The dead end kids : Young, unemployed and facing tough future
NEW YORK POST ^ | September 27, 2009 | RICHARD WILNER

Posted on 09/27/2009 7:20:15 AM PDT by george76

The unemployment rate for young Americans has exploded to 52.2 percent -- a post-World War II high, according to the Labor Dept. -- meaning millions of Americans are staring at the likelihood that their lifetime earning potential will be diminished and, combined with the predicted slow economic recovery, their transition into productive members of society could be put on hold for an extended period of time.

And worse, without a clear economic recovery plan aimed at creating entry-level jobs, the odds of many of these young adults -- aged 16 to 24, excluding students -- getting a job and moving out of their parents' houses are long. Young workers have been among the hardest hit during the current recession -- in which a total of 9.5 million jobs have been lost.

Al Angrisani, the former assistant Labor Department secretary under President Reagan, doesn't see a turnaround in the jobs picture for entry-level workers and places the blame squarely on the Obama administration and the construction of its stimulus bill.

"There is no assistance provided for the development of job growth through small businesses, which create 70 percent of the jobs in the country," Angrisani said in an interview last week. "All those [unemployed young people] should be getting hired by small businesses."

There are six million small businesses in the country, those that employ less than 100 people, and a jobs stimulus bill should include tax credits to give incentives to those businesses to hire people,

Angrisani said he believes that Obama's economic team, led by Larry Summers, has a blind spot for small business because no senior member of the team -- dominated by academics and veterans of big business -- has ever started and grown a business.

Plenty of young ones don’t want to work. But, here in Indiana, tons of low paying service jobs such as McDonalds are almost all filled by Hispanics, probably illegals.

The way to stimulate small business is to put money into the hands of big business. Big business is small businesse’s best customer. (Speaking as the owner of a small business).

Nearly everything the Baraqqis have proposed is a detriment to small business owners.
Now wonder they are being very careful about future plans.
That’s why unemployment will remain high.

Not necessarily. I see young voters feeling a bad economy as a part of the Baraqqi coalition most likely to be captured by conservatives in 2010. We need to make the case.

This is the result of liberal policies. Don’t hurt the students self-esteem, pass them because they showed up..

These kids don’t know how to count change, couldn’t find Iowa on a map, have no idea who the first President was (by electoral vote, not counting continental congress), have no idea how to learn or study, yet they want to walk into a $25 per hour job with tats on their face, neck, pierced ears, noses, tongues and God knows what else.

If someone wants to work, it’s out there...sure, start at Mickey D’s for $8 per hour, work hard, work smart and it can lead to a successful career, but that’s below them..

Granted, there are young people out there that don’t fit the mold and who do study, work etc. who are having a difficult time, but I think overall, they’re in the minority.

I am an older 50ish guy that has returned to school, and am daily amazed by what I see in some of the kids I am surrounded by.
Heard a group the other day discussing some football players multi-million dollar salary and bonus, and heard this, “man if I got me a hundred million dollars, I’d have me a room full of shoes.”
A hundred million, and all this ‘future leader” can think about is buying some damn tennis shoes!!
Many come to class with no book, nothing to write with or on, and are surprised if the instructor says something about. Hell I am surprised because many times the instructor (term used loosely) just gives them “one more chance” “since you could not complete the assignment, we’ll make the whole class wait while you do it in class”
Then again, maybe it’s just me being an “old fart”

Partially, at any rate. Specifically, the part of using illegals to do “the jobs Americans won’t do”. Now that many illegals have been beating feet back home, shockingly enough we’re finding that Americans actually will do those jobs - at a market wage scale.

The part that’s not Bush’s fault is the wave of outsourcing/offshoring and what have you. Entry level work in many industries no longer exists for Americans. Corporations have cut off their noses to spite their faces because the productive work force - those of us who started a the bottom and worked our way up - is aging. I no longer deal with young Americans who are just launching thier careers. I’m dealing with 20-something Indians trying to launch their careers instead.

They’re genuinely nice people and all, but the company that holds their visa generally treats them like a consumable. Use it, abuse it, throw it away and get a new one. Companies have become very short sighted in the last 10-15 years with the focus on maximizing profits now instead of long term profitability.

I am in a position to hire full time and part-time workers for a convience store. 18 to 20 years olds come by the store, leave their skate-boards leaned up against the outside wall, and come in to apply for a job; wearing pants below their butt, multiple piercings, tattoos, etc. The females are even worse. No job experience, high school dropout, and then before leaving, purchase a candy bar and pop using an EBT card. It usually takes a little longer for them to complete their app. as they have to stop several times to text someone.

