Warning: Mayor’s Mumbonics may cause Ted-ache
By Howie Carr | Sunday, October 4, 2009 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Columnists

I think I know what it feels like to be Ted Williams’ head.

Just listening to Mumbles Menino during a debate and then trying to transcribe his comments - you hear the same grunts and sentence fragments again and again, as you attempt to make sense where there is no sense, merely sound and fury, as it were, signifying . . . Four More Years!

How would you describe such a thankless task, Mumbles?

“This is a tough job taking, uh, trying, uh, make everyone have a real job.”

But like so many other jobs in the United States, this chore is ending. Oh sure, the mayor will still have ’em rolling in the aisles on cable-access TV for another four years. But as far as debates go, Mumbles now has exactly one left in his extinguished - I mean distinguished - career. That assumes that he doesn’t seek a sixth term at age 70 in 2013, a pretty safe bet at this point.

So the affair at Channel 5 Thursday night against the weak Flats Flaherty was Mumbles’ penultimate - to use one of the many words he doesn’t know the meaning of - debate. History was in the air, or at least a headache.

Back to Hizzoner’s take on the economy:

“I think part of the bi-part, uh, part of our economic . . .”

Thanks Mayor, your time is up. We have to keep moving along here. Next, let’s discuss your opponent’s main base of support - Local 718, the firefighters union.

“This union wa- just wants - I have a fiduciary responsibility to the taxpayers of Boston. I’m not willin’ to give more-a 14 percent, especially now because of what the economy has happened.”

Do not despair, however. Despite what the economy has happened, Mumbles is on the case.

“We have already workin’ on that.”

Some of what Mumbles said in Needham I cannot repeat here. Not because there was anything R-rated about it, but because not even I, a renowned scholar in the dialect known as Mumbonics (if I do say so myself), could decipher it.

But feel free to try translating his words yourself. Just go to bostonherald.com and listen to Mumbles’ soundcuts from Thursday night. Good luck!

Let us move on to the city’s most pressing issue - rampant crime, despite Mumbles’ blather about Boston being a safer city. Here’s how Mumbles sees it:

“In the neighborhoods where the crime is the most crime, it isn’t the police commissioner doesn’t come down by - they meet together fi - one of the problems and how we can solve those problems.”

By the way, Mayor, how do you and your top aide Michael Flaherty - I mean, Michael Kineavy - spend most of your time?

“We’re uh, it’s about the neighborhoods. We’re out in the neighborhoods all the time, uh . . .”

What about the charge that certain - oh, what’s the word I’m looking for here, it’s right on the tip of my tongue - neighborhoods, that’s it, that certain neighborhoods get better services than other, uh, neighborhoods?

“My a-ministration doesn’t look at the - we deliver services to every neighborhood.”

Enough - I can’t go on. I have this dull throbbing in my left temple. Hey, Ted Williams’ head, is there any room on that tuna fish can for one more?

Monday show ping. Oonnh!Oonnh! “Topdadd”’s revenge...

http://bostonherald.com/news/regional/view/20091005david_scondras_sues_over_arrest/srvc=news&position=also

David Scondras sues over arrest

>>Former Boston City Councilor David Scondras is suing the Lawrence police department, alleging he was severely beaten by cops and denied medical care after his 2006 arrest for seeking a tryst with a 15-year-old boy he met online.

>>“We’ll teach you to come to Lawrence,” his federal lawsuit contends one of the cops, who failed to immediately identify himself, yelled before his arrest in a darkened Lawrence school parking lot on Oct. 9, 2006.

>>“Fearing for his safety and that he was about to be the subject of a potential ‘gay bashing,’ (Scondras) turned to try and run away,” the suit maintains, adding that Scondras was then violently tossed to the ground and struck in the head, breaking a tooth.

>>Lawrence Police Sgt. Ryan Shafer then allegedly shoved his gun into the Scondras’ head and, calling him a gay slur, threatened to kill him if he moved, according to the suit, filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Boston.

>>Lawrence Police Chief John Romero did not return a message yesterday. Lawrence Mayor Michael Sullivan defended his police department, describing it as “totally well-run and open.” Scondras, 63, Boston’s first openly gay councilor who lost his seat in 1993 after making an obscenity-laced call to a 911 dispatcher, names Sgt. Shafer and officers Eric Cerullo and John Fornesi as among the Lawrence cops who hit and kicked him during his arrest.

more at link. The “15 yr old” was actually 20...and, what radio show used to play that famous 9/11 call (actually multiple calls)? Yup.

