J.J. Newberry chuckles when he watches "Lie to Me," the Fox television series about scientists who help cops catch crooks with their extraordinary ability to detect lies by analyzing facial expressions and body language.
Starring Tim Roth as Dr. Cal Lightman - a character inspired by the work of San Francisco scientist Paul Ekman, - the highly rated series is set to premiere its second season at 9 p.m. Monday, appearing on KTVU in the coveted slot after the network's smash hit "House."
"If you shrug your shoulder, rotate your hand or even just slightly raise your lower lip, Lightman will spot the lie," says the show's Web site.
"It's not so easy in real life," said Newberry, a former agent with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives who has helped crack some of the Bay Area's most notorious criminal cases and is considered one of the nation's foremost deception detectors.

Tell #1: Their lips move.
This show, like the CIS shows and the NCIS show, is loosely based on real life, but they are entertaining and that’s why I watch them.

I say:
Wrong!!!! Tell #1: They breath. They are alive....well, occasionally.
With 0bamma it’s everything he says....
LOL
Mentalist meets Psyched meets Monk.
I think it’s dangerous for people to be doing things like this on tv. People actually believe everything.
Of course, the one thing we can count on; we don’t need anyone to tell us Obama is a liar. Everything he has done indicates he is.
I haven’t seen the show, just posted the article.
I would think that if it’s on Fox, it would not have an anti-conservative bias.
Unfortunately, I think a large number of people, because of not being taught properly growing up, tend to oversimplify everything, and do not always understand things are much more complex and/or difficult than they initially seem. Problems that are solved in an hour or less on TV contribute to overall unrealistic expectations in life.
FWIW, narcissists and sociopaths can often lie, without tells.
I’m good at spotting Obama’s lies. See my tagline.

The "tells" are indicators of stress. Sociopaths can lie without stress. This also allows them to pass lie-detector tests.
A smart sociopath would research body language, and be able to project the tells he wanted to project.
I’d say give it another try. I’m not a huge fan of the show but I do enjoy it if I come across it while channel surfing.
Tim Roth’s acting is always solid. I loved hating him in Rob Roy.
What do they do with the guys who decline to make any statements?
GOOD generalization.
Problems Sexual relationships that are solved consummated in an hour or less on TV AND IN MOVIES contribute to overall unrealistic expectations in life.
Every episode I watched, maybe two, featured members of the Bush administration as illustrations of lying techniques.
I’ll pass on season 2. I can’t afford wasting hours having my intelligence insulted.
What do they do with the guys who decline to make any statements?
They also—I think every last one of them—showed Clinton.
You’re right they have shown Clinton more often then anyone else. In fact more then all Bush administration officials combined. I thought the best was where Obama was shown giving the middle finger in a debate, can remember the episode though.
Yet, every once in a while, zerO (who is already characterized as a narcissist), will make a statement and his hand will literally *fly* to touch his face for an instant. According to “Lie To Me”, this is tell for a lie.
I like the show and did some quick research online on the original researcher, Ekman. There are interesting quick-time slide shows on some of the sites to illustrate the thesis. You can test yourself. The micro-expressions are usually just a fleeting instant. It was quite enlightening. One would have to practice a lot to be as facile as the experts in the show, but I think it is possible. Now, could that testimony be accepted in court? I bet not. But it would be a motivator for the cop to keep looking for evidence.
LOL good one too
A known, acknowledged, adjudicated, certified liar.
So?
Well, your post seemed to insinuate that they only used conservative examples. Not true. That’s “so what.”
Can Lightman tell when a teleprompter is lying by the way the light bounces off of it?
Don’t get your thong in a knot. I don’t do insinuation well, I say what I think.
I found the show boring, biased, and tedious. If it lights up your prime time week, good for you.
