Obama Wants More School, Less Vacation
NBC Miami ^ | Sun, Sep 27, 2009 | Natalie Rix

President Obama wants kids to spend more time in school. Students in the U.S. need more class time to remain competitive with students around the world, the President said. Obama advocates schools adding time to classes, extending hours into evenings and weekends, and shortening summer vacation.

"Now, I know longer school days and school years are not wildly popular ideas, not with Malia and Sasha, not in my family, probably not in yours. But the challenges of a new century demand more time in the classroom," Obama said.

Some schools that extended their hours have seen positive results. Early results from Massachusetts' expanded learning time initiative, which adds extra time to the school year, show that some students involved in the program do better on state tests than those at regular public schools.

A good way to lower support among young people.

More time for indoctrination doesn’t equal better education.

Full time school means full time indoctrination.

Yup, more time away from parents and more time with the state. To all with two incomes...you CAN live on one income and be with your children. It can be done, and the rewards are infinite.

Actually better teaching and less indoctrination would go a long ways in catching up with the rest of the world.

Everyone whose livelihood depends on the participation of children during summer vacation (for example, camps, summer school, tourist attractions) just had a heart attack...

Don’t waste kid’s time on “Barack Hussein Obama, mmmm, mmmm, mmmm”, and the 5 days/week will be more than enough.

Or at a very minimum, see if you can afford a private Christian school!

Ha Ha! The kids will love that. In the past a few kids I know in HS have summer jobs to build funds to start a life after school or college. But this last summer they have not been able to find work thanks to King Obama. Last I heard that here in this State youth unemployment is around 50%.

I agree with him on this issue. Kids don't need 3 months off in the summer. Not many kids are out plowing the back forty these days.

I’m sure the rank and file of the NEA won’t mind. (snicker)
