Chrysler to Suspend Jeep Production

DETROIT -- Chrysler Group LLC will suspend production of its popular Jeep Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited vehicles due to a shortage in parts from an unidentified supplier.

Chrysler will idle its Toledo Supplier Park facility in Ohio for one week starting Monday, the company said Friday without disclosing more details. The Wrangler has been one of Chrysler's best-performing vehicles in terms of sales for the year.

This is the second time Chrysler has changed its production schedule because of a parts issue. The auto maker also delayed adding a second shift to an Illinois plant by more than a month citing "continued stresses" on its parts suppliers.

Friday's announcement underscores previous reports that tension is growing between Chrysler and its suppliers. In addition to Chrysler's problem with shortages, some of the smaller parts makers are hesitating to commit to new vehicle projects, according to people familiar with the matter.

Suppliers are probably worried about getting paid. Good Year now pays in 70-90 days.

Well, when you are 120+ days with your suppliers and they put you on COD it makes it kind of tough to build cars.

Are they saying that the government can’t run GM and Chrysler? Shame on them.....now they’ll get a stern letter from the White House cause they’re making Obama look bad.

I have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4x4 and love it too. I had been waiting for the new 2010 or 2011 model. Not anymore. I'll never buy Chrysler. I'm looking at the new 2010 Toyota 4Runners.

I want a Wrangler to park next to our Cherokee but you cannot get any kind of a deal on a Wrangler.
Chrysler sells all they can make.

It has become very difficult to sell to any of the Big Three. I have sold coal to Chrysler and Ford. Ford offered to take my offer but locked me to a three year deal with a lower price in the second and third year. Chrysler wanted to same but never insisted on it.

I work in supply chain management. You are always walking a tightrope between management insistence on lean inventory and unexpected surges in demand which lead to unexpected surges in production. In the private sector, you reduce your risk of shortages by various methods such as alternative suppliers, asking existing suppliers to hold inventory or, as a last resort, even warehousing it yourself and constantly explaining to management why you are a drag on the bottom line.

Since Chrysler is now a government run business, they don't need to use any of these techniques because their job security is no longer based on performance but on political connections.

If it’s an automotive quote on my desk the terms are now 50/25/25. Passed up on a huge job for GM on a set of molds for the Volt, the customer balked at our terms and wanted us to carry the tooling burden completely. They didn’t want to put their money on the line, but wanted us to have faith GM would come through with all that money in a decent amount of time while we built them with our capital.

Nope, those days are long, long gone.

Suppliers must not be able to ramp up production. They don’t trust the economy to pick up and hire people.

Also, don’t trust if they will get paid.

Actually, Daimler shrugged.
Or at least is putting the squeeze on what’s left of Chrysler.
Almost all Chrysler products use some Daimler-sourced components, even my beloved Jeep.

Mine’s older, a 1996, but I have yet to drive anything better on snow than my quadra-trac. I plan to keep putting in better parts as time goes by and keep it for the long haul. I just finished completely refurbing the suspension, along with a 4 inch lift, and am contemplationg new paint.

I am thirty miles from this plant, it is what keeps Toledo going..home of Marcy Kaptur. I don’t feel at all sorry for the union folks, they have brought this on themselves.
Also I believe I saw that Toledo is one of the US poorest cities, run by the Dems also.

I've wanted a 4runner since college but couldn't afford one. Almost got the Urban Edition last year but I ended up buying my Jeep after a short lease.

Saw the new design... meh. Looks like a cross between the new Highlander (which has an awful design) and the FJ.

I just bought my 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara on EBAY! It only had 13,000 miles and was like brand new. It was a scary thing to do but I investigated the seller before bidding. Took a road trip with my 83 year old Mom and husband to pick it up in Roswell, New Mexico. Fun adventure for us.

My husband has a 2001 Wrangler. It’s a Jeep thing.

I love the updated Wranglers! The subtle design changes made all the difference in the world. Not a fan of the 4 door model though. Too much of a Hummer rip off.

Ug-ly, especially where the front fender meets the front bumper. Well, that’s my opinion, anyway, but there may be those who like it. Personally, I find most of the Japanese makers have really lost the thread when it comes to styling lately, whether it be cars, SUVs, or whatever. Look at the new Acuras - blech!

Overall, I like it! The grill is a bit awkward compared to previous designs and the lines in this one, but I could live with it. Looks like it took some inspiration from the BMW X5- another design fav of mine.

I still remember what happened to some of the workers from Wisconsin when AMC closed a plant and moved production to Toledo. AMC promised some jobs in Toledo to some of the more senior displaced workers from Wisconsin. The union thugs in Toledo literally drove them out of town using physical violence.

After his bailout on Saturn, not sure about him. If not an independent buyer, I’d think Honda might step up. They have a very limited SUV/Off Road offering, and their quality would bring instant improvement to the line.

I remember getting our first lot of parts from our first Eastern European supplier venture. Forget tolerances - these didn't even LOOK like our parts. We seriously wondered if they had sent us some other customer's order.

Settled down eventually, but it was a painful 6 or so months.

Sad to see. I've owned two Cherokees. Terrific cars for that sort of need, and I'd probably still own one had my own needs not changed.

One of the keys to the "just in time" model of inventory control is that the payments can't follow the 90-day credit model or your suppliers end up carrying the company, and that's a back-breaker. Of course, you can always find new suppliers if you're the government...until you can't. Yes, this is a very Atlas Shrugged sort of moment. BTT.

Longer supply lines = higher transportation costs, longer lead times, more inventory in the pipeline, less flexibility...

It's an inefficient, non-productive PITA, even if they get their quality problems settled down.
