As much fun as it is to blast Obama over this, I think the overriding factor in Rio getting it was the fact that South America never hosted the games before.
But finishing dead last, that is what makes it so funny.

There are easily dozen of other major cities in the US better suited for a summer olympics.
Chicago seemed like a long shot, even if it was in the US, which always puts on a great games.
I think Rio was the frontrunner to begin with, but Obama made it worse by showing up.
I bet Rio wasn’t saying, “Oh god we suck soo much, but an olympics will help us regain our reputations.”
I bet they went in with 110% confidence and talked up all the positives that already existed.
Good for them. Even without the Obama angle, I think south america was long overdue for a games.