All the laid-off workers are snatching the jobs that entry-level folks would get. The hiking of the minimum wage, and the fact that young folks these days seem to have this entitlement mentality lead to huge unemployment for that demographic.

I don’t think we’ll feel the full effect of this until another 5-10 years when these 16-24 y/o get kicked out of their parent’s basement. When that happens, they will be a young and angry demographic that will press a socialist agenda. It will be like the 60’s again.

Voting out Obama will not be the end of the socialist agenda in America. I think we will see a lot of chaos before this ship rights itself again.

This has been an ongoing problem for years. The high influx of immigrants (legal and illegal) has robbed our youth the opportunity of a “first” job. Granted they were usually low paying in the service sector but the jobs provided needed experience, taught a work ethic, showing up on time and respecting management. Sad for the nation, sad for the children.

I have had the same experience. I am 37 and went back to school for another degree recently. I was in an Accounting class and at about 15 minutes into the class, this 19yr old kid stands up and informs the professor he has to leave because he has a “very” important touch football game to attend. It was absurd...

My daughter tells me stories about her friends who graduated with liberal arts, anthropology, fine arts, etc. degrees last spring who can’t find work. They chose a degree program that’s useless and none of them are willing to take anything but their dream job. Part time work is beneath them; starting at the bottom is beneath them. Only their dream job is acceptable. The words “entry level” are not for them. They have all moved back home while they wait for the doorbell to ring with a six figure offer.

I’m also older and back in school and the freshman attitude somewhat seems to be coddled as well. My history and political science professor are the two exceptions so far and I got a glare from my history prof. because some students didn’t get their “Blue books” for the exam and since they were only 50 cents, I grabbed some extra in case something happened to mine. I gave them out to those who asked and realized later that didn’t make him happy for them to not pay the price. But on the other hand, this was for 25% of their grade and it wasn’t unreasonable for them to assume that we could continue to use the one we only took up one page of from the last exam.

So, I guess it’s the mom in me. I am becoming known as the “Freshman Mom” with boyfriend/girlfriend advice, job advice, parent advice, etc...

Luckily, the group of kids I tend to ‘hang out with’ (or stand around waiting on the next class and smoke) are a little odd by society standards with the piercings and such, but tend to be the most Anti-Obama I’ve heard. Weird. The rebels are anti-Obama! They are all Ron Paul heads. I actually enjoy discussing politics with these 19-22 year olds! And I find I really don’t care if they have a little metal blob on their eyebrow. I like how they think and I figure they’ll outgrow that stage eventually. My best friend outgrew her 1984 mohawk.

I saw an interesting demonstration on my street this month.
Two very similar homes were re-roofed.

One home was done by Hispanics (most likely illegals).
It took about 6 hours and looks great. The place was cleaned up spotless afterwards. These guys were like robots.

On the other, my other neighbor specifically sought out a contractor who would not use Hispanics. It took them 4 days. They took a couple hours off for lunch everyday. When I walked my dog past the house, they shouted stupid comments. They messed up his lawn bigtime with a truck and torn off shingle segments and nails are all over. You can see from the ground that they didn’t get all the shingles flat.

I’m getting ready to build a new garage. Which crew should I hire?

LOL, exactly! I know there are some very hard working, well deserving young people out there looking for their first job, but there are too many with a sense of entitlement who didn’t make the effort to learn any marketable skills in college. I thank God my daughter did her research and chose a field with good employment prospects even if it does mean additional years in school.

Very valuable life lesson I got at age 21. I was out on my own of course, my own apartment, car, etc...

So I am having trouble finding a job a few months before Christmas, no one wants to hire then unless they are desperate.

So someone suggests Waffle House (which is a diner chain in the south). I made the joke, “I have too many teeth to work at Waffle House”. haahaahaaa.....

Yeah, within a few weeks I was GRATEFUL for that job at the Waffle House and even more that they give you a meal a day as a bonus. Free food AND money!

Ever since then I have never snubbed my nose at ANY job. I decided I will shovel poop if necessary and be respectable while doing it.

When I was in high school almost a decade ago, my father gave me valuable advice "work is noble" and I took those words literally and got myself a job at the local grocery store. (I lived in an affluent area where many kids were "too good" to hold down menial jobs.)
