47% will pay no federal income tax(CNN/Money article)

Posted on 10/04/2009 4:30:28 PM PDT by mtrott

Most people think they pay too much to Uncle Sam, but for some people it simply is not true.

In 2009, roughly 47% of households, or 71 million, will not owe any federal income tax, according to estimates by the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center.

Some in that group will even get additional money from the government because they qualify for refundable tax breaks.

The ranks of those whose major federal tax burdens net out at zero -- or less -- is on the rise. The center's original 2009 estimate was 38%. That was before enactment in February of the $787 billion economic recovery package, which included a host of new or expanded tax breaks.

Yes, that is a nice gig, if you can get it. No income tax liability, and soon you get your health insurance covered by the same taxpayers!

47% will pay no federal income tax

10% of that group will be named either Cabinet members or Czars.

Is this fair? The’RATS are always whining about fairness. Is this fair? Everyone should pay their fair share. That 53% of freeloaders need to get with the program and demand that they be allowed to pay federal income taxes just like the “patriotic” Americans. Paying taxes is their right!

Like I’ve said in various threads, I don’t see any other way to get these politicians’ attention than a massive tax revolt. They don’t care a bit about the 53% paying the taxes. They only care about maintaining the votes of the 47%, so they can perpetuate themselves in power.

The solution I see solving the problem is putting these politicians on a crash diet via abolition of the federal income tax, and moving to a flat tax or national sales tax.

What’s the saying again? When there are more people riding in the cart that pulling the cart...the cart stops moving.

I for one have been ‘going John Galt’, spending very little on non-essentials and doing my damndest to spend it online or in New Hampshire where they have no sales tax. Discount and bargain shopping are my mantra...save money and enjoy the challenge while you’re at it.

And since work has slowed way down for me, I think I will be one of those contributing to the “unexpectedly low tax receipt” stories we will be reading lots about in months to come.

It is deducted from the paycheck (assuming they’re not an illegal being paid under the table), but then they get it all back. The more babies they pop out, the bigger the “refund”.

“I think this is about refunds. Everyone over the poverty mark pays something.”

I dunno, is the earned income tax credit at the poverty line or above it? I was thinking above, but not sure.

This statistic does not surprise me though. I was thinking the other day about my extended family. My parents are retired, father drawing SS, I got one sister on and off various programs, a brother who barely scrapes by but not on gov handouts as far as I know, another brother and myself who do pretty well. In the end though, the two of us do not pay enough taxes to cover what the gov is dishing out to other family members. I can see why the gov and our country are in trouble.

Who pays Federal Income Tax?
For FY2007:
Top 5% paid 60.63% of the total.
Middle 45% paid 36.48% of the total.
Bottom 50% paid 2.89% of the total.

This is FEDERAL INCOME TAX ONLY!

Which taxes? Feral, State, Local, School?

I won't pay any Feral taxes for 2009, because I didn't gross enough. Does that mean I shouldn't get to vote? In local elections? Or just Feral elections?

I've got skin in the game, by being subject to the powers of the various gooberments.

It doesn’t have to reach 51%, because you also have bluebloods with trust funds who don’t care how high the income tax goes (Kennedys, Kerrys, etc), spoiled college kids who’ve never lived in the real world and use Daddy’s money to insulate them from bad decisions, and various other champagne socialists.

Trust me, I would have loved to pay a few million dollars in taxes at a 10% rate(dreaming again) for FY09. I would have eaten a lot fewer beans.

But to be told that my vote should be void because I pay no federal taxes this year grates on me, as a conservative.

I believe in maintaining as low a tax profile as legally possible, and the supreme court agrees. For purported 'conservatives' to love taxation so much that they use it as a touchstone of the franchise, is beyond me.

Now, taking money from government, or benefit from government, I can see that as a cut-point. There is a clear conflict of interest when people that get money from the government are allowed to vote.
