Is Obama surrounded by self-hating Jews? That was one of the most ridiculous—and yet perversely telling—stories to emerge from the last several weeks of Israeli media coverage.
Not because the president is surrounded by Jewish aides who want to sabotage their own identity. Far from it. David Axelrod openly reveres the old Jewish deli in Chicago known as Manny’s. He has a sign in his West Wing office saying Barack Obama in Hebrew script. And Rahm Emanuel could no more hate his Jewish and Israeli ties than he could the vocabulary of the Anglo-Saxons.
On those terms, Axelrod and Emanuel are self-hating self-haters.
Still, one of the leading Israeli newspapers, Ha’aretz, reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyanhu was so paranoid that he described both Axelrod and Emanuel as “self-hating Jews.” The White House says that the Israeli government denied the story and dismisses the idea, with plenty of reason.

In a column on the Huffingtonpost, Bronfman asserted that Obama is the candidate who will act in the best interest of Israel. Of Obama’s Republican rival, the philanthropist said: “As an American Jew who loves Israel, I cannot support John McCain.”
Bronfman, a former head of the World Jewish Congress, wrote in the piece titled “Israel’s Best Interest is a Morally Strong America” that an honest broker was needed to push Israelis and Palestinians toward a two-state solution.

Revering a non Kosher deli makes you "Jewish"? I guess, since "old" in this Jewish context is 65 years. Not sure I'd pay much attention to David Axelrod's eating habits.
Actually Israel is about 20% Arab Muslim. When you see polls like this, typically they're querying Israeli Jews, though you have to go to the source to find that out.

Incidentally, if you took a poll among Moslems in Israel, I would guess that a significant majority of them would classify Obama as pro-Israel - a large contrast with the Israeli Jews!

The sad thing is that to the author of this piece, “Jewish identity” IS nothing more than loving a deli or having a sign with Hebrew writing on it. If you set the bar that low, what’s to self hate? To be sure, there are self-hating Muslims who think that this world conquest and mass conversion of all infidels by the sword is a bad idea, even if they do like couscous and stuffed grape leaves. But Axelrod can’t be a self-hating Jew, because he eats bagels and lox. What else IS there about being Jewish? A belief in our mission to be a light to the nations? A belief in our existence as G-d’s chosen people? Naaah.

I tried, but the most I could muster is disdain and contempt for The One. How do you hate someone who’s such a light weight? I hate what he’s doing to both the country of my birth and my newly adopted country, I hate waiting for yet another shoe to drop on the economy, the value of the dollar, the war on terror, immigration, health care, free speech and the free market. I hate wondering which Reichstag will be set on fire next, but hate Obama? He’s nothing but a symbol for the philosophy that now pervades in two out of three of the branches of the federal government. I hate the philosophy, not its symbol.
