California asks Uncle Sam for $4.6 billion for high-speed trains

Imagine whizzing from Anaheim to San Francisco in just two hours and 57 minutes on a high-speed train, to enjoy dim sum in Chinatown.

For $40 billion or so, it might just come to pass!

On Thursday, the California High-Speed Rail Authority decided to apply for $4.57 billion in Federal High-Speed Rail Stimulus Funding for 10 projects throughout the state. That includes:

$2 billion for the Los Angeles to Anaheim segment, $1.28 billion for the San Francisco to San Jose segment, $819 million for the Fresno to Bakersfield segment, and $466 million for the Merced to Fresno segment. California would use state bond funds - from the recent passage of Proposition 1A, the High-Speed Rail Act, to match federal money dollar for dollar. The money would pay for preliminary engineering, project-level environmental work, mitigation, final design and construction.

San Diego is looking for a location for a new airport. Because of the NIMBYs the number one spot considered is Boulevard, 60 miles east in the desert. To make that location more acceptable they peoposed high speed rail to get people to and from that far-off location. The idea was not well received by the enviro-wackos and that was only for 60 miles. They’d never approve 800.

From POLITICO 2-17-09:

OBAMA PLOTS HUGE RAIL EXPANSION

. . .The $787.2 billion economic recovery bill. . .dedicates $8 billion to high-speed rail. . .added in the final closed-door bargaining at the instigation of White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel.

All this was a done deal last year.

Funding from a Federal Government who can’t run Amtrak to the county that had the largest financial implosion of any government in US history! Gee, I feel better already!

And kill the smelt?!

Kalifornia's failed leadrship has a warped sense of priority with their #1 goal being staying in power. Farmers are way down the list if they're even on it at all.

Good gawdamighty. California is crumbling, and these people want $40 billion dollars of (other) US taxpayers’ money for a high speed rail network?

And just what on earth will this do to improve anything in California? What value will such a huge undertaking give back to the American taxpayers who fund it?

Pure insanity...

What value did the grandaddy of pork, Boston's "Big Dig" give back to the American taxpayers who funded it to the tune of $13 billion?

Such considerations, while important to sane Americans, have little effect on the pork-loving liberal yahoos in congress and the White House who believe it is their god-given right to squander our money.

Mass transit tends to attract bums, gangbangers, socialist mayors and hairy, fat men wearing pink tu-tus and Charles Manson tatoos. I’d rather walk, thank you.

Take the train in Ukraine from Kiev to Sevastopol. Ukrainian National Railways do a very good job. Of course Ukraine is generally so flat, you won’t see many turns at all.

If enough people Wanted Trains to make them a Money Maker, Private Industry would have built them already.

When Govt has to subsidize it, Whatever it is, the people have already said No.

Taxed Enough Already.

If high speed transportation is such a great idea; I'd have to ask, why aren't private investors rushing to put up the money?

High speed trains in France are increasingly being delayed by wild boars on the tracks. Yes. The drivers are afraid that hitting a boar will derail the train! It seems that the wild boar population increased rapidly in the 90s and boar-proof trains hadn’t been factored into the design.
High speed trains in Europe are expensive, but they’re really practical. You don’t need them in the States though.
