Congress Needs a 72-Hour Waiting Period
The Wall Street Journal ^ | 09-26-09 | JOHN FUND

Voters want enough time to debate bills. Nancy Pelosi doesn't.

Polls show overwhelming agreement outside the Beltway that it's more important for Congress to get health-care reform done right than done quickly. A Polling Company survey conducted last month found 95% agreeing that members of Congress shouldn't vote on any bill they haven't read in full.

That's why the bipartisan duo of Rep. Brian Baird, a Washington Democrat, and Rep. Greg Walden, an Oregon Republican, came up with the "72-hour resolution," which would require all non-emergency legislation to be posted online, in final form, for at least 72 hours prior to a floor vote. "Members of Congress are too often asked to make decisions on bills that can be longer than telephone books and are only given a few hours to actually read them," says Rep. Baird. "Both parties are guilty, and both should stop doing it."

Oh ZERO will go ballistic—no transparency and no alerting the public as to what is in the bills. I remember this Liar in Chief saying bills would be posted online for all to read!!!!!!!!!!!Where are the headlines on this now?
Is there a Republican out there who can bring this up?

In order to give the American public an opportunity to review and comment on legislation, Obama made a promise to post all non-emergency bills online at the White House website for five days before he would sign them. < Snip >

A similar promise has likewise been broken. In a town hall meeting in the summer of 2008, Obama promised to have the negotiations about Health Care Reform, particularly those involving drug companies, televised on C-SPAN. Televising these negotiations was meant to ensure to Americans that the agreements reached were done so in their best interests rather than in those of the special interest groups. So far, only routine voting sessions of Congress have been televised, while the meetings where agreements are hammered out have remained behind closed doors. The sort of openness that Obama has stressed is so important in these crucial negotiations and has been non-existent.

I agree with you. 72 hours isn’t enough time to read the legislation, contact our representatives and receive back answers regarding questions.
Besides that, Candidate Obama said all legislation would be on the internet for a week before a vote is taken.

Hmmmmmm. Let's make each congress critters' vote delay the same as their home district's mandated wait to purchase a firearm.

A bad law kills far, far more people than even the most enthusiastic mass murderer could ever hope to with any gun.

If this passes, that’s what you’ll get at your doctor’s office.

The only ones talking about it are the ones running to replace the current office holders. Which is WHY the current Office Holders are targeted for replacement.

This country has come to feel the same when Congress is in session as when the baby gets hold of a hammer.

Actually, all they have to do is read the bill and publish it so that the public can also read it before they vote?

The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money.

Yeah, but you know that one bill would cover over 700 unrelated topics and have as many pages as the tax code.

Should apply the same standards for legislation that Dem congress critters want to impose on gun owners: waiting period, one bill a month maximum, periodic proficiency testing (constitution, basic reading comprehension), mental stability test, etc.

Given that we absolutely don’t trust them... 72 hours is hardly enough. The people have to have time to do their due diligence, since no one else is doing it

What is the rush in passing laws? As far as I’m concerned all laws should require 2/3 majority vote in order to pass. We have too many as is.
