WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Marek Edelman, the last surviving leader of WWII Warsaw Ghetto uprising, died Friday in Warsaw at the age of 90.
Paula Sawicka told The Associated Press that Edelman died at her family's home at 2 p.m. EDT (1800GMT) of old age.
"He died at home, among friends, among his close people," Sawicka said.

I’m involved with many WWII veterans, and it kills a piece of me as well, every time...Like the best and most decent part of us is leaving.
And it fills me with an anger as well - as what they fought and bled for is being eroded and deliberately ripped apart.
Ya’ll know the rest, brother. I’ll save the vitriol for a later time. I’m sure we’ll get PLENTY of opportunity to vent it.

I too read Mila 18 when I was in high school, and like you, the book made a lasting impression on me. I would actually like to reread it now. Time to head for Amazon.com, books.

I can't understand why so many people in the West, esp. in America know only about a Jewish uprising in Warsaw Ghetto, or, at best, confuse it with Warsaw Rising '44.
With due respect to Polish Jews, their uprising, although of TREMENDOUS MORAL MEANING, was small and insignificant from the military viewpoint because it broke out on April 19,1943, after most of 300,000 Warsaw Jews had already been shipped to German death camps. Ghetto Uprising'43 was limited only to a small restricted area in downtown Warsaw and according to different sources was carried out by 1,000 - 1,500 Jewish underground fighters.
On the other hand, Warsaw Uprising 44 covered the entire area of the left-bank Warsaw and was performed by 50,000 strong Polish underground army, called Home Army. As a result of this, 97% of left-bank Warsaw was utterly destroyed, about 18,000 Home Army soldiers and more than 200,000 civilians were killed.
See the short documentary on Warsaw Rising 1944 by CNN. I recommend it to you, although I hate to hear when Americans say "Nazis did this, Nazis did that" because we Poles fought against German Hitlerite invaders, not mythical Nazis.

While Poland was trampled by millions of German invaders, only several thousands of them belonged to NSDAP, German Nazi party. Warsaw trolleys had special parts called "Nur fur Deutsche" (Only for Germans). I live for a long time and I swear by God I have never heard of any trolley compartments named "Nur fur Nazis", or so.
We, Poles, we were murdered because we were Polish, not because we weren't Nazis!!! Lots of Polish prewar far-right activists were murdered by Germans as well. Despite they were Nazis, they were killed too. So, Nazis killed Nazis?! WHAT INCONSISTENCY! The truth is that Germans murdered Poles regardless of Poles' political views and they murdered 6 million citizens of Poland, incl. 3 million Jews with Polish prewar citizenship, one fifth of the entire population.
