David Letterman reveals $2M sex affair extortion plot; CBS News producer Robert Halderman busted
New York Daily News ^ | October 1st 2009, | Richard Huff, George Rush and Samuel Goldsmith

A top CBS News producer was busted Thursday for trying to shake down David Letterman - threatening to expose the late-night funnyman's affairs with several female staffers in a movie and book.

The "Late Show" host revealed the stunning plot on last night's show in an extraordinary confession to viewers - and admitted he had indeed slept with several women who work at the show.

"I'm glad you folks are here tonight, and I'm glad you folks are in such a pleasant mood, because I have a story I'd like to tell you and the home viewers as well," he said, appearing to set up a comedy bit.

He went on to explain that a man identified by police as Robert Halderman, a 51-year-old Emmy Award-winning producer, found out that he was sleeping with several staff members.

Halderman allegedly threatened to expose the 62-year-old Letterman, who married his girlfriend, Regina Lasko, of 23 years in March, unless he forked over a staggering $2 million.

Halderman, who was being held on attempted grand larceny charges, has directed dozens of "48 Hours" documentaries, from the Winter Olympics to the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

Pretty much how Micheal Moore operates - 'cept he gets Oscars instead of jail time.

Yeah, just joke around about it. You don´t look so good when you see yourself IN THE MIRROR, now do you David Letterman.

Hopefully some other late-night TV host will rip Letterman as bad as he rips everyone else. On second thought, it won’t happen. The group that thinks Polansky is innocent wouldn’t dare poke fun at one of their own.

But is it extortion-extortion? After all, he is an Emmy award winner.

Letterman loved degrading Mrs Palin. Letterman used female staffers for sex? Was it a requirment for the job? No wonder he dumped on Mrs Palin. She has class and dignity while he is a low life scumbag chasing staffers around the desk. I guess his attack on Mrs Palin had motives we never thought of when he was unloading on her? He was angry she was not available to him.

When he got married, he was asked "What took you so long?"

He replied: "We wanted to make sure we got the prenup just right".

That's a direct quote....and one might look at the timing of the wedding in relation to this and think about the "wife testifying" thing.

I think wifie was well paid.

Good point. Letterman sure is doin’ lots of apologizing these days, and it’s centered around the shabby way he treats women.

Top Ten Reasons for Not Sleeping with Employess:

10.) Prove it.

9.) How do you keep all their birthdays straight?

8.) When your wife finds out, you’ll wish you paid the blackmail

7.) Never sleep with anyone crazier than you.

6.) Surprisingly, they were female employees.

5.) Wait till Sarah Palin hears about this.

4.) You’ll never be able to fire anyone, because everyone will know.

3.) Boy is the office Christmas party going to fun.

2.) Who do you think you are, a Democratic politician?

1.) Maybe you actually do have to be crazy to work here.

Isn’t this the classic definition of sexual harassment? And doesn’t CBS care?

I hate to watch shows on CBS because they always promo Letterman in the breaks. Otherwise I would never have to see his ugly face. I despise him.

How come the blackmailer is the only one being charged with anything?

In Jay Leno’s defense, he also had Rush Limbaugh on the other night. I think he’s being forced to host more news and politics-oriented guests because ABC and CBS ordered their prime-time stars not to do his show. They’re afraid of the competition. And he has been ripping into Roman Polanski. After a monologue joke this week on Polanski, someone in the audience booed, and Jay shot back something like, “Oh, right, he rapes a 13-year-old girl and flees the country, and I’m the bad guy.”

CBS News producer Robert Halderman busted

Nothing much will happen to that moronic clown Letterman but it sure is Damn Nice that a seeBS news producer is ruined and going to jail for a very long time.

Forgot to mention, Jay had Chris Rock on last night, and he was also tearing Polanski a new one. He said he did not get these Hollywood people defending this guy who raped a 13-year-old girl. Rock said that on the crime scale, “Rape is #2. There’s murder, then rape. We’re trying to capture Osama bin Laden because we want to MURDER him. But we’re not gonna RAPE him! That would be uncivilized!”

Yah. It's really the best way to handle it. I suppose it might be tempting to just pay it, but I think it's probably true that it rarely ends there. The blackmailer will just keep coming back for more.

The twit who might have been trying to extort money from him is an idiot. Instead of getting tried for extortion he should have just released the story to a number of outlets. Hell, he could have made more than $2 mil by hawking it to the scandal rags and he would have gotten away with it.

I was thinking that instead of trying to extort the money, he could have simply showed Letterman what he had and offer to sell his information to Letterman. A simple business transaction.

Since the entertainment industry holds that there’s nothing wrong with this, how is this much of a threat? It’s not like Letterman is a conservative or a candidate for Vice-President.
