CITY OF CHICAGO BUDGET CRISIS
If the economy continues to tank, the city budget could fall $200 million short by year’s end, the mayor’s top aide said today... A quarter of the way through the budget year, City Hall is short about $33 million, even after $31 million in costcutting, Chief of Staff Paul Volpe said It could be upwards of $200 million (by the end of the year) just based on these first two months and how we closed out the final quarter of last year, he said, noting that income, sales and real estate transfer taxes all were well below projections.

CHICAGO TRANSIT AUTHORITY BUDGET CRISIS
The Chicago Transit Authority is warning once again of service cuts and rate hikes, but the agency says they will only happen as a last resort The transit agency is now facing a $155 million budget deficit, which they will plug in part with internal cuts But if there is still a shortfall after that, the CTA may be forced to reduce service and increase fares.

CHICAGO PUBLIC SCHOOLS BUDGET CRISIS
District leaders say between now and June they will lay out a series of steps to close the budget. They have some ideas, but nothing is firm just yet. They did say they would like more money from the state, and they did say there would be trimming The projected $475 million budget deficit that Mr. Huberman has outlined today is very real, and very serious, said Board of Education President Michael Scott.

STATE OF ILLINOIS BUDGET CRISIS
Gov. Pat Quinn is asking lawmakers to significantly hike the state’s income tax as Illinois grapples with what he calls the greatest crisis of modern times The tax increase is necessary to close a $11.5 billion deficit and part of a broader plan to reform state government, Quinn told the General Assembly on Wednesday He said Illinois also needs to limit government spending, overhaul state pension systems, repair crumbling roads and bridges and fight public corruption.
To be direct and honest: Our state is facing its greatest crisis of modern times, Quinn told lawmakers in formally
presenting his budget. Pass this budget and let’s begin a new era of reform, responsibility and recovery.”

Mayor Daley is apologizing for corruption in his administration. He is reacting to the conviction of former Streets and Sanitation commissioner Al Sanchez, who was found guilty of trading city jobs for political favors Monday Sanchez is the highest-ranking former city official to be convicted in the federal investigation into city hiring
It wasn’t the first time Daley had faced such a situation. Donald Tomczak, his former deputy water commissioner — convicted in the Hired Truck scandal — was also accused of running a pro-Daley political army. And Robert Sorich, the mayor’s former intergovernmental affairs director, is still in prison for a patronage scandal
In the Sanchez conviction, as in the others, the mayor would not say he knew anything. Former city clerk Jim Laski, a one-time Daley ally who did prison time in his own
corruption case, told ABC7’s Karen Jordan not to believe the mayor for a minute.

“If it isn’t the most corrupt state in the United States, it’s certainly one hell of a competitor,” [Robert] Grant said. “Even the most cynical agents in our office were shocked.”

Chicago Tribune, December 9, 2008
In Chicago, civic construction delays and cost overruns are legendary. Millennium Park, the city’s newest jewel downtown, came in four years behind schedule and three times over budget. In July of 2009, city officials finally admitted that a massive plan to revamp the Chicago Housing Authority originally slated to be finished by 2010 won’t be completed until 2015.
In June of 2008, construction was halted on a “super-station” for planned express trains between Chicago-area airports and the Loop business district, with the Chicago Tribune reporting,
“A combined $213 million has been spent on the project, yet there is not much more than a massive hole in the ground to show for it.” Completing the station would cost an
additional $100 million. There are no plans to do so, other than the mayor’s assurance that the train lines will be open in time for the Olympics.
Oprah looks Beastly without the flattering lighting they use on her TV set./cattiness
WOW .. how tragically, graphically so.
This is a keeper!
FNC just interrupting Glenn’s replay for THE arrival
This is the third time in a week Obama has pre-empted Glenn Beck! ROAR!
This is the third time in a week Obama has pre-empted Glenn Beck! ROAR!
You’re RIGHT!!!!! It’s an O-spiracy!
Watching it—is there a day when the guy is not traveling or talking on tv?
Too weird how Obama’s arrival interrupted Glenn talking about corrupt politics in Chicago and the Olympics.

Don’t know which is for what.
This is the first one posted, running AccuWeather now:
Thanks—I live in Chicago area, so it has been Olympics, Oprah,Daley, Michelle, and now bama 24/7 for the past week. Ugh.
Sadly, I would have been happy to have the Games here in US if it wasn’t a vehicle for political payback on part of Daley et al. The more the politicians are involved, the more apparent it becomes that this has nothing to do with sports, athletes, or world competition and everything to do with money and power.
No, he won’t get out of our face!
NO GAMES CHICAGO
No Games Chicago has sent the same team who went to Switzerland In June to meet with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to Copenhagen to do it again.
We arrive in Copenhagen!
Our purpose then and now is to take a simple message to the members of the IOC the people of Chicago do not want the 2016 Olympics. 84% of them, according to a recent poll conducted by the Chicago Tribune.
45% dont want the games under any circumstances and 84% dont want public funds used for the party. Since the city has already spent or committed over $240 million for the games (see our tally below), that threshold has already been crossed.
Hence 84% of the people of Chicago oppose the bringing of the 2016 Olympics to Chicago, Thats a big number, too big to be ignored.
We didnt come on a chartered jet and were not wearing clothes designed by the First Ladys dress maker. No TV crews saw us off and none will welcome us back. We did grassroots fund raising up the last moment to pay for the trip.
When we went to Switzerland in June we took 100 copies of our Book of Evidence (download your very own copy 12MB PDF file) that laid out our arguments as to why Chicago would not be an ideal host for the 2016 Olypics. Each of these arguments has been strengthened by developments since then.
Were well armed with new evidence.
Will the arrival of President Obama blind them to the defects in Chicagos bid and the angry mood of the people who feel abandoned by their government?
Will the press continue to fawn over the bid team and repeat their spin as gospel?
Stand by for further details.

