Mullen, accompanied by Gen. David Petraeus and other top military officials, met at Ramstein Air Base in Germany with Gen. Stanley McChrystal, who is expected to ask for 30,000 to 40,000 additional troops. Mullen is now headed back to the U.S., FOX News has confirmed.
Mullen asked McChrystal for the meeting earlier in the week following the leak of McChrystal's strategic assessment to hear directly from his commander what resources and how many troops he will need to succeed in Afghanistan, aides told FOX News.
"He wanted to understand the request for himself before it arrives in Washington and he is asked to discuss, defend it," an aide told FOX News.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates is expected to receive the troop request Friday. But Gates will hold onto the request until the White House and Pentagon get to a "proper stage" in their assessment of the war in Afghanistan, a Pentagon spokesman said earlier this week, explaining that it is premature for the request to be considered until the assessment is fully reviewed.

The administration expects the media to go along with this, so if he is going to deny the request, and Gates “holds on to it”, the media will say that Obama didn’t get a request.
One more incident for the Hitler Obama comparison: Hitler decided his generals did not know what they were doing and took control of not just stategic planning but also for operational oversight. He decided he could do better than his generals based on his vast experience as a narcisist.

The following is from my post on a different thread which should now include Mullen and Gates. On Mullen, he is consuming his time with strategizing the addition of Females to Sub crews? Yea, now that is importent right now!
So lets change the arguement to more troops instead of fighting with an unwinnable ROE. General McCrystal; are you willing to sell your soul for that extra star on your shoulder to become the next Westmoreland? If not, you had better grow a pair and do the right thing.
First you take 3 months to “evaluate” the situation on the ground when any true leader would know if in a matter of 24 hours from meeting with the field commanders. Only 293 of our kids have died while you were dithering away trying to find a politically correct way around the mess.
Then you separate your report from your pretty please recommendations because the CIC is not willing to listen but has plenty of time to yuk it up with Letterman while our kids are dying due to a reluncance to provide air support in a known area full of bad guys. The fear was maybe some “civilian” yaking on a radio with our movements might break a fingernail.
As a veteran of the VietNam era whose father served two combat tours in Korea (2 PH’s) and one in VietNam (67-68, yes, during Thet) I can summarily say “With all due respect, Sir”, Damn you, Damn you. Throw the stars away and get into the same trenches with those you command and damn the torpedos! Whatever happens to anyone who gets in the way is on their head, not ours. They have had their chance to get out of the way and we should not be consumed with supplying the UN manicure kit to make it all better.
As a matter of fact, tell the UN to buzz off like our Prez did to our allies, the Polish and how the Pols responded by telling the UN that the next deployment was unilaterally cancelled.

Can you imagine how awkward it must be for his senior military advisors to be anywhere near this guy. I mean they were trained all their careers to shoot communists not salute them. Glad I’m out!
