At 74 there are all sorts of illnesses that could cause a previously "solid citizen" (assuming that he was until recently) go off the deep end...everything from brain tumors to severe depression (older folks are more susceptible to depression) and lots of things in between.

"Suicide by cop" generally occurs with an individual that is down and out, for whatever reason, but I've never heard of any case where the person committing this act goes about it with an loaded firearm, let alone shooting and striking law enforcement members.
This don't fit the suicide scenario.