A comment from the Universal Hub page about this story

>>Last week he leaflets Cambridge’s Area 4 with a BBQ invite that includes his name, address, phone number, and signature. Then tells http://www.townonline.com/cambridge that he has no idea how a candidates name got on the leaflet—it must have been a staffer. Three years ago he shows up at the the Lawrence hospital with
a bottle of vodka, marijuana, and a tube of lubricant. He’s been chatting with what he thinks is a fifteen year old online. He pleads guilty to the felony of enticing a child under sixteen. And immediately claims victim
status. My leaflets ruining a woman’s candidacy? Not me, must have been my staff. A fifteen year old boy, who knows me as “Topdadd”? Must be the Lawrence police! Vodka and lubricant, doesn’t
everyone go to Lawrence with that? I hope the judge who sentenced him to probation rather than
jail time is feeling really good about this now.

Last-Call Anthony Galluccio’s record tipsy-turvy
By Howie Carr | Wednesday, October 7, 2009 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Columnists

If Ted Kennedy is now known as “the Last Lion of the Senate,” then how should we refer to state Sen. Anthony Galluccio of Cambridge?

How about “the Last-Call Lion of the Senate”?

Sen. Galluccio, it’s not too late to enter the special election to fill the Lion’s shoes. And based on your history of driving escapades, who better to replace the Lion than the Last-Call Lion?

If only Last Call had had a blonde in the car Sunday afternoon, he’d be the front-runner for next spring’s Profiles in Courage Award.

For the record, Tony Galluccio has in fact passed at least one bar in his life - the Massachusetts Bar. What made Milwaukee famous has made a loser out of him.

The good news is, Last Call has been able to beat even more bad-ice-cube raps than the former Mr. Rachel Kaprielian. The only way Last Call could have gotten any more brooms would be if his first name were “Judge.” Galluccio has even gotten a gubernatorial pardon for an OUI, from ex-Gov. Bill Weld, another Cambridge pol who well knew that drinkin’ doubles don’t make a party.

Galluccio’s latest misadventure occurred at around 5:40 Sunday afternoon in Cambridge. That’s always a dangerous time to be out on the roads around here, at least if the Patriots play an early game, which they did Sunday.

According to the police report, Galluccio rear-ended a car with three passengers at the intersection of Garden and Linnean streets. Galluccio immediately sped off like a bat out of hell - I wonder why. The police are baffled, especially since one of the passengers in the other car was injured. Aren’t Democrats supposed to be compassionate?

Instead, Galluccio went on the lam. He vanished, until Monday afternoon. It was the first time a Massachusetts solon had his picture on a milk carton since Gulliver O’Leary of Melrose fled the jurisdiction ahead of an embezzling indictment. Like Galluccio, Gulliver would take a drink under extreme social pressure.

I called the Last-Call Lion yesterday at the State House, but he never got back to me. Too bad, I wanted to ask him if he remembered the late Sen. Denis McKenna of Somerville.

As was said of Brendan Behan, Denis had a thirst so great it would cast a shadow. Nobody could ever figure out how he kept getting loaded because they never saw any bottles in the trash can in his office. Then Denis died and they moved the file cabinets and found hundreds of empty pony bottles.

Don’t worry, though. This won’t happen again - at least not at 5:40 next Sunday. The Patriots don’t kick off until 4:15.

btw for those wondering about Howie’s column in the Herald
I think the “empty space” in it was actually part of an ad underneath for coffee or something..it was supposed to represent the steam coming off a cup of coffee or something

ah good! I sent an email to Howie about the “empty space” as did another listener and Howie read my email on the air. Yes, I was wondering what was going on as I read the Herald today but then I saw the ad and put it together. I did take one advertising course at Salem State in the 80s and we learned about “the hidden arrow”—things are placed so your eyes are guided to the name of the product, etc. People think, what’s with the empty space? and perhaps will look down to see the ad.

Special Thu column ping (Howie is going to Fla. for the next few days)

Have a good sentence, Arthur Gianelli
By Howie Carr | Thursday, October 8, 2009 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Columnists

Now that gangster Arthur Gianelli is off the board for the next 271 months or so, I’d like to leave him with two words:

Dale Carnegie.

Poor Arthur, the brother-in-law of Zip Connolly, the crooked FBI agent now doing life in Florida for a gangland hit. If only Gianelli had tried even once to Win Friends and Influence People, he might have had a better chance of beating the racketeering rap the feds just took him down on.

Look on the bright side, though, Arthur. You’re 51. You won’t be much over 70 when you finish your bit.

Arthur had all sorts of businesses going. In other words, he had customers. But Arthur never heard that the customer is always right. Here he is, on a 2003 state police bug, describing the president of some place called the Union Club:

“He’s one of these guys Jack that thinks he’s the (bleeping) president of the United States instead of that (bleepin’) (bleep-)hole club . . . You’re talking to a (bleeping) janitor, you know.”

