Canned pumpkin is in great demand in Oklahoma Shortage: Grocery stores struggle to fill shelves
News OK ^ | September 30, 2009

Posted on 09/30/2009 1:31:04 PM PDT by Shermy

Bakers wanting to start the season with a freshly baked pumpkin pie might be hoping they have a can of pumpkin stashed in a cabinet somewhere.

Bad weather in parts of the country has caused an early shortage of canned pumpkin, although some grocers say they’ll have it on shelves soon — and in plenty of time for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Dale Brooks, operations manager for Crest Foods in Edmond, said their stores haven’t had canned pumpkin in stock since April.

"I’ve had a few people ask for it,” he said.

"I’m supposed to be getting some in next week,” he said, but his supplier wouldn’t guarantee a shipment.

Buy For Less stores also are running low on canned pumpkin. Marketing director Denise Hawkins said the stores haven’t been able to place their holiday orders and have been told there will be a limited number of cans per shipment.

"At this time, orders for the holidays are up in the air,” she said.

She advises shoppers to stock up now if having canned pumpkin is really important to their holiday festivities.

The apparent shortage won’t affect bakery or frozen premade pumpkin pies, she said.

Weather to blame The problem stemmed from the 2008 pumpkin harvest, said Roz O’Hearn, a spokeswoman for Nestle. The company owns the Libby’s pumpkin brand, which supplies nearly 90 percent of all canned pumpkin.

The Libby’s crop is grown on 5,000 acres in Morton, Ill., near Peoria. Poor weather led to a smaller than normal 2008 harvest, which meant there were fewer cans left over after last year’s holiday baking season, when most people use it in pies and bread.

O’Hearn said there was fear about the 2009 crop because there was wetter than normal weather around the time the pumpkins were planted. But the harvest is under way, and it appears to be better than last year’s, she said.

Pumpkins used in cooking are usually different varieties than those carved up as jack o’lanterns.

If you love pumpkin pie, you might by some cans of paste now.

This is going to be a bad season for pumpkin production.

However, if for some investors, it is good news. I myself new this was coming, therefore months ago I put my life savings into pumpkin-backed derivative securities.

Don’t worry, it’s not risky. My investment in insured by cantaloupe industry-backed credit default obligation certificates.

90% of all canned pumpkin is grown on 5,000 acres? Wow. That is amazing. That’s about 7 and a half square miles. A lot of pumpkins to be sure, but enough for the pumpkin pie needs of 308,000,000 people?

So the canned pumpkin you purchase in the fall of 2009 is already a year old? Yum.

Sweet potato pie is just as good, and easier to make with fresh ingredients.

How convenient, right before the holidays, eh? Oh,this can’t be right, there’s no inflation in America, right?

They slaughtered milk cows to keep prices from plummeting, killed chickens and baby chicks and dumped tons of cherries for the same reason...They already do manipulate the food chain...healthcare, and even water...

If you like pumpkin pie, I bet you’d like a good sweet potato pie as well. It’s strange, pumpkin pie is about my least favorite, but I thoroughly enjoy a good sweet potato pie.

You can always substitute another kind of squash for the pumpkin—butternut, acorn, just about any of the winter squashes. Much better, actually, if you use the fresh squash because it doesn’t have the can taste.

Good question. I’ll have to look it up when it’s time. My guess is it’s not too good and if eaten... it needs to be a very small portion. If I eat it, it will be without the pie crust.... I miss that stuff.

Heck, I am a diabetic and I still occasionally have a SMALL piece of chocolate cake.

FAREWAY MEATS YES. We shop at HyVee for most groceries, but most meats are from Fareway, 170th & Harrison, Omaha. Didn’t the OWH have an article just yesterday that the pumpkin crops around here are very good this year?

We don’t have a Fareway in my little Missouri town, only a HyVee. I keep hearing about Fareway on the coupon/deal boards I visit.

However, I do have several cans of pumpkin already, and won’t need to use those until I use all my Sugar Pie pumpkins that I harvested this month. :) I can’t wait to taste fresh pumpkin pies!

I was stationed in Atsugi back in the 90’s and Thanksgiving of ‘96 you couldn’t find real butter at any of the commissaries around Tokyo. I went on a practice bombing mission with some guys up to Misawa and the secondary mission objective was to raid the Misawa commissary for butter.

“German Chocolate cake” ..... my favorite.

My wife can’t make stuff like that anymore, because I can’t deal with that much of the good stuff in the house.. no will power for some things. So, she buys it by the piece at Safeway and we split it. ;>)

Same here, no sugar allowed in our house except for when we have company over and I pick up a German Chocolate Cake and/or a pie from the local HEB Grocery Store. I have even switched Hubby over to Splenda for his coffee and tea, I drink mine plain. It’s not so bad once you get used to it.

Bake some pie pumpkins! Turn your oven to 350 degrees. Slice those babies in half. Scoop out the seeds and pulp. Quarter the halves. Put them on a baking sheet. Bake for an hour! When you take these out of the oven, scoop out the insides, discard the rinds, and you have the best beginning to your pumpkin pie ever! Add the spices, eggs, molasses, brown sugar, bourbon, and cream and you’re good to go!!

Why buy pumpkin? I just got butternut squash on sale for .68¢ a pound and will bake that for pies. It’s much tastier, easier to clean, and usually cheaper too.
