Texas Governor's cousin shot and killed by deputies

MONTAGUE COUNTY, TEXAS (BNO NEWS) – Deputies with the Montague County Sheriff's Department have shot and killed a cousin of Texas Governor Rick Perry, officials told BNO News on Thursday.

The cousin was identified as 74-year-old Larry Don Wheeler. Montague County District Attorney Jack McGaughey told BNO News that sheriff's deputies initially responded to a 911 call of shots fired at his home at a Montague County country club on Saturday night.

When two deputies arrived on the scene, Wheeler, who was sitting on his backyard deck, pointed a shotgun at the officers and opened fire. One officer sustained a wound to his hand from the shots, McGaughey said. The officers then returned fire, and fatally shot Wheeler.

It was not immediately clear as to why Wheeler may have decided to open fire. The Texas Rangers, and an investigator from the Montague County District Attorney's Office is investigating the case. McGaughey said the sheriff's department is not involved in the investigation.

A spokeswoman for Governor Perry confirmed to BNO News that one of his cousins was killed but had no further information. It was also not clear why the governor did not decide to release the information earlier. Asked if the governor would release a statement, the spokeswoman said she was not sure. She also had no information about the relationship Perry may have had with Wheeler.

Relatives can be problematic but there isn’t much you can do about them.

He was in his backyard at a country club home???

Maybe he should have stuck to golf. Not good.

Nope. We choose our friends, not our family.

Seems a little odd.

Wasn't Perry the one that flew in on a state funded aircraft for grand opening ceremonies at a new Muslim center in Texas a few years back?

“Nope. We choose our friends, not our family.”

No kidding. My aunt is a well-known (notorious?) British peace-activist and commie sympathizer. She has been at it since before World War 2 and the days of the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact. She was briefly under house arrest in 1940-41 and was turned loose only when Hitler betrayed his former accomplices by invading the Soviet Union. Today, at age 90, she defends Palestinian butchers just as ardently as she defended Stalin, Mao, and Pol Pot when they were the darlings of the left.

I have 8 1st-cousins, and over 100 2nd-cousins ... 3rd cousins number around 500. (Yes, I have counted them in my Genealogical database) It's in the 1000's if you include those by marriage. I'm sure there are some hefty flakes in there somewhere.

The term "Cousin" doesn't mean much ...

This isn’t strictly related to the 2010 Texas Governor’s Race, but I’m pinging you anyway. If there was any relationship (besides familial) between Perry and Wheeler, expect it to be exploited for the race.

Hearing the cousin supported Perry politically for many years, and the cousin was a big pro death penalty guy, in addition, the cousin seems to be directly involved in Perry's current political campaign.

Kind of odd. I know several cousins of Perry and they are all Cops. In fact, one of his cousins is the head of the Criminal Justice Department at UNT-Dallas.

Suicide by sheriff’s deputies.

That don't jive with the reported story...

The suspect was armed with a loaded weapon, and actually shot at the LEOs...

I have lots and lots of cousins, too (Irish Catholic) but not one of them has ever has a run in with the law more serious than "60 in a 50".

And, a country club community to boot. At 74, I wonder if there isn't some underlying physical ailment at play here. I'm no doctor - in any way - but, there are several conditions that can result in delusions, mania or some other break with reality.

At 74 there are all sorts of illnesses that could cause a previously "solid citizen" (assuming that he was until recently) go off the deep end...everything from brain tumors to severe depression (older folks are more susceptible to depression) and lots of things in between.

"Suicide by cop" generally occurs with an individual that is down and out, for whatever reason, but I've never heard of any case where the person committing this act goes about it with an loaded firearm, let alone shooting and striking law enforcement members.

This don't fit the suicide scenario.

Every case I have ever heard of when it was thought to be suicide by cop, the dead person always pointed an "unloaded" weapon at the LEOs, or did something really stupid causing themselves to be shot, but seldom intended to hurt or kill the cops in the process.

This guy was totally pro-law enforcement, death penalty etc, and had connections to law enforcement within his family etc....

Him opening up and shooting cops does not fit the usual suicide by cop scenario.

I bet there is something more to things than just what is in the story. Maybe he DID have some condition/illness that broke his connection to reality, as some have speculated; however, my somewhat cynical side is wondering if perhaps the ‘story’ as presented is not truthful... ie a setup/frame.

I know there are “good”/competent police officers out there, but there seems to be a growing number of “bad”/corrupt/’respect-my-authority!’-types, IMO. {And our “justice” department’s actions and blatant/overwhelming [illegalities &] corruption in DC certainly DO NOT encourage good-faith.}

“He also had a passion for politics — including working to support his cousin, Texas Gov. Rick Perry”

“member of Perry’s 2006 re-election steering committee.”

The bit about the pro-death penalty, I can find that link again....See #16 regarding the poster that mentioned other members of the family being in LE.

However....There are now reports where the governor is saying he could pick the cousin out of line up....lol

This wouldn’t be totally unexpected...And might even be true.