Next, we come to Arthur Gianelli’s conversation in February 2004 with his girlfriend, one Daniele Mazzei. He wants her to stop gossiping about his rackets because, he says, “I have no friends. OK? (Bleep) ’em all.”

Mazzei: “I have no friends either. You’re the only person that I ever had as a friend.”

Gianelli: “OK. OK.”

Mazzei: “I don’t have anybody. I have you and I have my aunt and that’s about it.”

Gianelli: “All right. All right.”

Mazzei: “And my daughter. And I still feel that way. I still feel like -”

Gianelli: “ALL RIGHT!”

Don’t you just love pillow talk? Next he brings up another gangster Mazzei once knew, who used to have his old girlfriends strangled by a guy named Bulger.

Gianelli: “I told you about that (bleepin’) Stevie Flemmi from day one. Do you understand that you were gonna go into the (bleepin’) ground?”

Mazzei: “I’m lucky I’m not dead.”

Gianelli: “I think you get high and you get (bleeped) up and your mind gets fogged.”

Mazzei: “I don’t even smoke pot anymore, you understand?”

Gianelli: “Well, you got enough pills in your pocketbook I guess so, I mean -”

Mazzei: “What? I got enough pills in my pocketbook?”

Gianelli: “Yeah, what do you think, I don’t hear all these stories? You think I’m that (bleepin’) stupid?”

Mazzei: “I have prescriptions for every single thing that I have and you know exactly what I have.”

Goodbye Arthur Gianelli. See you in 2031, give or take a year. But something tells me there are some things about the next 271 months that he’s not going to miss, and one of them is named Daniele Mazzei.

Stray Katz Strut: WRKO.com says that Jeff Katz is on for Howie today.

WEEI made a deal with ESPN that will put that network on 850 overnights and weekends starting 11/2 and some major league baseball playoff games not involving the Sox, via ESPN,
may air on 850 (as well as the Sox themselves via Sox network). I don’t know if some baseball playoffs may get shifted to WRKO but be aware that due to a conflict with the
Sox, Celts game on Fri night (7:25 pm) gets shifted to WRKO.
WRKO also has a Sunday afternoon Celtics game.

I know Howie’s been looking for a moonbat theme song but how about an song about Obama? Stevie Wonder everybody:

We are amazed but not amused
By all the things you say that you’ll do
Though much concerned but not involved
With decisions that are made by you

But we are sick and tired of hearing your song
Telling how you are gonna change right from wrong
‘Cause if you really want to hear our views
“You haven’t done nothing”!

It’s not too cool to be ridiculed
But you brought this upon yourself
The world is tired of pacifiers
We want the truth and nothing else

And we are sick and tired of hearing your song
Telling how you are gonna change right from wrong
‘Cause if you really want to hear our views
“You haven’t done nothing”!

We would not care to wake up to the nightmare
That’s becoming real life
But when mislead who knows a person’s mind
Can turn as cold as ice un hum

Why do you keep on making us hear your song
Telling us how you are changing right from wrong
‘Cause if you really want to hear our views
“You haven’t done nothing”!

Tom FelonMan update:

Tom Finneran’s lawyer wants him ‘treated differently’
By Laurel J. Sweet | Friday, October 9, 2009 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Local Politics

Radio talkmaster Thomas Finneran’s attorney told the Supreme Judicial Court yesterday his client “ought to be treated differently” from other lawyers convicted of felonies who sought to avoid disbarment as punishment.

Arnold Rosenfeld said the lies Finneran told in 2003 testifying in a voters rights case while speaker of the house did not rise to “evil motive.”

With Finneran, 59, silently observing after stepping out early from his morning show at WRKO-AM (680), the SJC took under advisement the remarks of Rosenfeld and the opposing argument of assistant Massachusetts Bar counsel Nancy Kaufman.

Justice Francis X. Spina noted it is the job of the state’s highest court to judge Finneran’s conduct as an attorney, but when he disgraced himself by lying, “He did nothing as a lawyer.”

Kaufman disagreed, saying, “When a lawyer is convicted of committing a crime, that does carry special weight. It is this court that has established that principle.”

Finneran pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice in 2007 for lying about his role in a 2001 House redistricting plan that the Black Political Task Force charged “whitened” his Mattapan district.

Rosenfeld, who is pleading for a term suspension of the law license, said Finneran “was proud of the fact that he represented a majority minority district, and that led to his anger, resentment and agitation.

“Does that make it OK? No,” he said. “But it’s a factor to be taken into consideration.”
