John Podesta compared the nations current budget crisis to the situation former President Bill Clinton faced in 1993 and said some form of a value-added tax is more plausible today than it ever has been.
Theres going to have to be revenue in this budget, said Podesta, Clintons former chief of staff and co-chairman of President Barack Obamas transition team, said in an interview on Bloomberg Televisions Political Capital with Al Hunt, airing today.

The virtual Galt’s Gulch is going to trip them up BIGTIME.
He’s got a funny spin. I would say instead that a Republican majority is more plausible.
Hey Podesta!
Taxes KILL productivity!!!!!!
But then, destroying American industry and busines IS your objective......
I stand amazed. Thank God (I mean no Blasphemy in that) that Peter Shiff is running. He could change the whole debate.
Go for it. Another broken promise by the (conceited) ONE ... the one about no taxes on the middle class ... can only help us.
Do it before 2010, please.
With a sales tax of 10% in CA..any federal value added tax would hit like a bomb, even with their loyal Rat base.
They wont even pay for their healthcare they want so much.
Liberals are all and only about a free lunch.
Seriously...
Governments love VAT. Businesses collect it for them and of course the rate is so easy to change (always upwards).
In the UK it’s around 17% now, in France 19% (my figures may be out of date but if so they’re likely on the low side).
Podesta is a no good stinking marxist. He is left of Lenin. He is a mean-spirited, vile, hateful, gutter snipe. Everything he supports is all about tearing this great country down. He is venomous, destructive, and a douche bag. Other than that, he is an okay guy.
National Sales Tax to be added on top of huge state, county and or city sales taxes.
Thanks a bunch J. Podman. You brighten our lives so much...not. I can’t decide if I despise Clintanoids like Podesta,Lindsey, Berger, Reno, Holder, Albright, etc. more for being crooks or for bringing misery to all but their inner circle.
Now it looks like their wet dream just might come true! Another large permanent tax. Oh joy, Oh bliss.
This one I don't think they can sell.
John Podesta is the President and CEO of the *Center for American Progress. Under his leadership, the Center has become a notable leader in the development of and advocacy for progressive policy.
*a liberal think tank in Washington, D.C
Podesta worked as a trial attorney in the Department of Justice’s Honors Program in the Land and Natural Resources Division (19761977), and as a Special Assistant to the Director of ACTION, the federal volunteer agency, (19781979).
Podesta held a number of positions on Capitol Hill, including: Counselor to Democratic Leader Senator Thomas Daschle (19951996)
In addition, in 1988, Podesta founded with his brother Tony, Podesta Associates, Inc., a Washington, D.C. “government relations and public affairs” lobbying firm.
He had a key role in introducing *Executive Order 12958 and also oversaw Clinton’s pardons in the last days of his administration.
*an unprecedented effort to declassify millions of pages from the U.S. diplomatic and national security history
In 2008, Podesta authored his book The Power of Progress: How America’s Progressives Can (Once Again) Save Our Economy, Our Climate, and Our Country. In it, he articulates a vision of progressive values based on four core lessons: 1) Progressives stand with people, not privilege; 2) Progressives believe in the Common Good and a government that offers a hand up; 3) Progressives hold that all people are equal in the eyes of God and under the law; and 4) Progressives stand for universal human rights and cooperative global security.
In 2009, Podesta accompanied former President Clinton to North Korea for negotiations securing the release of two American journalists imprisoned on espionage charges. He can be seen in numerous widely circulated photographs of Clinton meeting with Kim Jong Il.

The Center for American Progress is a liberal[1][2][3][4] public policy research and advocacy organization. Its website describes it as “... a nonpartisan research and educational institute dedicated to promoting a strong, just and free America that ensures opportunity for all.”[5]
Its President and Chief Executive Officer is John Podesta, who served as chief of staff to then U.S. President Bill Clinton. Located in Washington, D.C., the Center for American Progress has a campus outreach group, Campus Progress, and a sister advocacy organization, the Center for American Progress Action Fund. Citing the significant number of its staff and former staff that have been appointed to positions in the Obama Administration, Time magazine recently declared that there is “no group in Washington with more influence at this moment in history.”[6][7]
Why do liberals always think that taxes you in a new way somehow eases the pain of being taxed?

Note 1: HST is a combined federal/provincial VAT collected in some provinces. In the rest of Canada, the GST is a 5% federal VAT and if there is a Provincial Sales Tax (PST) it is a separate non-VAT tax.
Note 2: No real "reduced rate", but rebates generally available for new housing effectively reduce the tax to 4.5%.
Note 3: These taxes do not apply in Hong Kong and Macau, which are financially independent as special administrative regions.
Note 4: The reduced rate was 14% until 1 March 2007, when it was lowered to 7%. The reduced rate applies to heating costs, printed matter, restaurant bills, hotel stays, and most food.
Note 5: VAT is not implemented in 2 of India's 28 states.
Note 6: Except Eilat, where VAT is not raised.[12]
Note 7: The VAT in Israel is in the process of being gradually reduced. It was reduced from 18% to 17% on March 2004, to 16.5% on September 2005, and was set to its current rate on July 1, 2006. There are plans to further reduce it in the near future, but they depend on political changes in the Israeli parliament.
Note 8: The introduction of a goods and sales tax of 3% will be introduced on the 6th May 2008 to plug a large budget deficit in the island's government budget.
Note 9: In the 2005 Budget, the government announced that GST would be introduced in January 2007. Many details have not yet been confirmed but it has been stated that essential goods and small businesses would be exempted or zero rated. Rates have not yet been established as of June 2007.
Note 10: The President of the Philippines has the power to raise the tax to 12% after January 1, 2006. The tax was raised to 12% on February 1.
