-species not covered by the rules).]

Cities in the area dump raw sewage into the water. [Therefore the dying fish could have been the result of the polluted water and not the pumps as alleged]

Water in California has been a political issue for many years.

Money on it: they will drive out the small farmers & the land will be bought by giant corporations who will farm it.

Pay attention. Groceries will go up for everybody around the country. Take notice that much of the produce around the country will be from foreign countries.

This is a very revealing issue.

I’m in agreement with you Jeff. The California people need to stop listening to suits telling them they can’t have water and turn the damned water on themselves.

Even Huell Howser (everyone in California knows Huell Howser) did a show on the manufactured crisis entitle “Water crisis.” It is available on YouTube.