Some of us are capable of chewing gum and rubbing our tummy at the same time. Hold your enemies closer. I want to hear their rap.
NOTE: FNC IS ALSO COVERING THE CHICAGO PRESENTATION LIVE
Awww .. we should take out our hankies for Rahm ...
“The latest: Sen. Dick Durbin, who is accompanying Obama on the flight to Copenhagen, said that White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel was reluctant for the president to make the trip because of his busy schedule, coupled with the unresolved health care legislation.”
But then he contradicts that with more pithy Rahmtalk:
Rahm Emanuel, the Chicagoan who is chief of staff for Obama, has an answer: “You know, we’ll make sure they get some good seats once Chicago does host the games.’’
ABC News’ Jake Tapper reports on a talk with Emanuel about the administration’s strategy for securing the games at Friday’s meeting of the IOC in Copenhagen.
What’s the pitch?
“There’s no better city in the United States or the world to host the international community than Chicago — because of the diversity,’’
Emanuel said. “You’re going to bring literally the whole world together for Olympic games, sports games, and competition. Chicago’s a great competitive city — has always been that. It has a great amount of diversity and it would be great for Chicago also for not only its diversity but for the economic opportunity that it provides in the sense of jobs and economic growth.
Different from Rio or Madrid?
“Nothing against them, but Chicago is what none of the other cities have and this is again what I think the president’s remarks will be, not saying anything negative against them, but you’re bringing all the world together... The world will feel comfortable given the diversity of Chicago all the different ethnic communities are there...’’
“It will be an affirmative argument for the United States and the city of Chicago. Nothing against anybody else. Obviously we’ll accentuate where we think the strengths of voting for Chicago is an advantage.’’
How about assuaging any concerns the IOC may have about Chicago?
“His main point is about the international community. It’s about why America is reaching out to the world.’’
What tipped the scales in convincing Obama to go
“Other leaders around the world are going to make their pitch for the four remaining cities. We didn’t want to have Chicago or in this case not have that edge, not have that kind of level playing field with other countries.’’
And for those critics of the president’s trip?
“First of all, one is they work on a number of issues in their day,’’ the chief of staff and former congressman said. “The president will work on a number of issues.
“Today he met with his economic team, on the economy, on a jobs agenda.
Two: he has been on the phone working health care with individual senators.
Third, he made a statement on Iran with what was going on there...
“I don’t remember them, I don’t remember them criticizing President Bush when he went to China to watch the games and cheer America on.,’’
Emanuel said. “Here we’re going to go to Denmark to help secure the games for here in the U.S.... They shouldn’t try to make politics of this. I think they should take some pride in the US’s win, and you know we’ll make sure they get some good seats once Chicago does host the games.’’
What if Obama fails?
“First of all that’s not how he views it... It would be good for the US, for America to host the world here in the US with a great city, given Chicago’s diversity and economic capacity to host those games and make it a world class event.’’
For the full Emanuel interview, see ABC News.com
So, what’s the line? I’ve got 5 Rush 50 Beck on Rio. Third World’s chance and all that.
LOL .. Beck says the social justice choice is Tokyo .. reparations for the Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Just seems the Chicago team must be awfully confident with his excellency and wife flying over there.
The ABC live streaming coverage previewing the presentation just started now:
The group is just entering. Odearlord .. MO’s dress is awful.
Since Chicago has no money then my guess is that there would be taxpayer money going in to fund it all. So it is just another way that Obama can bail out his crooked friends.
How do we know that he didn't, they did have two planes.
Daley says Chicago should get the games b/c of Jesse Owens?? O-kaaay.
And they'll be hearing from me AGAIN. I'm sick of those a%%holes interrupting an important show for this moron.
Crazy .. and the di-verrrrrrrrrrrrrrr-sity highlighted in the films.
Daley just cannot speak .. sounds so uneducated and uncouth and like the bull he is.
Hey Mayor .. Chicago is broke! I read they spent $100M on this bid.
This is terrible so far, IMO.
I don’t get the angle of making it “for the children.”
And don’t forget, “Chicago is safe...”
(If one stays away from railroad ties?)
Is it only the US—or does the world too—annoyingly and persistently refer to the ‘Olympic movement’? Either way, it’s the point at which I am completely off any Olympic bandwagon.
That should be a poster.
The music is annoying trying to set a mood of sorrow?
I am not inspired, i kinda feel sorry for them....is that what they are promoting...feel sorry for us kids...without this we dont have a chance...huh?
nah..RIO...RIO...RIO...at least they know its for the games...the Olympics..nuf said!! its all about a party...and rio can do it!!!
The true Chicago! Where the athletes can also get shot at..a new sport!
Absolutely everything is about our Dear Leader now, isn’t it? They just showed a video montage of Chicagoans proclaiming, “Together, we can!”
Michelle’s gonna be boohooing any second.
me, me, me, I, I, I....
Who gives a flying kazoo about her father??????????
why in the world would they choose Chicago? This video..just made me think...wow they dont need the Olympics
they need a Savior....these kids got it hard...somebody send a clue to Chicago...
Madrid or Rio...they know what its about...Celebration!!
