These 15-65 cm reading for a tsunama are less substantial than the daily tide swings of near 6 ft. A non-event. Where I live a substantial tsunami would sweep me away. This one is a sleeper.Dont call your coastal relatives!

Will the shell picking be really good in the aftermath? Or will it just be a bunch of body parts, dead critters and hypodermic needles? ;)

(I used to live in coastal CA. I was always disappointed in the beach pickin’s.)

Statement as of 5:42 PM PDT on September 29, 2009

... A tsunami advisory is in effect for Orange County and San Diego County coastal areas...

There is no Tsunami Watch or warning in effect at this time for the extreme southwestern California coast. However... dangerous currents and surges are possible in the local harbors and bays.

Forecasts indicate that a tsunami with amplitudes in the range of 15 to 20 centimeters (6 to 8 inches) is expected along the Southern California coast.

The tsunami threat is forecast to begin in coastal San Diego and Orange counties around 916 PM this evening... then build to its maximum height between 1015 and 1045 PM before subsiding.

Coastal residents are advised to stay out of the water... off the beach... and away from harbors and marinas. Wave heights and currents are amplified by irregular shoreline and are difficult to predict. The initial wave may not be the largest. Later waves may be larger. Mariners in water deeper than 600 feet should not be affected.

A tsunami advisory means that a tsunami capable of producing strong currents or waves dangerous to persons in or very near the water is imminent or expected. Significant widespread inundation is not expected for areas under the advisory. Currents may be hazardous to swimmers... boat... and coastal structures and may continue for several hours after the initial wave arrival.

The tsunami advisory is a result of the 8.0 earthquake that occurred at 10:48 am PDT near the samoan islands.

Stay tuned to your local media source or NOAA Weather Radio for later developments.

This product will be updated when new information becomes available. http://www.wunderground.com/US/CA/043.html#SPE

I pulled a bale off a San Diego beach in the 70s. It was worthless — the saltwater ruined it, and God only knows how many days or weeks it had been drifting in the current.

the one time I was down in Texas on the coast they had had a storm at sea and it washed all the BS up on shore could not go swimming. One time in Tampeco MX was down on a mission trip and they had had a oil spill and oil was all over the public beach so we drove to another beach that was not affected. That was the only time in my life I got sun burned on the top of my feet ouch!

These things are very hard to predict. A two foot tsunamai doesn’t sound like much, but it depends how wide it is. If it’s really wide, then it will build up to much greater heights as the water gets shallower. It also can be compressed if it enters into the right shaped bay, as tides regularly do in the Bay of Fundy.

I wouldn’t expect too much on the west coast from that distance, but no point in standing around on the beach when it hits.

I thought with a tsunami it isn’t the size of the waves but the surging of the water and then the outsurge that is so devastating and destructive? The one that hit Indonesia a few years ago didn’t even cover some people’s heads on land (there are videos taken at hotels) but it killed how many people and caused so much damage. It isn’t a tidal wave, that’s the deceptive thing.

why this big push to measure everything in communist... I mean metric?

You need to ask? Well, of course our European cousins have always been our betters, so it follows that we should bend over backward to emulate everything they do.

If you hadn't noticed, you'll almost never hear a university trained egghead using anything but the metric system when describing dimensions, distances, or volumes.

It's become something of a liberal flag. Americans who use the metric system in conversation are almost assuredly pompous libs.

All tidbits of insider esoteric knowledge aside,
dynamic wave/beach areas can and do frequently exhibit sudden increase in water level of 2-3 ft or more from the surge of an increasing tide and sudden increase in wave size
from offshore storms. Thats normal! We get unusual events from offhsore storms driving into shore with 20ft seas that are much more bigger of deal, but the coast and people handle it year in and year out. Repeat, All fear mongering aside, This tsunami is strictly a non-event.

“An International Tsunami Survey Team (ITST) studying the effects of the December 26 tsunami on Indonesia’s island of Sumatra documented wave heights of 20 to 30 m (65 to 100 ft) at the island’s northwest end and found evidence suggesting that wave heights may have ranged from 15 to 30 m (50 to 100 ft) along a 100-km (60-mi) stretch of the northwest coast. These wave heights are higher than those predicted by computer models made soon after the earthquake that triggered the tsunami.”

San Francisco was roughly an 8. They don’t have nine pointers in California, where the faults are “slip-faults.”

Off the coast of Washington / Oregon, nine pointers + are possible.....those are “subduction” type earthquakes. They last had one in the area in the year 1700....it sent a bad tsunami all the way to Japan.

Same event. Though tsunami pressure wave's can travel about 450-500 mph, it still takes time to cross the ocean. In the meantime as the wave spreads it loses energy as ripples from a rock in a pond lose energy as it spreads out vertically.

The energy loss occurs as the increased volume of water reaches shallower depths coinciding with the approach to shorelines. However, depending upon the shoreline, if the shoreline sloughs off at all in reaction to earthquakes or to the increased surge of water, the tsunami from over a thousand miles away can still be the cause of serious damage.
