The Revolt Up North

Health Care Systems: A return to private health care is rising from the grass roots north of the border. While we rush headlong toward socialized medicine, Canadians are saying, "No, thanks — been there, done that."

We recently told the story of Ava Isabella Stinson, born 13 weeks premature at St. Joseph's hospital in Hamilton, Ontario. She weighed all of two pounds and had no time to be put on a waiting list. But there were no open neonatal intensive care beds for her at St. Joseph's or anywhere else in the entire province of Ontario it seems.

Canada's perfectly planned and cost-effective system had no room at the inn for Ava, who of necessity had to be sent across the border to a Buffalo, N.Y., hospital to suffer under this supposedly chaotic and costly system of ours. She got the care she needed at an American hospital under a system the administration has labeled "unsustainable."

Canadians are getting sick of this — many quite literally. Last year, Calgary resident Christina Woodkey went to her local government-run health clinic when her leg pain became so severe she could no longer hike or ski. She was told she needed to see a hip specialist, but because her condition was not life-threatening, she'd have to wait a year.

Personally, I believe that a takeover of the nations health care system by the federal government is grounds for insurrection.

Canadians are scared that once we get government healthcare, they won’t be able to come here anymore for service.

“Canadians are scared that once we get government healthcare, they won’t be able to come here anymore for service.”

Definitely. And what you might see is places like Mexico (if they deal with their crime) or the Caribbean setting up “Medical Care Zones”, similar to Free Trade Zones. These would be zones where you’d have top-rate care, but free of the costs that kill us here. For example, nurses would be paid closer to local wages, drugs would be cheap, and, especially, lawyers would not be welcome. The doctors would essentially be American refugees.

I saw an interesting article that under Obama-care, the Indian Reservations will become bastions of free-market, high quality health care.

They are “sovereign nations” after all, and as many are located close to urban areas, they will quickly see, and meet, the demand for health care without waiting lists.

Did you find out if there will be slot machines and 21 tables in the patient lobbies?

Posting #7 is correct. Canadians are afraid that if the U.S. adopts Socialist medicine, they (the Canadians) won’t be able to get quick treatment for illnesses, as their own health care system has rationing and long waiting times. Indeed, we may see American-staffed clinics in Carribean nations doing big business if this happens.

However under govt sponsored insurance or private insurance that will be excessively controlled & manipulated & squeezed out by "gubmint (un)health insurance", I would be willing to bet that any care provided by health care zones, would not be eligible for insurance under 0bozoCare, and we would need to fund any treatment at these zones on our own.

Pretty interesting prediction....that could well happen.

From what I have heard, India is already making bucks in this market.

I don't know how I would feel about leaving this country for treatment...but it could happen.

I've always loved islands!!
