Some Chicago officials say anti-American resentment likely played a role in Chicago's Olympic bid dying in the first round Friday.
President Obama could not undo in one year the resentment against America that President Bush and others built up for years, they said.
"There must be" resentment against America, the Rev. Jesse Jackson said, near the stage where he had hoped to give a victory speech in Daley Center Plaza. "The way we [refused to sign] the Kyoto Treaty, we misled the world into Iraq. The world had a very bad taste in its mouth about us. But there was such a turnaround after last November. The world now feels better about America and about Americans. That's why I thought the president's going was the deal-maker."
State Rep. Susana Mendoza (D-Chicago) said she saw firsthand the resentment against America five years ago when she was in Rio de Janeiro. "I feel in my gut that this vote today was political and mean-spirited," she said.
"I travel a lot. ... I thought we had really turned a corner with the election of President Obama. People are so much more welcoming of Americans now. But this isn't the people of those countries. This is the leaders still living with outdated impressions of Americans."
U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) said she was approached by a consul general at the plaza as they waited for word Friday. "He said ... he was hearing that there wasn't enough time for Barack Obama to dispel the old image. ... But I don't know if that's it."
Presidential press secretary Robert Gibbs rejected the notion that the vote was influenced by the United States' standing: "No, I think you saw both at the U.N. General Assembly, you saw at the G20 last week ... I think virtually every measure of our standing in the world is different than it was just this time last year. So I don't read too much of that into this."
Maybe the IOC didn’t like listening to him read his speech from his teleprompter with the huge picture of Obama behind him — not Chicago but Obama? :)
Chicago torpedoed itself. Hard to put a spin on the local traditions such as beating people to death with 2x4’s.
I am sooo tired of these whining libs!
Note to Chicago:
Your city is riddled with corruption and crime, Clean It Up!
Did it ever dawn on them that this past week’s (black on black violence) school yard beating might have scared and disgusted some folks? I know it sickened me.
Yes, the world is just sooo victimized by the United States.
What a surprise. Blame everyone and everything, except the Big Zero.
Ya think the vicious murder of the high school honor student by ruthless street gangs may have played a part...Nahhh, It was Bush’s fault...Gimme a break!!!
Maybe Chicago just wasn’t qualified . . . or was the least qualified?
Oh yeah, that’s right . . in Obama’s and Jesse’s et al world merit doesn’t count
Maybe Rio de Janeiro presented a better plan?
Everyone seems to be assuming that the decision was a personal affront to Obama. That just tells us how much Obama's cult of personality has grown.
However, it also could have been that BO didn't show up early enough to allow enough time for the "Obama Tingle" to kick in with the IOC.
The Chicago state run media is working overtime to try and provide cover for Obama’s big time embarrassment. Sorry guys only the left wing nut jobs will fall for it.
how about Chicago pro gang and mobster town that Bush had nothing to do with
They still crying like babies??
Right on target. That is the real reason.
Wrong, Rep. Mendoza the leaders have an up to date impressions of Americans. After all, our president has spent the last 9 months traveling the world and telling everyone who would listen how terrible the USA is, that we suck as a nation and how arrogant we are. Is it any wonder that after all the derogatory commentary by him, that when Obama shows up in Copenhagen asking for the Olympics to be awarded to Chicago, that he is turned down?
Sad as it may be, I was actually happy to see America lose because in losing we won!!!
"Some Say.." is a common code for "One of our editors". It's used by Vinegar Spills like Couric all the time.
Is there anything more pathetically imbecile than a liberal??? The world, you stupid morons, doesn’t need to love us — as long as we are the best and most powerful and most prosperous nation on the face of the earth, they NEVER WILL — the world NEEDS TO RESPECT, AND YES, YES, YES, EVEN FEAR US, for there to be peace in the world.
Jesse Jackson is the Supreme Basshatof His Wing of the Donkey Party! Jackson is incapable of understanding that The OLYMPICS are a Celebration of SPORTS, and NOT ONE MORE THUGOCRACY THAT HE AND THE REST OFTHE RAT PARTY CAN EXPLOIT AND SHAKEDOWN!!! CHICAGO IS A PIT THAT NOONE WANTS TO SPEND ANY TIME IN!! NOT EVEN ON BUSINESS!! LOOK AT THE PRODUCTS OF MOBLAND!!
When all else fails....
That is NOT, and never has been, a donkey.
Well, I just wanted to avoid using the real Name, The Party of Jackasses!
