Obama wins popularity contests, not much else: A president -- and a nation -- gets smaller
NY Post ^ | October 4, 2009 | JAMES KIRCHICK

President Obama is following the advice of that great philosopher Woody Allen, who once said that “eighty percent of success is showing up.” In health care legislation, foreign relations and, now, the Olympics, Obama believes his very presence is enough to bend the world to his whim.

But even Allen allowed for 20% of something else. I’m guessing good ideas and effort.

The decision by the International Olympic Committee must have particularly stung. On behalf of his hometown of Chicago, which had invested $50 million in its bid, Obama traveled halfway around the world to swoon IOC officials in Copenhagen.

"That the president’s personal popularity and persuasive capabilities will work wonders in solving the world’s problems is a conceit fundamental to this administration’s strategic calculus. Yet the Olympics debacle is just the latest casualty of the president’s hubris."

I’m confused by this article.

If they are saying Obama is popular here, then he is not. This is a constant myth that seems to be spread throughout the media. He ranks as one of the lowest popular president at this time in his administration.

If they are saying Obama is popular overseas, then yes, there is probably true to that. They finally found a president who’s a push-over and sucker to every dictator around.

Woody Allen, who once said that “eighty percent of success is showing up.”

Zero would have done a better job if he had spent 80% of his time preparing.

“eighty percent of success is showing up.”

Woody is wrong. In the world of big-government giveaways 100% of success is just showing up, (unless you're in prison, in which case they will just mail your check to you.)

I’m curious. Did any other nation’s leader travel to Copenhagen to offer a sales pitch other than the US?

Well, they still call Michelle elegant and fashionable. In fairness to the media, they would say the same thing about Helen Thomas or Maxine Waters if they were first “Lady.”

I think the concept was that although Hussein still does OK on the “personal approval” polls—still hovering around 50%—he can’t get his agenda accomplished anymore. Obamacare is polling in the 30’s. for example.

Obama is like the winner of the Miss America contest who doesn’t fulfill her duties which come with the title but instead is constantly on TV...”I WON... I WON...I’m beautiful and... I WON”

If Obama gets in front of a Teleprompter and nobody is around to hear him, Would anyone care?

Many things in the decision were blamed on no other than George W Bush. Do you think constant blame of someone else had anythin to do with the decision?

BTTT

“The Copenhagen debacle came on the heels of the groveling spectacle that was Obama’s speech to the United Nations General Assembly.

Before the world’s largest collection of mass murderers and tyrants, Obama continued the apology tour he commenced after assuming office, repeating his Cairo mantra that “no world order that elevates one nation or group of people over another will succeed,” among other contrite platitudes. In the rough-and-tumble of foreign affairs, as in life, people don’t respect those who don’t respect themselves, and the world has responded resoundingly to our post-national president’s periodic penitence.

Obama’s efforts — mostly intentional — are to make the US look small, unthreatening, humble. That may make us more popular, but the IOC’s rejection of Obama’s personal appeals was yet another indication that there are far more significant metrics of global influence than being liked. I would rather the United States be respected than liked.”

I know Madrid and Rio did. Not sure about Tokyo.

But, the whole point of nominating cities is to keep “National” politics out of the Olympics. Both Carter (1980 boycott) and Obama ignored the time honored tradition to the detriment of the USA. Shame on Obama for showing tremendous poor judgment.
