Afghanistan troops surge: stakes for Obama could not be higher
London Times ^ | 9/27/2009 | Tim Reid

Posted on 09/27/2009 5:53:14 PM PDT by Saije

We have not yet reached a Harry Truman v Douglas MacArthur moment in Washington — the extraordinary day in April 1951 when the US President fired his top general for disagreeing with him on his Korean War policy.

Yet this much is now clear: a potential battle now looms between Barack Obama and his top generals over Afghanistan that could define, even destroy, his presidency.

After only nine months as Commander-in-Chief, President Obama has reached a critical point in determining whether to order a surge of additional troops into Afghanistan. It is a strategy that is being demanded by General Stanley McChrystal, his ground commander, General David Petraeus, the head of US Central Command, and by Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff — the most senior military officer in the US.

The reason we know that General McChrystal urgently wants more troops is because his brutally grim, and until last week secret, assessment of the war, which he said could be lost within a year without a troop surge, was leaked in full to The Washington Post’s famed investigative reporter, Bob Woodward.

Inside the White House, Mr Obama has indeed ordered a lengthy and deliberative delay to decide what his Afghanistan strategy should be, only six months after announcing to great fanfare his plan for the war: a classic counter-insurgency mission to protect the Afghan population, destroy the Taleban and rebuild the country’s civilian infrastructure. General McChrystal was hand-picked to execute that mission.

Mr Obama has scheduled at least five meetings with his national security team over the next few weeks to re-examine his Afghanistan and Pakistan strategy...

The stakes for Mr Obama, in the decision he must ultimately make, could not be higher.

Uh, I don't think so. This isn't Truman vs. McArthur because Stanley McChrystal is trying to carry out the war plan decided on by Obama less than 6 months ago. He isn't advocating an invasion of Iran (a la McArthur who wanted to go after China) or trying to do something different than what he was ordered to do when he took command. He's doing what he was told to do and he's letting the President know what he needs to do it.

“.....stakes for Obama could not be higher....”

Yeah, it’s all about Barry, nothing else matters.

What about our troops, the future of our security agreements in the region, the stability of Pakistan?

This 0bama worship is sickening!!!

I’m sure he’ll follow the advice of General Pelosi and General Kucinich over Colonel McChrystal.

What McChrystal needs to do is get those ROE changed instead of willing them put the troops more in harms way.

They will not win a PC war there, even soldiers who have been there have told me this. This is besides the fact that nation building there is nothing but a ridiculous dream.

Some reporter needs to actually ask Obama if he wants any syrup with that waffle.

Obama is really hindered in Afghanistan as he hamstrung by political considerations.

He can’t pull out, because of the adverse political consequences with the electorate.

But he can’t make a full fledged effort for victory- as that would alienate his peacenik friends.

In either situation, he really doesn’t care what the results of the war are- except how it reflects on him.

Barry needs to find a way to effectively blame future bad events in Afghanistan on President Bush.

Obama inherited the Iraqi war which was won by US troops; he went to the Middle East and apologized for America’s misdeeds in his words and almost immediately violence flared again in Iraq. It would not surprise me if he did what every Democrat POTUS has done since LBJ and that is to turn tail and run, saying ‘we won’ as he races away...No shame, no consideration of future consequences...

Afghanistan will become home to another dictator, will develop nuclear weaapons and will terrorize the entire Middle East when it allies with Iran and Korea to form a true Axis of Evil..

We hope not, but it could happen that way..

As I recall MacArthur wasn't after so much an invasion but to go into China in “hot pursuit” much like police officers may go into other jurisdiction following a suspect in “hot pursuit.” In hindsight he was right, of course. Had his plan developed there would be no North Korea and the ROK and US forces would be lined up along the Yalu River.

During the time I was in Kores (52-53)the Chinese troops were everywhere. After MacArthur left, at least by 52, it was strictly a defensive war - on our part.

On health care he insists action be taken NOW. No time to even read the bills. But with the war, a war he and his party ran saying they supported there’s no rush at all.