I’m so tired of everyone blaming President Bush for everything. It didn’t take long for the world to see that we now have a lying, narcissistic, jackass in the White House. If anyone is at fault, it is Barack Hussein Obama mmm mmm mmm.
...probably the only one at that school...
....stupid people intend to maintain stupidity by whatever means available....
Could it be that representatives of other nations thought it unseemly for our president to use this conference as yet another occasion to put down the country that he (putatively) represents, implying that America has a bad aura lingering from its recent past (mis)behavior under the tutelage of ‘BushHitler,’ and this induced distaste in the minds of the committee delegates? Just musing.
(America's greatness). Please take a moment to view this pictorial history that neither Obama cares or even knows about about.
The chasm between American and the Obama's is very deep and becoming deeper as well as widening.
They will never understand their actions have consequences and what happened was their chickens came home to roost.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find only things evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelogus
I understand that. The tragedy was amplified by the boy’s future prospects IMO. Tried to do the right thing in cesspool. Not a lot I can say.
ENOUGH ALREADY OF BLAMING BUSH FOR EVERYTHING.
This is Osama/Hussein/Obamas baby. There's enough to blame President Bush for, especially when it comes to not halting spending , or going after the illegals... but enough of the whining from this current outfit. What a great job their “pride and joy” did, as he ran around the world telling one and all how mean spirited, selfish, greedy and just how much America was lacking in compassion...etc.....and then what a switch to hear him at the Olympic session singing the praises of America...how shallow, how ARROGANT....does he think everyone in the world are a bunch of idiots...obviously he regards we Americans as such.... One thing the press neglected to cover when they were boohooing about this.....close to half the people in Chicago didn't want the Olympics,....knew they couldn't possibly afford it.
Avoid political correctness like the plague. It's just Stalinist thought control.
And exactly how much $$$ are the US taxpayers out to get Führer 0bama over there to read his teleprompter?
Thank you muchly for showing me the weakness of my ways. I will correct in the future!..:-)
Whew! World record time in blaming Bush.
W was president when Chicago made the list of 4 finalists. Why didn’t anti-American sentiment prevent them from making the list of finalists?
Could it be that people just don't like "The Ego's" attitude? This self centered ass is astounding.
I here to tell Freepers, the comment section for this Sun times article looks like it was written by Freepers! The Polls are not reflecting the amount of disgust in this country for BO & his party of lefty’s!
The “Blame Bush” mantra is getting old. Jan 20 was a long time ago. We have hope and change in the oval office now. These are his problems.
“State Rep. Susana Mendoza (D-Chicago) said she saw firsthand the resentment against America five years ago when she was in Rio de Janeiro. “I feel in my gut that this vote today was political and mean-spirited,” she said.”
Well, Oh, susana, wait until your mailbox fills up with the resentment that Americans have for a vile cryto-Nazi, racist freak like you. Your day is ending. When we start up the American-style Nuremburg trials, I’m sure we can find a life sentence without parole for you. BTW, we’re seizing everything you own as the proceeds of a criminal enterprise. Have a nice day.
I didn’t think Chicago had a chance because of the number of Olympics in the US and the fact that none had been hosted in South America.
The Obama’s made it personal about them in their speeches. There were comments about his use of a teleprompter made by some IOC members. His speech was tacky and using a teleprompter for such a short speech was wrong. The other point is that the whole delegation of the Obama’s and the City of Chicago were convinced that Obama would seal the deal so if you look at it from that aspect he didn’t seal the deal.
That’s why other President’s would never lobby for one city in the US but allow the IOC to make their choice. Would say they were much smarter then this tribe in the WH.
Gosh, I'd love to see somebody ask Jesse, "Rev'rund Jackson, how does it feel to know that somebody else became the first black president?" That'd make a great YouTube clip...
I believe you are right.
Imagine if the IOC had awarded the Olympics to the U.S. The event would have been trumpeted as yet more miracle performed by the Anointed One. Seeing how the Obamas behaved, I am beginning to think they believe their own hype, which is dangerous for a politician.
I agree with you! Can you imagine the hype of the media if Chicago had won?
Was talking to my son on the phone from Chicago (he is in college there) when it was on the radio but he couldn’t tell if Chicago had lost in the first round because they kept talking around it until the one announcer finally gave the names of the three cities surviving. I felt like I won the lottery when Chicago got knocked out first.
You know better than to use Common Sense when describing the actions of Liberals, don’t you? /S
