David Scondras sues over arrest
>>Former Boston City Councilor David Scondras is suing the Lawrence police department, alleging he was severely beaten by cops and denied medical care after his 2006 arrest for seeking a tryst with a 15-year-old boy he met online.
>>“We’ll teach you to come to Lawrence,” his federal lawsuit contends one of the cops, who failed to immediately identify himself, yelled before his arrest in a darkened Lawrence school parking lot on Oct. 9, 2006.
>>“Fearing for his safety and that he was about to be the subject of a potential ‘gay bashing,’ (Scondras) turned to try and run away,” the suit maintains, adding that Scondras was then violently tossed to the ground and struck in the head, breaking a tooth.
>>Lawrence Police Sgt. Ryan Shafer then allegedly shoved his gun into the Scondras’ head and, calling him a gay slur, threatened to kill him if he moved, according to the suit, filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Boston.
>>Lawrence Police Chief John Romero did not return a message yesterday. Lawrence Mayor Michael Sullivan defended his police department, describing it as “totally well-run and open.” Scondras, 63, Boston’s first openly gay councilor who lost his seat in 1993 after making an obscenity-laced call to a 911 dispatcher, names Sgt. Shafer and officers Eric Cerullo and John Fornesi as among the Lawrence cops who hit and kicked him during his arrest.
